Chapter 52: Exploring the jungle

Rilith, Velara, and Romina followed Yenissa and Shennong as they walked through the dense forest. The towering trees stretched high into the sky, their thick canopy allowing only a few rays of sunlight to pierce through. Strange plants lined their path, glowing faintly under the dim light. The air smelled fresh, with a hint of wildflowers and damp earth.

"Ah, it feels so good to get out of that stuffy main room and explore this place!" Rilith said, stretching her arms above her head. Just like always she was wearing the bare minimum, which was the standard for the succubus like them.

"Right? It’s a totally different vibe from sitting around and watching walls all day," Velara agreed, grinning.

Romina sighed. "You two do realize this isn’t a leisure trip, right? We’re supposed to take notes and pick up anything interesting we find."

She looked rather embarrassed to see these succubi wearing only their underwear and bras, which left little to the imagination, while she had her body fully covered, knowing that the forest was not a place where she should expose her skin.

"Yeah, yeah," Rilith waved her off, "but can’t we enjoy it a little?"

Yenissa, walking a few steps ahead, suddenly turned his head at Shennong. "By the way, can you put living things in your inventory? Like, say, an animal?"

Shennong shook his head. "No. Anything that breathes and has life cannot be stored in an inventory. You can gather flora, but fauna is a problem."

"That makes sense... but it would be cool if you could just store a whole pack of wolves in your inventory for later." Velara chuckled.

"Well, I would like that too...who knows, maybe I will be able to put living things in my inventory in future. It sure will be a game-changer, to be honest.

They continued walking, stopping occasionally to examine the plants around them. Shennong diligently stored several unique plants in his inventory, labeling them mentally after scanning them and noting every single effect he found and their names in the system, thanks to Yenissa.

"Shining Blossom," he muttered. "Absorbs ambient mana and glows brighter in darkness. It would be perfect for atmospheric lighting in our Moonlight Forest floor. Definitely adding this one."

A few steps ahead, he knelt beside a patch of low-growing vines with crimson thorns. He reached out but quickly retracted his hand as a tiny arc of electricity sparked from its surface.

"Crimson Fang Vines. Conducts static energy and discharges on contact. Could work as a natural deterrent in hostile areas, but it might not fit the aesthetic we want. I’ll hold onto it, but we might need to modify it first."

Yenissa raised an eyebrow. "Modify how?"

Shennong smirked. "We might need to change the color. I’m aiming for a dark green aesthetic, so a bright red like this wouldn’t match the dungeon floor."

Velara plucked a golden, feathery plant and held it up. "What about this one?"

Shennong glanced at it and nodded. "Sunshade Fern. Absorbs sunlight and releases warmth at night. It won’t be much use underground unless we have a light source that mimics the sun. Probably not the best fit."

"Oh! Look at this one!" Rilith pointed to a tree with bright blue leaves that shimmered like metal.

"I’m calling it Shiny blue Shiny flowers!" Velara declared.

Romina raised an eyebrow. "Why would you say shiny twice and that name is too childish!"

"Fine, how about... Blue Blue Shiny Blue Flower?"

Before Romina could respond, Rilith curiously poked at a nearby purple flower with bulbous petals.

The flower exploded in a puff of golden spores.

"Ack! What the—?!" Rilith coughed, stumbling back.

A moment later, Velara and Romina were engulfed, too.

Velara froze. "Oh no."

Romina blinked. "Oh no what—?"

Then, all three of them started scratching furiously.

"AHHH, IT BURNS!—Wait, no—it tickles!—WAIT, NO, IT BURNS AND TICKLES!" Velara shrieked, flailing on the ground like a fish out of water.

"RILITH, WHY WOULD YOU TOUCH IT?!" Romina screeched, trying to claw her way out of the invisible itch-hell.

"It looked soft! I didn’t know it would explode!" Rilith whined, scratching her arms like a maniac.

"You have the survival instincts of a newborn fawn in a dragon’s den!" Romina snapped.

Velara flopped onto her back. "This is it. This is how I go. Death by flower. Tell my story."

"We are NOT dying! We just need—" Romina slapped at her arm, "—some water or something!"

Shennong sighed and walked over, pulling a bottle from his inventory. He poured a glowing green liquid on each of them, and almost instantly, the itching subsided.

"Couldn’t you guys go one minute without getting into trouble?" Yenissa asked with a judging look. "Don’t touch anything. Just let Shennong examine them."

"It wasn’t my fault! It was Rilith!" Velara pointed accusingly.

"Hey! I was just curious!" Rilith huffed.

They continued their exploration when they stumbled upon a writhing mass of vines, eerily resembling tentacles.

Rilith squinted at them. "Okay, is it just me, or do these look—"

Before she could finish, the vines lunged forward, wrapping around her legs and yanking her into the air.

"Ahh! I KNEW IT!" she shrieked. "I HATE THIS FOREST!"

Velara and Romina barely had time to react before the vines coiled around their waists and arms, lifting them high off the ground.

"Wait—NOPE! NOPE! NOPE!" Velara yelped as a vine wiggled suspiciously close to her face.

"I SWEAR TO THE GODS, IF ONE OF THESE CRAWL INTO MY CLOTHES, I’M GOING TO BURN THIS FOREST DOWN!" Romina shouted, kicking wildly.

Shennong sighed, rubbing his temples. "Why is it always you three?"

"WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!" Velara yelled as a vine snaked around her wrist, making her flail even harder.

Yenissa crossed her arms. "Just let them dangle for a bit. Maybe they’ll learn a lesson."

"EEK! PLEASE HELP ME!" Romina begged. "I CAN FEEL IT SQUIRMING!"

Meanwhile, the vines weren’t just grabbing—they were exploring, poking, wriggling, and moving like they had intentions. One even brushed against Rilith’s cheek, making her shudder.

"Oh no, no no no, I am NOT into this! This is NOT my preference! I haven’t even tasted Shennong’s cock yet." she screamed, twisting away.

"Somebody kill these things before they get ideas!" Velara hollered.

Shennong, still looking completely done with this, pulled out his knife. With a few precise slashes, the vines snapped, and the three of them dropped like sacks of potatoes.

He barely managed to catch them before they hit the ground face-first.

Yenissa dusted off her hands and pointed at the trio. "Congratulations. You three are officially banned from touching anything or exploring anything. Just follow us."

Rilith groaned, sprawled on the ground. "I feel violated."

Romina sat up and looked traumatised by what had just happened. "I don’t trust forests anymore. I can’t be a bride anymore."

Velara shuddered. "No one is allowed to talk about this. Ever."

As Shennong continued gathering plants with Romina, Rilith and Velara silently following him, sticking very close to him, he noticed small creatures that looked like a squirrel but had the features of a cat darting through the trees. "There should be at least ten of these in our Moonlight Forest."

"Is that enough? Our floor is pretty big, I think we can have more than ten." Yenissa asked.

"Enough for now, but we need to slowly increase their numbers. We need male and female pairs to improve reproduction rather than always exchanging animals from this forest. There is always a risk of animals dying when they are exchanged to an unknown environment."

Just then, a strange noise caught their attention. Yenissa inhaled deeply, her expression darkening. She looked around rather cautiously until, she noticed something rather interesting happening in a certain direction.

"There’s a pack of wolves nearby," she murmured. "They’re feeding on something... but this isn’t human blood, nor is it wild animal blood."

Shennong’s gaze sharpened. "Which direction?"

Yenissa pointed ahead toward the river, and Shennong pulled out a net made of spider silk with weighted ends used to capture wild animals. It was something he crafted just for this exploration, knowing they would need it.

"That’s perfect. We can capture them without even bothering to find them." Shennong saw this as an opportunity rather than a threat, but Yenissa wasn’t so pleased with his plan, as fighting while holding back always carried a significant risk.

"Isn’t it dangerous?" Yenissa asked. "We could easily kill them, but capturing them alive is another thing entirely."

Shennong nodded. "I have muzzles made of iron with strong locks. Once attached, they won’t even be able to open their mouths, and I have strong chains to bind them. Also, I made simple Iron cages to temporarily put them in temporarily. Everything is perfectly ready, and we just have to capture them. Don’t worry about it. I have a plan."

She wondered where his confidence came from, until he pulled out a blowpipe, grinning as he explained it contained blow darts with a medicine to put the wolves to sleep.

Yenissa smirked, knowing as always that Shennong had everything planned out. "Then let’s do this. You and Romina should stand back. Rilith, Velara—let’s go deal with these wolves and whatever they’re fighting, and use Shennong’s tools."
