Chapter 76: A Tyrant
Chapter 76: A Tyrant
"Because you are going to kill him, Damon!" there! She said it, with a calm look on her face. There was no doubt in her eyes that surprised Damon.
Even he was hesitating yet she whispered as if it was set in the stone.
"If you kill his grace, you will be announced as a tyrant. But if he is proven guilty and punished by the royal family, no one would blame you for his death. But they request you to take his position. At that time, you would be their savior." his eyes widened. And for the first time, his shock was evident in his eyes.
"What are you talking about?" he could not understand her at all. "Do you think my father would make such mistakes? Even if he did, would he let you know about them? Or is it your trick? Did your sister ask you to convince me to make a fool out of me? Olivia, death is the only punishment for crossing me!" Instead of feigning ignorance, he warned her with cold eyes, giving up on all her pretence.
Olivia took a deep breath.
"The marquis would be soon convinced that his grace is not fit to handle the position anymore. But he would not take the blame. You will suffer, Damon. But what if I offer you help?"
"What help?" For someone who had never met Marquis, Olivia was oddly calm and well versed with his thoughts. Damon knew that his uncle would never take the blame for him. But he did not understand how Olivia knew that.
"I will tell you your grace’s sins. But it is upto you how you find their proof." Damon’s eyes narrowed.
"It smells like a trap." Olvia bit her lips. She knew he would not trust her. That was the only reason she was stalling for time.
"What reason do I have? If I convince the second prince to marry me, I will have enough power to support my sister and Leo even if you kill the duke. Why would I take so much risk to convince you otherwise?" looking at her propbing eyes, Damon felt at loss of words.
These were the questions he could not find the answer to! Why was she going to such lengths for him!
Looking at his lost face, Olivia’s eyes softened. He was still a young man yet he had suffered so much that he could not trust anyone.
"Do you remember the distribution of grains to drought-stricken areas last year?" Damon turns to look at her again, "your father had stolen twenty percent of the amount funded for buying grains and brought a few properties from it under your name.
It is not his love as a father, but if anyone ever investigated the matter, you could be accused. If you look for the papers and prove that the properties were brought by your father instead and at the time of drought, many would be doubtful of the duke.
They will investigate the rest themselves since many believe that the grains were not enough. It had cost many lives and the royal family had suffered humiliation. They would not be easy on his grace if they got proof against him."
"...." silence filled the carriage. Damon kept staring at her, making her uneasy.
"If you still doubt me..."
"No, I do not doubt you." he cut her off with a curt and cold reply. "But I do not understand your reasons."
"You do not need to understand them. I will leave the manor to you. When the time comes, you are going to support Leo and Abi. Abi would marry a man she loved and Leo would live his life as your cherished younger brother." Damon frowned. Nothing made sense.
"For now, refuse the marquis. Tell him you are not prepared to kill your own kin. Go and support your father, join his office. You will need access to his office to find proof!" her voice was persistent as if her life and death was dependent on his decision.
He looked away again, feeling heavy. This simple conversation had left his mind in a mess.
Could a woman be so selfless for a stranger?
"My lord, I am exhausted. And after the incident, my body burns. If you do not mind, can I rest now?" Damon blinked. Though she only had minor scratches on her body, she must have been shocked.
"Of course, I apologize for my lack of awareness." He took out a plush and a blanket for her. Olivia thanked and settled herself well in the seat. Damon watched as she closed her eyes. He kept watching her.
He still remembers when Oriana was nothing but a maid following his mother. Oriana used to bring Olivia with her. Olivia had forgotten but they had played together in the garden in the past.
Until she was scolded by maids to call him by his name. Since that day she stopped coming to the manor. He wanted to tell her he did not mind if she called him by his name.
That memory felt so distant. When he met her again, she had entered the palace as the sister of the new duchess. They all think he was too young to understand. But he knew! Oriana had killed his mother to get her position. And Olivia... was her ally.
They were sisters! How could they not share their crimes? He had steeled his heart and decided to never trust Olivia again. But now.. Looking at her earnest eyes, he did not know what to feel.
"If you keep staring at me so intently, Damon. Forget about sleeping, it would be hard for me to breathe at all." Olvia did not open her eyes but spoke with a deep regretful sigh. Damon finally looked away out of the window. Four knights were still following the carriage on horses.
That accident was not a coincidence. Someone had planned to get rid of Olivia. But who would be against her?
"Have you shared your strange planse with someone else too?"
