Chapter 55: The Lord Had Returned!
Chapter 55: The Lord Had Returned!
The sound of hooves could be heard from a distance, followed by the cheers of the crowd. Oriana watched with cold eyes. Her hands clenched into a fist under her long sleeves.
How did this happen? She had made sure that Damon did not have funds, support, resources and good knights to fight this battle. This battle was a lost cause from the start.
She had personally chosen the weakest knights, refused the staff of the estate to help him. She even made sure that they did not have medical help. Yet..! yet! She wanted to curse and scream hard but the smile on her face did not falter even for a second.
Dressed in a bright new red gown embellished with rubies, Oriana waited with her whole staff.
When Damon dismounted from his horse, she smiled sweetly and hugged him.
"I knew that you would be successful, my son. I am proud of you. You have once again proven that you are the pride of our dukedom. I will personally organize a grand ball to celebrate your victory." her voice had joy and warmth as if she could not praise him enough.
Damon had long noticed the presence of the queen’s messenger and how he stared at them warily. But Damon was in a good mood. She did not want to ruin it by arguing with his step mother. His eyes scanned the crowd. He frowned when he did not see a familiar face there.
"I am tired for now. We can discuss the details later, mother." he bowed his head and went straight to his room. The staff took a step back while giving their lord the way.
The man still reeked of blood and death. Oriana sighed as she watched him leaving.
"It is my mistake that I could not teach him enough manners. But look, he had become such a fine knight! He had single handedly killed so many barbarians. I am so proud." Her words only brought a frown on the messenger’s face.
He was informed that lord Damon had returned. As the eldest son and heir of the duke Aykyord, the man was destined to sit as the head of the administration of the empire.
But the man standing in front of him did not meet the image of administration. He only looked like a bloodthirsty knight. His cold actions had left the duchess trembling.
"Anyways, let’s prepare for the ball. The party should be organized in three days. Start writing the invitation letters and..." as the duchess walked in, followed by her staff. The man disappeared into the darkness as if he was never there in the first place.
Oriana smirked as she looked at the empty space.
"But your grace, count Ruhanthore is going to celebrate the birth of his first son after three days. If we invite guests on the same day." The butler was at a loss for words but Oriana just laughed.
"You are forgetting that the royal family is going to announce the marriage of the crown prince. Then do you want to organise the party then? Or do you have the ability to organize the party tomorrow?" questioned by Oriana, the butler was left with no choice but to bow his head.
"I have thought about everything. So you do not need to worry about the date. It will be better that you start preparing for the event instead." The butler knew well what the lady wanted. He did not have any choice but to bow his head and leave.
When Olivia and the kids returned, they noticed the staff was busy cleaning the manor. The gardener was cutting the beautiful roses carefully while the aides were busy writing letters.
Olivia instinctively looked at the training grounds but they were still empty.
"Could it be.. Or am I thinking way too much? It is still early." In her past life, she had never met Damon again. By the time he had returned, she had already left to live in the royal palace as the next consort of the second prince, Edward.
She shook her head and walked in. She helped Abi in taking her bath and changing her clothes. Leo already ran away saying it is inappropriate for girls to give baths to a man. It had only made Olivia laugh for a long time.
When she walked out after dressing up Abi, her dress was wet and full of mess.
"Now princess, you should sleep early or I will bring the theology of Astroy for you to read." looking at the still energetic face of Abi, Olivia felt helpless.
They have spent the whole day playing and running around. Yet the kids were not exhausted even a bit.
"Not at all, I am going to sleep." Abi hopped into her bed and covered her face with the blanket after that her aunt would really bring a book for her to read.
"But.." before Olivia could complain, Abi started snoring loudly. Olivia shook her head with a helpless smile. She watched as Abi acted and then left the room.
She wanted to go and talk to Oriana. It was a must that she spent time with kids. But Olivia once again stopped when she saw the new curtains and other decorations.
"Is there a celebration?" She stopped the maid and asked in a curious voice only for the maid to sigh. "Did... the lord return?" Olivia spoke in a trembling voice but the maid did not notice the change and nodded with a wry smile.
"Yes, her highness had decided to throw a ball in three days. There is so much to do. The whole staff is going crazy about it. I will see you later, my lady." looking at the maid’s retreating figure, her heart thumped loudly in her chest. Her eyes brimming with shock and hope.
Last time when Damon had returned, he was half dead. He was the only one returned and got a lot of criticism for his incompetence. His eyes were blank and dead. Since then the ruination of the duchy had started. But the past had changed already.
"So the party is for his success!"
