Chapter 49: A Small Gift!
"And then I stabbed him with my sword. The man was writhing in pain but I knew it was all an act to distract me and then..." Edward nodded seriously as if he was hearing about the gruesome competition she had faced to become a knight. But his eyes were looking around.
He was sure Olivia had come this way. He has confirmed it with the maid already. The woman knew that he was going to follow her. This better be worth it.
"And that is how I won, your highness. Till the end, my heart was racing. My hands trembled so hard when I let go of my sword. Isn’t it incredible."
"It is. For sure, it is." Edward nodded with a sincere look. "You are a miracle my lady. The first knight of the empire. I am in awe just thinking about it." Isabella flushed despite her years of training as a knight.
She felt her heart pounding as if she was having a duel. The grip of her hands increased instinctively and Edward groaned. It took all of him to not push her away and endure her grip.
"I am truly amazed, your highness. I thought nobles would never accept this change. But you are so understanding, so kind. So... different from all of them." Edward noticed that the woman was touched. She looked beyond happy and if he proposed, she would accept him then and there without him sending her expensive gifts or taking her to operas.
That woman would cling to him and would be loyal to him. Yet, he wanted to do nothing but push her away and leave. How could she be so dense? He had not even acted this well, yet she did not understand his intentions even a bit. She would be a foolish partner. And he was bound to fail if he chose her.
She could be manipulated too easily. He would never be able to share his secrets with her.
"You are giving me too much credit, my lady. Ah! We have come this far. Are you not thirsty after speaking so much?" Edward looked at her apologetically. "Look at me, I should have brought two glasses of wine with me." Isabella shook her head.
She only looked around and realized they had come too far from the party. How many rows of roses had they crossed already. The moon was shining brightly. For some reason, she felt shy.
"That.." looking at her rosy cheeks, his face darkened. He was barely controlling himself now.
"Would you wait here for me, my lady. I will soon return." Isabella felt reluctant. But she could only nod and sit at the seat he had pointed at.
Edward assured her that he would soon return before leaving.
Edward had just turned left and crossed the row when he heard a woman laughing softly. His heart raced for some reason. How long had it been that he felt something except irritation and anger.
With a calm smile on his face, he looked into her direction. Edward was stunned.
Olivia had taken off her heels. She had pulled her dress up to her knees. Her bare and fair ankles made him gulp. He had seen a naked woman in his bed. But their body had never enticed him before yet he was feeling heat rising just by watching her fair legs.
"It is bad to leave your companion alone in this dark garden, your highness. I was waiting for your confession of love." she pouted. Her lips look so seductive and her animated eyes seem to draw him closer. "You disappointed me and lady Isabella, your highness."
That teasing voice. That glitter in her eyes and the movement of her lips. How could a girl change in just a few days? He did not seem to recognize her at all, yet he smiled at her teasing.
"Oh dear! And here I thought that you were waiting for me too. I was worried that you would suffer heartbreak if I accepted her proposal, my lady."He walked closer to her and she only leaned on her bench. Her actions are casual and relaxed. She shifted to her right to leave a space for him.
"Hmm, so are you breaking her heart by choosing me, your highness?" her voice did not have a hint of thrill but a strange boredom and disappointment.
"It depends on what benefit you could bring me, my lady. It would be a lie that I was not tempted by your words earlier." Olivia laughed unrestrained. He had never seen a girl laughing without covering her lips.
The rudeness felt enticing for a moment and he wondered why he had never seen the quivering of lips before.
"You already knew my sister would support you. But if you chose me, I can bring information that not even the guild could provide. I will pave a way of your success, your highness. From the dirty secrets of lady Amber to the spies high highness Elio set in your knights. Your every wish would be my command, your highness." he frowned. When she had enticed him, he had believed the girl had some substance.
But now, he felt disappointed following her here like a fool. She could see his distrust and irritation but did not mind it at all. Who would believe in his right mind that an orphan daughter of a baron could reveal the secrets of the duke and royal palace.
But she had lived here enough in her past life. She was not worried that he would not choose her again. But she was worried that she would gain nothing from that deal.
"I know it is hard to trust me, your highness. That is why I have prepared this small gift to show my sincerity. If only it will benefit you, should you come to find me again in my sister’s palace." Olivia passed him a red handkerchief. His face darkened when he noticed it was the handkerchief placed on every table in the palace as decoration.
"What is the meaning of this?"
