Chapter 42: Smile To Win

"Hahahaha! There are three of them." Damon could not believe his eyes as held two more parchments.

The maid took a step back looking at the crazy expression on his face while Gaston’s eyes narrowed.

The vegetables and meat were scattered on the ground now. Food Damon had treated previously was nothing in front of those two parchments now.

"Do you really believe it, Sire. it is impossible to predict the future." Gaston could not help but warn the man.

For him, Damon had always been cold, calculating and a leader worth following. So, he could not understand his actions. How could Damon trust a parchment he had found randomly.

"Yet, it had warned about the first attacks with such precision." Damon spat back with his eyes narrowed.

He finally stood up. His expressions turned grim again.

"Would you be kind enough to clean the mess?" the maid nodded at once and picked up the carrots from the ground.

Damon walked away and Gaston followed him closely. They did not return to his room. But the place attacked in the morning.

Damon opened the first map he had found at some point and followed it. He stopped at one point. The place was covered in blood.

"That was where their first troop had hidden itself. No?" Gaston pursued his lips. His hands clenched into a tight fist when Damon pointed at the parchment.

There was no way to deny it. But an oracle? A parchment telling the future was too good to believe.

"It could just be a coincidence." he retorted and surprisingly Damon nodded.

"I agree. A professional could have predicted this place. But it is not necessary that he would be right next time too." a look of confusion passed Gaston’s face as he heard Damon’s explanation.

"Then why in the name of god were you laughing like a madman?" The man frowned at once but Damon only stared at the path.

"Because the maid should believe that I trust these maps completely." Damon started walking again, opening the second map.

For two hours they walked in silence as Gaston finally understood. Damon never trusts anyone. Even his eyes and ears. He wondered if this man trusted him, his aide ever?

"This is the place stated in the second map. What do you think about it?" Gaston frowned. They have walked away from the estate. It was in front of a barren land that did not hold much value.

"Why would they attack this place instead?" Gaston shook his head. Coincidences can not happen often. It was a miracle, it had happened once already.

"Because it’s close to their cemetery." Gaston’s eyes widened.

"How do you know that?" Damon did not reply. He stared at the distance. The smoke was still lingering in the air. The hymns must have sung since the voice of mourning could still be heard.

Gaston followed his gaze and noticed movements not far away. His fist tightened.

"They want to take revenge for death. It might be.."

"We will cover the whole area. But we will pay special attention to this place. Gaston, I want you to be here for next one week." The man stood straighter. His eyes sparkled with joy.

"Could it be that you can only trust me, sire? Do not worry, I will place my life at stake for your trust." Damon felt bemused looking at his sincera face and sighed.

"No, I want you to be here personally because you know the secret signals. If anything happens, you would be quicker to report to me than others. And your absence would not impact the rest of the troops so we do not need to change the formation too. It would not create chaos." Damon shrugged leaving Gaston dumbfounded.

He stared at Damon as if he was really looking at Demon.

"Even if that was the case.." Gaston shook his head. Complaints are for weak. "I will not disappoint you, sire." he saluted with force, earning a sincere nod from Damon.

Damon patted Gaston’s shoulder.

"You can leave now, soldier. We must be prepared for the morning." Gaston nodded. He was exhausted beyond belief. He had carried twenty bodies on his shoulders so far after the attack. And then accompanied Damon the whole night.

"Are you not coming, sire?" he frowned when he walked two steps but Damon did not move from his place.

Damon finally turned to look at him. Gaston stiffened looking at the dark eyes of Damon. Sometimes, he really looked like he had come from hell.

"I will be there before you realize. Leave!" Gaston wanted to refute. But facing his cold and dominating aura. He did not have the guts to.

He bowed his head and left. Damon closed his eyes. An image flashed in front of him.

"I want to survive, my lord Just like you." he could not get rid of those words. How many times had they echoed in his ears already! The girl had changed completely from his past memories.

"Olivia! What are you hiding from me?"

—------------

"Olivia! That smile is awful. As if you are controlling the powder room." Oriana slapped Olivia’s back with her fan. "Using fans is such a fine art. How could you not be good at it! Focus." She held her fan properly and smiled from behind.

Her eyes were full of seduction. Even as a woman, Olivia felt the desire to hold Oriana. There was no doubt, her sister was sensuous. Even by standing, she looked so seductive and charming that it could win many hearts. While she..

"All you need is confidence." Oriana sighed. She could read Olivia’s face. "And stop running around maids. You are not one of them. I heard that you helped a stable boy in cleaning?" looking at the disdain on her sister’s face, Olivia bit her lips. She could not share that the stable boy let her use the horse so that she could visit the city at night.

"Olivia.. You are going to be a royal. Everyone will bow in front of you. Remember this!"
