Chapter 41: She Was Illiterate
Chapter 41: She Was Illiterate
"I have not set a foot out of the manor, my lord. How can I draw the map? I am not even literate. You can ask anyone." she finally sat on the ground and caught her breath.
She stared at Damon as if he was a fool. The bafflement in her eyes did not escape him but he ignored it. He already knew that the maid was not responsible. Yet, he had a silver hope that she would know who was responsible. That someone would take the blame and he could interrogate the person.
Perhaps it would spare their lives from the impending doom.
"Then how could it reach you?" the woman flinched at the dripping venom in his voice. His intense gaze full of dominance left her terrified.
He sighed looking at her petrified gaze.
"I do not mean harm. But it could save many lives. Tell me, whatever you know about it." the girl wrapped her arms around her body. As if it would help her in collecting her strength.
"I do not know. It is my loyalty that I gave it to you. But i think... Lady Olivia had put it there."
"....." his eyes flickered. The girl who had never set a foot in the old manor. The girl who had not even seen the map of this estate had drawn this map?
The map which explained the area in detail and marked with a red point where the attack happened.
"Ha! Hahaha! You have lost your mind." he shook his head with force when the maid bit her lips.
"My lord, the ration was personally checked and packed by the lady. It was inside the ration. There is no other explanation." Damon stiffened at the explanation but he still did not believe it.
It was just not possible. It could be a trick of the staff to fool him.
"Forget it, you may leave. And keep an eye on the staff. This is the last chance I am giving you. I will reward you well if you prove your worth. If not.." the maid bowed her head and left the room.
Damon ran a hand in his hair and sighed. He stared at the map again as if it would speak and explain to him who had drawn in it.
Every stroke was full of perfection. Every point was so precise as if someone had drawn it when the attack was happening. But the ink was dry. And looking at the amount of dirt and smell of potatoes it had accumulated, there was no way it was drawn tonight.
But if someone had packed it with rations. His eyes widened as a wild idea had struck him.
"There could be more!" As foolish and bizarre as it may sound, there is no other explanation for this map.
If there could be one, there could be more. The maids stared at Damon in confusion. He had been here just an hour ago. Yet he was there again?
And his wounds were still dripping blood. Noticing the strange gazes of staff, Damon paused. He could not let others know about it.
He searched the room but could not find that maid.
"I need someone proficient with herbs." The maids exchanged glances in confusion. But none of them came forward.
It was a relief. Since he was worried someone would mix poison in his herbs.
"Great! Who is handling the rations then?" his gloomy voice left goosebumps on their skin.
"The staff brought by the lord is personally handling the rations. They did not take food we provide or share their food with us." Bernard, the housekeeper of the manor spoke up.
He nodded at the staff and they all returned to their duties. The man faced Damon alone.
"We are treated as strangers in our own home, my lord. This place is nothing less than a home for us. Your mother... cough. Previous duchess had cherished the staff here." he explained only to get a sneer in return.
The man was stunned to see Damon had no reaction when his mother was mentioned.
"Yet, when she died. No one was there to mourn for her. Forget it, talking about dead is a waste of time." listening to his cold voice that was devoid of any emotions, the man felt a strange chill in his bones.
"I am dripping blood because I put my life in danger to save all of your lives. My wounds still need to be treated. But there is not a single maid who offers help. Yet you are giving me a lecture on how I do not treat them well. I have never seen such a loyal staff." the housekeeper flinched. Even the staff standing behind him bowed their heads.
"My lord.." a maid came forward hesitating, "if you could trust me, i know how to stitch the wounds and about healing and related herbs too." looking at the sincere yet scared eyes of the maid, he nodded lightly. He spared only a single glance to the rations and then returned to his chambers with the maid.
The maid did not speak a word. She lightly followed him and treated his wounds. Using the warm water, she cleaned them and bandaged them for him.
"My lord, the barbarians will not stop until they take revenge. If the duke would give concession.." the maid paused when he met her eyes and lowered her head hurriedly.
"You think it could be controlled by us? Do not forget your place." the maid trembled and hurriedly bandaged his wounds. Once again, he was left alone in the room. He hardly cared if she had mixed poison in the herbs. Even if he died after solving this mystery, he did not care.
Someone could predict the attacks and guide them to prepare for it! Just the possibility of it made him thrilled!
His heart was still racing just thinking about the possibilities. He could hardly wait for midnight so that he could return and check.
"Could it really be you, Olivia?"
