Chapter 268: Refused To Pay!
As Olivia stepped out of the stone house, Damon followed closely behind. Liliana trailed behind them, arms folded, clearly unimpressed by the entire exchange. No sooner had the door shut behind them than a handful of villagers rushed toward the house, concern written all over their faces.
"Village Head! Are you alright?" one of them called, knocking hastily.
Another one, a younger man with a pitchfork still in hand, shot a wary glance toward Liliana’s back. "Did they threaten you? Did they hurt you?"
Liliana scoffed, loud enough for them to hear. "Cowards. If you wanted to protect him, you would have come inside when we went in. but you only came to accuse us for the hazards later. You only want a chance to gossip or spread rumors."
"Liliana," Olivia said sharply, shooting her a glance over her shoulder. Her voice was low but firm. "They are not worth it."
"But.." she did not want to leave when they looked at her as if she was a criminal. Olivia understood her, but she knew they would not realize their mistake just with a few words. Proofs were needed to set this right.
"There is no need!" she spoke in a commanding voice. "We have other tasks to do." Liliana wanted to protect. To her, their actions were full of hypocrisy. She wanted to teach them a lesson but.. "Fine! I will follow the command of my leader." The villagers gasped in shock as they looked at Olivia in a new light.
Olivia knew that liliana had done it intentionally. But she did not say a word. She only nodded and continued walking.
They made their way down the path that twisted through the battered remnants of the village.
"Do you think the families will talk to us?" Olivia asked quietly, glancing sideways at Damon.
"They will talk," Damon said, voice calm but cold. "If they truly believe that woman was guilty, they’ll have no reason to hide anything. But if there’s even a crack in their story"
"Then we’ll find it," Olivia finished for him, her voice hardening.
They approached the first house listed on the parchment. It was a modest wooden hut at the edge of the village, half-collapsed but still inhabited. Smoke curled from the chimney. Children’s voices echoed faintly within.
Olivia took a deep breath and stepped forward, raising a hand to knock.
"Wait," Liliana said suddenly. "Let me do it. They’ll lie to you, but they’ll fear me."
"No," Olivia replied gently, lowering her hand. "If we want answers, we need truth, not fear." She knocked twice again.
The door creaked open, revealing a young woman but her face looked exhausted and tired eyes. She had a cautious expression. Her gaze flicked between the three visitors before settling on Olivia.
"Yes?"
"We want to ask about your brother." Olivia said, her voice steady. "He was one of the men involved in the incident with the witch, the one who was burned."
The woman’s face paled. Her hands tightened around the edge of the door.
"I don’t talk about him," she said hoarsely. "He is dead. That part of my life is over."
"But it’s not over for the woman you burned," Liliana snapped. Olivia didn’t stop her this time. The woman flinched, noticing a witch glaring at her.
"she killed him," the woman whispered. "She murdered him and four others. We had to burn her. It was justice."
"Do you know what happened that night?" the woman frowned, looking agitated when the same question was repeated after a threat.
"My brother died that night, what else?" she glared at Liliana but she did not dare to threaten Olivia similarly. Especially when Damon was standing behind her like a knight.
"I meant, that witch burnt my brother and his friends. Everyone knows about the incident." hearing the victim tone, Liliana wanted to hurl curse, but Olivia beat her to it.
"Why was only your brother and her friends targeted? I heard that the girl was working in the inn for five months. She had never attacked anyone before. I even heard that many liked the girl for her beauty and good temperament." The girl was stunned to hear this.
In the past no one cared about the woman once they found out she was not human. Even the village chief did not ask for any details when they asked for compensation.
"You already have peace," Damon said coldly. "But someone else was buried alive for it."
Liliana stepped forward, her voice a whisper of restrained fury. "If you don’t speak, you will regret it." The fire was dancing in her palms. The girl was shocked witless as she took a step back and started screaming. But for some reason, no voice came out of her mouth.
She was shocked again and tried as she rubbed her throat but she did not feel any pain. She could not speak, that was all.
She pointed at Liliana and started cursing but her voice just did not come out.
"As long as you promise me to speak the truth, I will let you speak." The woman looked nervous. She held her dress tightly and wanted to refuse. But her kid’s voice brought her attention and a distraught expression appeared on her face.
She gulped and then nodded while lowering her head in embarrassment. Olivia snapped her fingers, shocking the girl. So it was their savior who had attacked her. She bit her lips and looked at Olivia with resentment.
"How could you force me like this?" she complained only to get a chuckle in return.
"Your brother and his friends had forced a woman to die gruesomely. Yet you find this wrong?" the woman opened her mouth only to shut it again. She did not know what she should say.
"My brother had a habit of drinking and going to brothels. That night, he was too drunk and went to one of the brothels. But my father refused to pay for him."
