Chapter 267: Find Them.
Chapter 267: Find Them.
Liliana smiled gently. "Then maybe there is still hope left. But this would not be easy."
"It never is," Olivia murmured, brushing her fingers across the grass absently. Her eyes lifted to Damon, who had remained quiet. "What are you thinking about?" she asked softly. Damon looked at her and sighed.
Damon pushed away from the tree trunk, his expression had a hint of gloominess as he thought about it. "Olivia, you are right. The incident did not look that simple. If the witches had saved the kids, why would someone still burn them? It would be better that we look into it," he said finally, his voice low but firm.
"There has to be a record or at least a name of the witch who was burned last. If someone sets her up I want to know."
Olivia looked at him with a mix of gratitude and unease. "Do you really think we can find anything after all this time?"
"If there is even a trace, we will find it." Damon straightened. "We will start with the village head. He might not tell us everything, but he will tell us enough."
Liliana hesitated. She had no trust in humans. But as she looked at Olivia, she couldn’t refuse. The bloodwitch was fated to save them. The prophecy could never be wrong. Perhaps, this would be the turning point.
"Alright, I will come with you. But remember, I still did not trust them. If they harm me.." Olivia covered Liliana’s friends and nodded.
"I will always be there for you. No matter how it started, we are still friends." Liliana shook her head. Olivia wrapped her hands around Lilliana and then dragged her toward the village. Damon walked behind them making sure there was no wild animal attacking them.
The village was still in ruins. Many families were trying to build their houses again. The village head was shifted to the part which still had a roof. Many important papers belonging to the village were kept there with him.
As they approached the village head’s modest stone house, several locals stopped to stare at them in confusion. Though they have accepted Olivia in their village. Anyone could tell that liliana was a witch. Now that two witches were going to the village’s head house followed by the strongest knight, they could not help but worry.
Damon frowned when a group of guards stopped their way and looked at Damon warily.
"What are your intentions for coming here?" they asked in a cold tone. Damon smiled as if he heard a joke while liliana scowled at them.
"I have told you it is not a good idea." she frowned with the intention to burn them. She might have compassion for the weaks, but these were just thugs that love to pick on the weak and bow their heads in front of strong people.
"We need to discuss something with the village head." Olivia explained calmly as she stood in between them.
They hesitated for a second before refusing.
"We do not find it safe, please return." liliana scoffed and Damon took a step forward but Olivia stopped them again and stood in between.
"Remember this, I can kill witches with ease. What are you if I want to kill you? Do you even have the ability to stop me?" The villagers were stunned by her cold and haughty reply.
"We are witches as you already know. And Damon is a strong war knight. Do you think your little abilities would be able to stop us if we wanted to harm anyone in the village?" The man opened his mouth and closed it, unable to come up with any reply.
He looked at them stunned speechless but was also embarrassed by their question.
"Forget it! Let us pass through. We have something to discuss inside. Once it’s done, we will leave instantly." The guard was still uneasy. But he knew, if they insisted, he had no way to stop them.
"Find! But if any harm comes to the village head..." lianaa raised a hand and the man took several steps face in fear. His forehead was covered in sweat.
"Too much bragging for a scared person like you." she clicked her tongue. After a long time, she felt better.
Olivia shook her head and dragged Lilliansa with her. Damon narrowed his eyes and glared at the guard as they walked inside.
As they walked inside, people could not help but stare again. some quickly looked away. Others watched with narrowed eyes. Olivia held her head high, her steps calm but deliberate.
The village head was an aging man named Bertram. he opened the door with evident hesitation.
"We just want to talk," Damon said smoothly, though there was no warmth in his tone. "It would be better for the village that you support us. We are here to learn about the last witch burning."
Bertram’s eyes flicked between the three of them, lingering warily on Liliana. "It’s a painful memory for me, us. We have been the victim here, But we do not want to think about it anymore since Olivia saved our lives. As long as the witches would not attack us again, we would not pursue the matter." he muttered. "So it would be best if the past was left buried."
"No memory should be buried if it hides the truth," Olivia said in a determined voice, "You burned someone. I want to know why."
He shook his head. "We only burnt harmful witches. You are talking like wwe have committed a crime when it was her mistake. She killed five men. That’s all there is to it."
"Then give us their names," Damon said coldly. "If you are so sure."
Bertram hesitated. The lines on his face deepened. Finally, he grunted and stepped inside, returning moments later with a folded scrap of parchment. "These were the names of their families. Since the men were gone, they have suffered for a long time and we have paid them from the collected taxes. All of them are still alive. You can ask if you don’t believe me."
"We will," Olivia said, snatching the parchment with quiet fury.
