Chapter 262: Stop The War!
One hour earlier.
"Are you feeling better?" Damon touched her cheeks softly when Olivia looked at him with guilty eyes.
She held his hand and this time, there was a small cut on her finger. He looked at her reluctantly.
"Damon, if you keep feeding me blood but would not take mine in return, you would be weak soon and then I would not be able to feed on you. And you might get sick too." Damien wanted to say that he could endure it. But he knew, sooner or later, he could not.
He took a deep breath. Though he was repulsed by the blood he decided to endure it and took a sip. He had sucked his own blood after the small injuries, but her blood tastes different. It was so thick and dark, almost gleaming. He wanted to throw up instantly.
Perhaps, she noticed his struggle and rubbed his back gently. He felt a strange warmth in his body and he was able to take a few sips before she pulled her finger away.
"How are you feeling!" rejuvenated. He felt that he was a few years younger for a second.
"What about you?" she nodded back and leaned on him. How long had it been when she finally stirred. He looked at her with warm eyes.
"Let’s go out for a walk. We need some fresh air." Damon thought about it for a second and nodded. He helped her in dressing up.
She watched him amused as he served her. She stared at his reflection in the mirror as he made her hair. Her eyes were welling up but she did not cry. If only, they could always stay this happy.
"Why are you looking at me like this?" he asked, teasing. But she did not hide her face shyly like before she beamed at him instead.
"I am watching how much my husband loves me." he froze for a second and then laughed.
"Once this ends, let’s get married and return to our estate." Olivia froze. And when she nodded this time, she did not stop her tears. Hre held her hands dearly as they walked out from the inn. He took the breakfast basket from the inn and held her hand as they walked out.
The morning sun was a gentle warmth on their backs as Damon and Olivia walked side by side down the village path. He looked at each other with a sweet smile on his face.
They watched as the villagers worked hard to build their home again. Whenever they passed them, the villagers stopped to smile at Olivia and bow their heads.
Damon watched it with a look of pride in his eyes.
"They did not fear the witches anymore." she whispered, making him sigh.
"They do fear the witches. But they did not see you as one anymore." Olivia paused and looked at him. He raised a brow looking at her frowning face.
"What happened?" he frowned when she paused.
"Then it is not enough." what was not enough. He wanted to ask but when he noticed the villagers looking at them confused, he did not press her and they continued to walk away.
Olivia did not walk aimlessly like before. He noticed she was following the path that would lead them to woods. His frown grew deeper but then he brushed it off thinking she was not comfortable with all the villagers staring at her.
Later, they wandered to the woods beyond the fields, where villagers never wander. These paths take them to the deep woods. They did not dare to go there.
"Why are we here?" Olivia walked ahead, lifting her skirts slightly to keep them from catching on brambles.
"I need to show you something," she said after a while, pausing near a gnarled oak. Her voice was softer now and he saw her eyes full of hesitation. "This is where the witches gather. There is a grove past the thorns, protected by an old barrier. It keeps them hidden from the world."
Damon’s expression tensed. "You want to go there?"
"I do," she turned to face him. her eyes clear with not a shred of hesitation in them. "I want to speak to them. If we keep avoiding them, they will strike from the shadows. I need to know what they want."
Damon looked past her into the thick woods. his jaw was tight instantly. "You are walking into the snake’s den, Olivia."
"I know," she replied simply, "but this time, I am not alone."
A long silence passed. Then he sighed, and nodded. his fingers brushing against her cheek "All right. But if anything feels wrong, we will leave instantly."
She smiled faintly and nodded. "Do you know where they live exactly?" Olivia sighed and shook her head. A heavy lump formed in her throat but she pushed it away."
"No, but Liliana does. She had lived with them all her life."
"...."
They found Liliana at the edge of the woods, tending to herbs in a small pouch around her waist. The young witch looked up, startled when she heard footsteps. Her face only relaxed when she saw Olivia.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, confused. "You are still weak, you should rest more."
Olivia walked closer with a look of hesitation on her face. "I do not want to wait anymore, lilliana. I want to meet them."
"You want me to take you to the coven?" she asked Olivia, glancing nervously at Damon. "That’s dangerous. They are already on edge after the fire. They would not accept you anymore."
"I know, I am not going there to be accepted." Olivia said in a steady voice. "But I need to see Meridia and strike a deal with her." She hesitated. "Please, I can not trust anyone but you."
Liliana chewed her lip, looking torn. Then, reluctantly, she nodded. "I will take you as far as the barrier. But after that, you are on your own."
