Chapter 255: Take The Burn!
Chapter 255: Take The Burn!
Olivia closed her eyes. The heat of the fire beat against her skin, but she steadied her breathing, letting Liliana’s voice guide her.
"Feel the current and the movement. the flow in your body. You don’t need to force it. Just open the door."
At first, there was only the sound of the flames. But then, a stirring. A breeze lifted the hem of Olivia’s dress, brushing her cheek, catching strands of her hair. She didn’t open her eyes, only lifted her arms and turned her palms outward.
The breeze built stronger. It spun around her, swirling faster and faster until it gathered strength. Olivia’s fingers curled inward as if gripping something invisible. Then, she pushed forward.
A sudden gust of wind surged from her outstretched hands. It roared through the clearing, slamming into the burning tree. The fire hissed and sputtered as the wind beat it down, smothering the flames one by one. Leaves from the surrounding trees rustled and spiraled around them, but the fire was dying.
In seconds, the crackling gave way to silence. Smoke curled upward from the blackened bark, the tree left charred but intact.
Olivia opened her eyes slowly, breath caught in her throat.
Liliana was staring at her in awe. "You did it."
Olivia blinked. "I didn’t even feel like I tried that hard."
"That’s what’s terrifying," Liliana said softly. "You didn’t try... and yet you did something that takes wind witches years to master."
Olivia swayed slightly, exhaustion finally catching up to her. Liliana rushed to her side, steadying her.
"You need rest. You’re drawing from deep wells of magic! your body hasn’t been trained to hold such strong magic yet."
But Olivia only smiled faintly, her eyes sparkling despite the fatigue. "One more element, then I’ll rest."
Liliana groaned, half-scolding, half-laughing. "You’re impossible."
"Maybe," Olivia said, her voice soft but steady. "Or maybe I was just meant to be more." she shrugged and prepared herself for more but Liliana’s smile faded the moment she looked at Olivia’s face.
"In the name of the witchlord!," she whispered, stepping closer. "Your face looks so pale and gaunt. I can not believe you are still standing."
Olivia blinked slowly, swaying where she stood. Sweat beaded on her brow, and the glow that had surrounded her earlier had dimmed completely. Her lips had lost their color, and the shadows beneath her eyes had deepened to bruises.
"You need to rest," Liliana said firmly, her voice turned sharp with concern. "No more magic, Olivia. Not tonight. You are returning to the inn."
But Olivia only tilted her head back and stared at the sky, where the horizon was already blushing with the earliest hues of dawn. The first birds were beginning to stir in the trees.
"It will be morning soon," she murmured, her voice almost dreamy. "I need to go back before Damon wakes up. He will notice I am gone and will be worried."
Liliana grabbed her wrist gently. "He will understand if you are late because you are practicing to save all of them."
"No," Olivia said, her gaze still fixed above. "He won’t. I promised him I would be careful. He already is sacrificing way too much. I do not want him to come with me at night and protect me while I practice. He had exhausted himself enough, as a human he had his limitations. If I return looking like this!" Her voice faltered, and she looked at Liliana, eyes wide. "I just need to make the most of what time I have."
Liliana hesitated, torn between reason and loyalty. Finally, she sighed.
"You have touched the four main elements," she said. "That is unheard of already. But there are more complex forces too. Many main elements make variations and fusions like Ice, for one. It’s more than just frozen water. Wind and water are part of nature and it is easy to summon them but to summon ice is different." She paused. "Can you make it rain and freeze the droplets in the air? Or even just conjure a dagger of ice, sharp enough to protect yourself or kill someone?"
Olivia blinked at her. "I... I don’t know. But I can try."
"No, Olivia! That is not the right moment!" Liliana tried to stop but it was too late. Olivia had already closed her eyes, drawing in what little strength she had left. Her hands trembled as she raised them in front of her, fingers curled slightly. She focused on the air around her, on the cold that still lingered in the soil, on the moisture drifting in the wind.
Her brows furrowed. For a moment, the air chilled. A silver mist curled around her delicate fingertips.Liliana held her breath when she saw the mist forming around her fingertips. Her eyes widened with shock.
Then, the mist shattered like glass, dissipating into nothing. A sharp gasp escaped Olivia’s lips and she collapsed. Her body crumpled to the ground, limp and silent.
"Olivia!" Liliana dropped to her knees beside her, heart racing. She turned her over gently, brushing her hair from her face. Olivia’s skin was cold to the touch.
"No, no, no," Liliana muttered, pressing two fingers to her throat. relief flooded her as she found a pulse. But it had become very weak.
"You fool," she whispered, brushing dirt from Olivia’s cheek. "You should have stopped..."
Tears pricked Liliana’s eyes as she gathered Olivia into her arms, cradling her as gently as she could.
"You were born to change the world," she whispered, "but you won’t live to see it if you burn yourself out like this."
The sun had begun to rise behind them, casting golden light over the charred tree, the wind-blown grass. She knew if she did not bring Olivia back to the inn, Damon would be running here soon. She knew Olivia would never want it. She had no choice but to bring her back to the inn. Liliana held her tighter.
"I will get you back before he notices," she said softly. "And you will rest, whether you like it or not."
