Chapter 246: Face her!

The crowd stared at Evelyn, stunned into silence. They looked at each other with wide eyes, disbelief sinking slowly into horror.

"You... you brought them here?" one man rasped with a voice hollow with betrayal. He looked down at the ashes in his hands, the remains of his home, his family. "You let our children die?"

"Why?" a woman cried. "Why would you do that to us? We trusted you!"

But there were still a few who did not believe Evelyn could do this. Her family had been helping the villagers recently when the witches had attacked them. She was nothing but kind.

"Had she scared you to accept it? My lady, we will protect you." came the worried voice but even they felt the look in Evelyn’s eyes was strange and eerie.

Evelyn’s gaze swept over them, her lips curling into something that might have once been a smile, but now looked jagged and wrong. She was no longer trembling, no longer hiding. Her voice was sharp and cold.

"Scared?" she repeated mockingly, a low and cold laughter escaped her lips. "You think I was scared?"

She shook her head slowly and stepped forward, brushing ash off her cloak. "No. I was realistic. Someone had to be. What did any of you have to offer me? Your whining or your pleas for protection? I do not care about your useless loyalty?" The crowd recoiled, as if her words had slapped them.

"We have trusted you!" someone shouted enough for her to laugh.

"And? Did you not have the same loyalty to Rhistel earlier? And now.. Look at you! Just one doubt and you are ready to burn him with your own hands! Who would need that kind of loyalty? You are nothing but a bunch of greedy and weak insects." they all looked at her in horror. But deep down they knew she was right.

They let go of Rhistel and Damon instantly. Their faces ashen with guilt and remorse.

"We doubted him only because you sowed the seed of discord! We would never.."

"Enough of this nonsense! Evelyn’s smile twisted further. "You were already lost. Just clinging to life like insects after a storm. I simply made a trade you would have all accepted if you would have been at my place." A murmur of rage rippled through the villagers. The hesitation from before had returned as they let go of Rhistel and decided to attack Evelyn instead.

"We will kill you!" they shouted with newly burnt fury but Evelyn did not look fearful at all. She only scoffed at them.

"You dare! The witches would return anytime I asked them to! Are you ready to face them?" she boldly looked out at a silver shimmering pendant with strange words inscribed on it. One glance and all of them knew that it was witchcraft. Now everyone was sure Evelyn had killed their family and burnt the village through witches.

The villagers stood frozen, no longer with torches or pitchforks. Just broken hearts and the understanding that one of their own had condemned them and now they could do nothing against her.

Olliva looked at their petrified and shaken faces and smiled. Her fingers snapped and Evelyn looked around as if she had just woken up from a long sleep. But this time, she remembered her nightmare.

Evelyn blinked rapidly, as though reality had just come crashing down on her. Her eyes darted from the villagers to Olivia, to Rhistel and Damon. The calm mask she’d worn cracked.

"You... You bewitched me," she hissed, her whole body trembled with rage. "You twisted my words! I never meant to say all that. It’s your fault! You did your witchcraft on me!" she shouted in a loud voice for everyone to hear but Olivia only laughed in return.

She took a single step forward toward Evelyn and touched the pendant she had held earlier.

"Oh?" she said softly. "Then what about this insignia you showed them?"

The words sliced through Evelyn’s spiraling rant like a blade and it shut her mouth at once.

"I.." she faltered. "It is just a simple pendant. You forced me to speak all that." she spoke hurriedly but the look on her face had already given her away. So she dropped the pretense. As long as she could get rid of all of them here, no one would ever know the truth. She was sure that her father would not care about more lives.

Her eyes narrowed, her mouth curling into a snarl. "Fine," she spat, venom dripping from each word. "Yes. I have called them. I called them because none of you were worth saving. And I will do it again."

She held the pendant in her hands under the horrible gazes of the villages and whispered something under her breath. Before Olivia could snatch the pendant, the air around them changed and turned cold and howling. "You’ll regret this. All of you." she laughed as she tried to run but Olivia held her tightly.

"No," Olivia whispered, but her voice carried like thunder. "You will regret underestimating me."

Evelyn smirked. "Then come and try to stop me, blood witch."

Evelyn’s summoning circle burst upward in a wave of blood-red light, and for a moment, it seemed the earth itself would split. And from there, four witches had returned wearing the dark cloaks. Their faces were hidden but their lips curled into a smile asking for blood.

"Olivia! We knew that you would come to save them." one of them smiled. Rhistel recognized the witch at once. She was the only who had attacked him earlier and burnt the village. He wanted to run toward Olivia to block her but he could not move. No matter how much he tried, he was rooted to the ground. He looked around in panic and found Damon struggling at his place too.

The villagers stood rooted too but they did not struggle as they knew they were no match to these creatures.

"Now that I am here, let all the villagers go!"
