Chapter 242: A Long Awaited Plan
Chapter 242: A Long Awaited Plan
Clondoire’s eyes glinted with the sharpness of a man who had stopped fearing consequences long ago. He took a slow step forward,
"I have been planning this for more than a decade, your grace," he confessed in a reverent voice, "It began when I met Olivia’s parents. Her mother has saved a child once in the words. He was bleeding out, torn apart by wolves. There was no chance that he would survive, But she touched him, whispered something... and he lived. She thought she was alone there and no one saw her, but I did. Since my hounds had torn the child apart." his eyes gleamed with joy just thinking about that accident.
"Then I went to the town and confirmed myself. There were so many experiences like that. Where the people who were on the verge of death came alive or became healthy suddenly. They all believed that the goddess was protecting them. But I knew gods did ot live among us, only demons do."
"It did not take me long to track her down since she was very popular and I could never forget her fiery hair and green eyes. I lived there with their guests and showed my deep care until they were moved. I have met Olivia and Oriana there but I did not go closer. I knew it was hard for that woman to trust. But her husband was easy to fool. His wealth was depleting because he did not collect much tax and spend more on the commoners than he had. When I offered help in exchange for miracle treatment, he confided that his wife could perform magic. She could save lives." the man laughed like he had gone mad.
"But when I told the woman to take lives, she refused. The nerve of her!" He smiled, but it was far from warm. "Now look where her stubbornness had taken her!"
Rhistel’s gaze darkened, but he didn’t interrupt.
"Oh lord, you do not understand power, since you have never tasted it. But you can not blame them for wanting more. You could not expect me to manage these small three villages all my life where the land is barren and the beasts attack all the time? It is only normal that I want wealth and power for myself. One must have one want! It is your family who taught me so."
The man grinned with his eyes going colder.
"Why did you not take Oriana and Olivia then. After the death of their parents, they were alone." Clondoire gritted his teeth as if someone had pressed his sore spot.
"You think I did not try!" The man lost his composure for a second. "I have tried to convince Oriana to follow me. The young girl was barely fifteen. Yet she was so shrew and cold. She refused my advances and went to the capital. I even followed her there but she did not listen to my advances. She told me that she did not want to do something wrong. That foolish girl.. She did not want to do anything wrong and yet she became the maid of the duke and soon married her.
I have let her go because I wanted her to see the reality of this harsh world. So that she would never dare to refuse me when I offer her again. But who would have thought that innocence was just a facade and she had more greed than I could fathom. I did not care about the blow and was ready to kidnap her from there but she did not show signs of magic. Even when people die in front of her, she does not save them. I paid a servant to keep an eye on her for a decade, but she never performed any magic or did a ritual. I was confused and had no choice but to wait."
"But you did not wait! You looked for the witches in the meantime." The man looked not at all surprised by Rhistel;s words, nor was there any sign of guilt. He just shrugged his shoulders.
"Why bother with swords or arrows when a single thought could silence a palace?" He spread his arms slightly, as if presenting the vision of the future he had built in his mind. "It didn’t matter how strong the crown was or how many soldiers it had. The witches... could end it all without lifting a blade."
Rhistel clenched his fists. "And so your solution was to make them your weapons?"
Clondoire chuckled bitterly. "Weapons? No. Partners. In exchange for their help, I would give them the Northern Duchy. A place of their own. Freedom, land, safety—something they’ve never had under the crown’s eye. That was the deal. And in return, they would help me rule the kingdom."
"You want to hand over a nation built with blood and sacrifice to a coven that would burn it all down the moment they changed their minds?" Rhistel snapped.
"They would not!" he announced with such conviction that Rhistel wanted to laugh over it. "They only want revenge against the person who betrayed them and want their own lands. Witches had a strange pride. But they did not hold on to greed! If they were greedy, they would have killed us a long time ago and took our lands. But they did not." he confirmed and for once Rhistel nodded.
They could take everything they wanted.
"How did you find them then?"
"They were keeping an eye on the baron family too. It was not difficult to notice their presence when I was following the baron family. They could help me but they would not until I returned their bloodwitch to them. Rhistel, even if I let go of them, they would never let go of Oriana and Olivia. And now you have left Damon and Olivia alone in the woods to save them from me. But..." the man took a step closer and whispered softly. "Have you ever thought of saving them from their impending doom?"
