Chapter 218: Come Read For Me!
"You... what?" confusion filled her and she frowned deeply.
"It is hard to believe, isn’t it. Perhaps this would help!" Olivia raised her hand and there, Oriana saw a small spark, flicker of light as if a candle was burning but she could not see the candle, the flame was coming from Olivia’s fingers.
"What in the name of god!" she whispered, voice almost broken as she took a step back horrified.
Olivia looked down, shoulders trembling, not from fear, but from the weight of truth finally spoken. "I’m a witch, Oriana. I’ve known for some time. Rhistel found out before I did. He’s been helping me secretly. I didn’t want to tell you because I myself did not know what exactly I was. I needed time, I never thought you would find out like this. But I couldn’t keep lying anymore."
Oriana took a step back. "You... blew yourself up?" she hesitated and looked at the flame again. It looked enchanting. She wanted to touch it but at the same time she was afraid of it.
Olivia let out a breath. a soft, shaky laugh laced with exhaustion. "I was trying to control the magic. The book said that the spell is used to enlighten the room but it burnt my clothes and.." olivia raised her hair. The endings looked charres as if her hair caught fire.
"I am still new to it. I didn’t even know I had it until the signs started showing. The torn dress, the dirt... it wasn’t Rhistel. It was me." Her voice softened, eyes pleading. "I’m not meeting him at night in secret to betray you. I’m doing it to protect everyone, including you."
"But why didn’t you tell me?" Oriana’s voice cracked again, this time from something deeper. "You’re my sister. You know I would have stood with you!"
"I was afraid," Olivia admitted, finally meeting her eyes. "I am Afraid you would look at me strangely. Or worse, like I was dangerous." She lowered her gaze. "But now that you’ve seen it, maybe it’s better this way. At least you know the truth."
Oriana stood in silence, her chest rising and falling as she tried to piece together everything she had just heard. The flame had disappeared but she could still feel its warmth on her fingers.
"Witches were burnt in the past. If they could produce fire, how could they be burnt?" Olivia paused, she had expected many questions but then again, Oriana’s mind worked differently and she could not blame her.
"Perhaps, every witch had a different kind of power. Or we are not immune to real fire. Or the witches had been bound by something that their powers did not work. I do not know. I am still learning everything."
After a long silence, Oriana finally moved. She walked to Olivia and placed a trembling hand on her shoulder. "Why didn’t you trust me?" she asked again, but her voice was softer now, hurt fading into worry.
"I didn’t even trust myself," Olivia whispered.
Oriana drew in a sharp breath, her hand tightening. "And Rhistel? Why is he helping you?"
"Because he is a keeper. His family had a thirst for knowledge. He believed that witches had helped his family many times and his family had protected their identities. Our mother was one. And perhaps, the powers had been inherited by me." Oriana let the words sink in and then her eyes widened.
"Then could it be that I am a witch too?" Oriana whispered looking at her own fingers with a shock, but deep inside there was anticipation too.
"You are not." Oriana whispered softly. She did not show her relief but explained, "Rhistel said he had tested you. But he did not find powers in you."
Orina’s eyes dimmed but she nodded. She wanted to ask if that was the reason Whistle had approached her, but she did not have the courage to ask now. And worse... she did not want to hear the answer.
"Oriana. You can not tell anyone about it. If others know, I could be burnt like them." Oriana sighed and softly nodded.
"I know, I understand. The words would never leave the room." she nodded hurriedly. "What else can you do?"
"..." Olivla laughed and shook her head. "For someone who has heard it for the first time, you are surely at ease. Or should I say you are thrilled."
Oriana blushed but she did not try to hide it. Magic and witches had always attracted her when she was young. She wanted to hold some power to get rid of those bad people who had tormented them as kids.
But now, it was not her wish but the truth!
"I can look into the memories, and I can summon fire. I can make medicines and.." she shrugged, "for now, i can only do this much. But i am sure i would learn."
"There is book of spells there?" Oliva was stunned but then she remembered she had told Oriana about it so she nodded and explained to Oriana everything. How she had seen glimpses of the future one day and helped Damon with it.
She did not tell Oriana that they had died once in the past and she had returned to change the present. She only told Oriana that she had started seeing strange dreams and then everything started.
Oriana listened to the whole story silently. Her heart wept for her sister. How much she had suffered. But then...
"Do you think your mother did something to hide your power when you were a child?" she could not forget how much Olivia had cried when the healer had come as if she was losing something precious.
"I do not remember, Ornaa. And there is so much I still did not know." Oriana sighed and rubbed her back.
"I am sorry I doubted you." it was hard to accept but it would be harder to hide. "Olivia... can I help you in any way? I want to be useful too."
"Then... Do you enjoy reading history?"
