Chapter 211: You May Fall

Lady Evelyn’s cheeks turned crimson as she scrambled to her feet. the embroidery of her gown slightly torn at the edge. The poise and mockery she wore just moments ago were gone.

"You! You did this!" she pointed at the sisters. "Just like your mother..." but before she spoke further, she paused and then gritted her teeth. "I will not let this go!"

But she could hear the snickers from both sides. She glared at the sisters and with her head held high, she turned away, leaving Oriana in confusion while Olivia narrowed her eyes.

Oriana stared after her, breath fogging in the chill. Her brows furrowed.

"What did she mean?" she whispered, then looked at Olivia. "How did she know our mother?"

Olivia didn’t answer. Her face was as still as ice, lips slightly parted, eyes locked in the direction Evelyn had fled. Her fingers tightened around the gloves she held.

"Olivia?" Oriana pressed again, stepping closer.

But her sister said nothing. It was not a coincidence. Olivia asked about their mother last night with a terror stricken face and now, the nobles were talking about her!? In the capital, no one had ever asked about their mother.

She was not a noble. How could nobles from the distant north know about her? She stared at her sister’s rigid face again.

"I do not know her. How could I know what she was talking about!" Olivia looked away. She always ignores meeting eyes when she lies. Oriana felt agitated.

There was something Olivia wasn’t saying and for some reason, Oriana felt left out.

Before she could ask further, a ripple of whispers moved through the gathered nobles around the salon. Several pairs of curious eyes were watching them now, some behind fluttering fans, others with smug delight. Oriana straightened herself and stepped back, her expression turned to a kind woman again as she wrapped her arms around Olivia’s arms.

"Should we go and buy some desserts for kids?" Olivia returned to her senses too. She nodded and followed Oriana to the carriage. But there was a heavy silence between them. Oriana stared at Olivia a few times but the other looked lost, or even scared.

"You can trust me, I am your sister." Olivia stared at Oriana who looked confused and angry and sighed.

"Of course I trust you." Oriana frowned deeper at the simple reply.

"Then tell me, why were you asking about mother last night?" Oriana locked her eyes, she would not let go until she had a reply.

"I started to have strange dreams. I do not remember having them in my childhood. But I saw my mother too. So I was scared and asked you. I do not know how that girl knows about mother or what she was saying, Oriana. I am just confused." Oriana bit her lips when she saw Olivia trembling with fear.

Perhaps she was thinking too much.

"Alright! How old are you? How could you be scared of some dreams?" she leaned closer and rubbed her shoulders. "They are just dreams with no meaning behind them. You must be missing mother." her voice softened. "We are new here, so we can not clash with the noble families directly. She was the daughter of the viscount Cloundre, they took care of the borders. He is an important person for Rhistel. But I will talk to him about the behavior. I am sure he would warn the viscount."

Catch me if you can!" Abi squealed, her curls bouncing as she raced past a startled guard. Her voice full of laughter paused Oriana and she looked outside. They were already entering the manor.

Abi was running around and Leo followed close behind, his muffled laughter bursting through his scarf. Their cheeks were flushed from the cold, but they glowed with a joy Oriana hadn’t seen in years.

Oriana’s breath caught in her throat. The sight of them, untouched by sorrow, radiant in their reunion with her felt surreal. As soon as the carriage stopped, she took a few hurried steps forward to play with them but then stopped hesitating.

"Leo! Abi!"

"Mama!" Both children shrieked in delight.

Abi ran into her arms first, clutching her tightly as though she might disappear again. Leo hesitated only a moment longer, then joined, hugging her around the waist.

"You came back faster today!" he grinned.

"I was missing you.," Oriana whispered in a thick voice and Olivia turned to look at her. How much had oriana changed at once.

She glanced up and saw Rhistel standing near the archway. A tall figure, composed, elegant as ever, but his face unreadable. His gloved hands were clasped behind his back. The faintest wind tugged at the edges of his cloak.

Their eyes met. She smiled instinctively. "Rhistel."

She released the children and crossed the snow toward him, her hand reaching for his arm.

But when she neared, he didn’t open his arms.

He only dipped his head slightly. "You’re back early."The warmth drained a little from her chest.

"Yes... We went to try on my wedding dress. I did not ask you before buying Olivia a dress too." she said carefully without mentioning Evelyn yet.

"You can buy anything you want. You should buy clothes for the kids too. They seem happy here." Oriana smiled again, sweetly. Yes, she was overthinking again.

"Yes, they are. All thanks to you. I can never pay this debt." she sighed but he only smiled.

"There is no debt my lady. You should be tired after a long day. You can rest for a while before the guests come." Oriana nodded and walked inside.

He waited till she was gone and then turned, walking toward Olivia, who now stood with her arms crossed beside one of the stone pillars, her gaze fixed on the horizon.

Olivia’s expression didn’t change, but she gave a brief nod in response.

"I threw a girl in the salon today." Rhistel raised a brow at that.

"You had a fight?" he frowned, "Oriana did not tell me about it." That was when she fully turned to look at him.

"She did not know. Because I did not use my hands to push the girl."
