Chapter 54: Chapter 54 I Don’t Want You!
A smile across Nicole’s face the moment she caught sight of Hailey. She just woke up from a short nap and is feeling better. Hailey was sitting on Raymond’s lap, her head was resting on his chest as she slept.
Nicole’s eyes moved from Hailey who was curled up in Raymond’s arms to Raymond whose eyes were tightly shut, his head was against the wall.
A sad smile filled her face, and a look of guilt flashed across her face as she stared at him. The guilt gnawed at her heart, knowing damn well she had hurt this caring man deeply.
Nicole blinked back her tears as she averted her gaze from the two people in the room. Her eyes went to the ceiling as she tried to steady her breathing.
Seeing how Raymond cares for Hailey, a part of her wanted to crumble but she knew she couldn’t feel this way. Hailey needed to be far away from Raymond, he wasn’t enough.
Raymond is the last thing she needs in her life at the moment or maybe, never.
"You’re awake!" Raymond’s groggy voice called out, making Nicole jolt a little before turning to face him.
"Oh yeah, yeah.." she said awkwardly. Their eyes locked for a brief moment but Raymond nonchalantly looked down at Hailey and said.
"She slept after eating lunch. You want to eat something?" He asked.
Nicole nodded stiffly. "Yeah, I’m famished." She said softly, her eyes peering at him.
Raymond hummed. "I guess I’ll keep Hailey beside you and go get you something to eat." He said in a low voice.
He tried not to be awkward during his real first conversation with Nicole. Even though she was staring at him with that burning passionate look on her face. That was something he figured she hadn’t changed...staring at him passionately as if she wanted to rip him off his clothes.
"Thank you," Nicole said. She slowly sat up straight, resting her back against the pillow that was arranged behind her.
Raymond stood up with Hailey in his arms and Hailey stirred in her sleep, her eyes fluttered open.
Raymond sighed when he saw that she was awake. Hailey said with a cranky voice. "Are we leaving, uncle?"
Raymond raised his gaze to meet Nicole’s before he reported back, looking back at Hailey. "No. Just want to get your mommy some food."
Hailey inclined her head and her eyes widened in joy. "You’re awake." She wiggled a little and Raymond took that as a cue to let her down. Hailey quickly ran towards Nicole’s bed.
Nicole smiled weakly at Hailey who came to her side. "We came earlier and you were fast asleep. Are you feeling better now?"
"Of course, baby. I am feeling much better." Nicole raised her eyes to thank Raymond. "Thank you for taking care of Hailey."
Raymond didn’t say a word, his eyes staring deeply at Nicole. Annoyed?? Yes. Regret coming? No.
He just didn’t know how to feel about his presence there. He wasn’t happy about the situation but nothing could change. But he was itching to talk to Nicole about this.
Raymond’s phone started to vibrate in his pants pocket. The mother and daughter pair turned to look at him and he fished out his phone.
Seeing that Kingsley was the caller, he muttered. "I need to take this." Without waiting for their response, he left the ward, going outside.
He answered the call immediately and placed the phone close to his ear. "Boss.."
Kingsley’s raggard voice came from the other end. "Jasmine wants to find out how her friend is doing. She can’t use her phone right now."
Raymond reported back. "Mrs Elm should be rest assured because her friend is well now and receiving the best care." He turned to look at the door, he could see Nicole and Hailey talking through the peephole on the door.
Kingsley reported that to Jasmine before instructing. "She wants you to bring Miss Nicole and her daughter over to the ward."
"Okay, boss."
"Also, I have work for you so come quickly," Kingsley added before ending the call.
Raymond sighed before dropping his phone in his pocket again and reentered the room.
Nicole paused what she was saying when Raymond came in. "Umm, I have a message to deliver."
Hailey nestled close to her mother in the bed, Nicole raised a brow. "What’s that?"
"Mrs Elm is in the VIP room a few rooms away and she wants to see you."
Nicole frowned. "Jasmine is in this hospital??"
Raymond said flatly. "Meningioma."
Nicole gushed out. "I know." She whimpered. "Let’s go see her." She nudged Hailey who quickly got off the bed.
"Hey, relax. You don’t need to be in such a hurry..."
"I need to. My friend is experiencing pain and I can’t just lay here receiving care while she’s there.." Nicole hurried out of the bed, the IV drip attached to her hand restricted her, and she was ready to pull it off but Raymond quickly grabbed her arms, holding her in place.
That touch stopped Nicole from pulling the IV off her wrist. Raymond looked deep into her eyes and said. "Mr Elm is here, taking care of her too. You don’t need to be so worked up. She’s stable at the moment. Just wait for me to call the doctor before we can leave. Okay?" His eyes darted between hers, and his soothing voice calmed Nicole’s racing nerves.
Nicole nodded slowly, her eyes glued to his face, taking his words for it.
Seeing that she was calm now, Raymond nodded. "Good. Just wait, I’ll call the doctor."
Nicole didn’t argue as she sat back on the bed, but she grabbed her phone to dial Jasmine’s number.
Raymond exited the room to go call the doctor. Hailey sat beside her mother. "Is Aunt Jasmine going to be okay?"
Nicole sighed," Yes, baby. Aunt Jasmine is a strong lady." Her eyes were still glued to her phone as she dialed Jasmine’s number. She added. "She’ll overcome this." It was more of a whisper to assure herself that her best friend would come out unsheathed.
Jasmine didn’t pick up the call and it made Nicole sigh repeatedly, her patience running Dry but Raymond was not yet back. Nicole dialed the number again, her finger tapping on her lap...her patience running thin with each passing second.
Again, the call went straight to voicemail and Nicole didn’t like that. Just when she thought she’d completely lose it if Raymond didn’t show up, the door was opened and Raymond walked in with a doctor.
Nicole impatiently watched as the doctor came near and checked her pulse before removing the IV. The drip was over.
Nicole didn’t waste time as she told Raymond. "Let’s leave."
Raymond nodded and they all left the room, Nicole’s heart was on her throat as she followed Raymond out of the ward.
Hailey was ahead of them, walking mindlessly while Nicole and Raymond walked side by side.
There was a silence that didn’t quite feel right between them as they walked along the long hallway.
Raymond folded his hands beside him as he said calmly. "You’ve changed."
Nicole raised her gaze to meet his but he was staring ahead. She gazed at his side profile before looking ahead again. "You too." She commented.
Raymond used his chin to point at Hailey who was skipping through the hall ahead of them. "You also gave birth." His eyes held a small flash of pain as he watched Hailey.
A pile formed on Nicole’s chest and she didn’t say a word. Raymond continued. "And you don’t seem married. No ring, why?? He doesn’t love you as much as I did?"
Nicole’s back stiffened. "Raymond..." she called out but Raymond continued.
"You left me and gave birth to a child for another man." He said, his voice broke at the end. But he wasn’t even looking in Nicole’s direction, scared that she might see the pain swirling in his eyes.
"Raymond, I don’t want to talk about this," Nicole said with a heavy heart, her eyes sinking even more. Guilt tripped her.
"Why? He is a scumbag?"
"Raymond..."
"You can leave him.." Raymond gushed out in a low voice. Persuading her, this time he turned to face her. They both stopped in their tracks. His pain was no longer concealed," I can take care of you and Hailey if he doesn’t want to."
"You know nothing." Nicole gritted out.
Raymond came near, leaning closer, his eyes darting between her face as he rushed out his words. "True, I know nothing but I know that the man who got you pregnant is a scumbag because why is there no ring on your finger??" Seeing her speechless, Raymond scoffed. "Just like I thought." He grabbed Nicole’s wrist, his voice sounded pained as he told her. "We can change that. I love you, Nic and you know that so well. Why did you leave?"
Nicole pressed her lips together, suppressing her sob as her teary eyes stared at him.
Raymond continued. "Why did you go without telling me?? For years, I’ve been wondering and worrying about you. Meanwhile—-" his voice trailed off as he bit his lower lip.
Nicole dragged her wrist away from his grip as she stuttered. "Let go."
"Nicole, I can—"
"No!!" Nicole snapped. A single Tear slipped down her left eye as she gritted out. "You can’t do nothing. I don’t want anything to do with you, Raymond." Her tears started to pour out freely. "And that was why I left you, Six years ago! Read my lips, Raymond..." she announced each word. "I. don’t. Want. You."
