Chapter 39 Just A Prey In His Eyes
Chapter 39: Chapter 39 Just A Prey In His Eyes
Jasmine hastily turned around to face Jack, her heart racing in her rib cage but she tried to maintain a cold face so as not to look scared.
A grin was plastered on Jack’s face as he watched the woman trying to act tough. His eyes narrowed slightly but that look of amusement didn’t falter. His hands were tucked into his pants pocket. "Getting tough, huh?"
Jasmine glared at Jack in his all-self glory, her eyes almost killing him on the spot."Do not ever sneak up on me like that!!" She snarled, her fingers clutched her bag tightly.
Jack just kept staring at her, his face still covered with that smile. "Okay."
Jasmine eyed him warily, wondering what he was up to. His smile was creepy.
Jack took a step closer making Jasmine stagger backwards, taking double and triple steps back. "Wha-what...don’t come near." She tried to shoo him off in panic.
Jack stopped in his tracks, that smile on his face was completely gone as he leaned closer to her. His eyes were as cold as winter. "If you think you can walk away from this unscathed ,you’re gravely mistaken. You think I’m a mere pushover?? Think again." His eyes darted between Jasmine’s face as he gritted out. " I will claw my way back to the top, I will make sure you regret crossing me. Consider this a warning. This isn’t over." With that, he leaned back and straightened his back before smiling broadly at her again as if he never said those words.
Jasmine’s face was red as she watched him change expressions again as if he didn’t just threaten her. When she finally found her voice to retort, he was gone.
A sigh escaped Jasmine’s lips, she could tell Jack’s return wasn’t going to be an easy one. He has a target which he is set out for.
’I need to be careful.’ She reminded herself before turning around and prickly walked into the company.
In the lobby, she spotted Lorraine heading towards the elevator she was going to enter too.
"Mr Qin..." Jasmine formally called out to Lorraine who had already stepped into the elevator.
Lorraine raised his gaze and saw Jasmine waving at him to wait for her. He knew she was also going to use the elevator...he can’t share this one with her.
Hastily, he pressed the top floor button, he could see Jasmine’s face falling when the doors were about to close.
Jasmine who was hurrying over to the elevator abruptly stopped in her tracks when she saw Lorraine press the buttons there and the elevator doors closed.
Jasmine tightened her grip on the handle of her bag, her eyes turned cold.
"What the fuck is wrong with him??" She muttered under her breath through gritted teeth.
Lorraine was taking this too far, she thought he was kidding when he said he would not come near her because of Kingsley.
Rolling her eyes, she walked straight to the elevator when it was empty, she entered the elevator and pressed the top floor button.
Jasmine let out a mouthful of air before adjusting to the end of the elevator to relax her back.
The elevator doors were about to fully close when a hand held it, stopping the movement.
Jasmine raised her lazy eyes to see who just stopped the doors from closing, her throat popped up and down when she saw the man.
It was a middle-aged man, also a departmental head. He smiled a little awkwardly at her and she nodded at him.
"You came in quite early today." He commented when the door closed, he quickly adjusted to the other side of the elevator, creating a safe distance between them.
Jasmine threw him a side look before clearing her throat. "I guess I did."
Her tone was enough to tell the man not to talk more, she didn’t need the conversation...or maybe she didn’t want to talk to him because he was an old pervert.
This man has a family but still wants to keep Jasmine by his side. He has asked Jasmine out on several occasions which she turned down politely.
Maybe, he stopped because he got the news that she was married to Kingsley Elm.
Because of the chill of Kingsley’s name or the thought of kingsley who was a rumored murderer, nobody wanted to approach Jasmine to ask her out again...most especially, this man.
Yet again, another advantage of marrying Kingsley.
The middle-aged man stood there calmly, his eyes were looking straight ahead, he didn’t even want to come even a step closer to Jasmine.
Just a few days ago, he was stopped on his way back home by the crazy maniac called Kingsley Elm...
He could remember how Kingsley cornered him and glared down at him so that he almost wet his pants. Kingsley’s words still linger in his head.
Kingsley had said to him. "I got info about your sneaky moves around my wife...But here’s a firm warning to you, if you still love your ruined life and that of your family...Then stay the fuck out of my wife’s face. The earlier you start doing this, the better for you and your miserable family." Even the way Kingsley had patted his shoulder sent a thousand bursts of electricity through his veins.
Jasmine threw the man a side look, her brows joined when she saw how the main was almost pressing himself on the elevator walls.
Jasmine didn’t think much about his behavior, soon, the elevator door opened and the man was the first to rush out...unusually.
He was running to his department as if his head was on fire.
Jasmine furrowed her brows before coming out of the elevator too.
"That’s weird." She commented lowly, watching the man run out of sight. He used to always want to pester her, he wanted to glue her then... not like she loved it but this behavior was a little too strange.
Her thoughts were cut off when her phone rang and she picked up the call. "Hey, Nico."
"Hey, how are you doing??" Nicole’s voice came from the other end. Jasmine could hear the zipping of bags.
"You’re packing your stuff?? Are you running off already?" She teased as she walked into her department.
The people there greeted and she smiled at them while heading towards her cubicle.
"No, I and Hailey just finished unpacking. I called to remind you of our weekend plans..." Nico grinned from ear to ear. "I found this bubbling bar not far from my apartment, it’ll be fun to crash there at night."
Jasmine slumped on her chair, and a tired sigh left her mouth. "What about Hailey?"
"I found this trustworthy babysitter for her, it will be okay." Nicole appraised.
"Okay then. Count me in tomorrow night." Jasmine dropped her bag on the table before relaxing her back on the chair, massaging her nape.
"9 pm on the dot."
Jasmine hummed."I’ll think about it before reaching out to you." With that, they bid their goodbyes before ending the call.
She couldn’t wait to unwind on a Friday night. Work and life have been stressful, she needed to use some good music she could rock to and bubble with alcohol and some gigolos will do.
The thought of it was already making her day start right, totally forgetting about the problem named Jack.
Jasmine started to work, for the whole day,she didn’t catch a glimpse of Lorraine.
Even when she went out to get coffee, she didn’t see him or maybe he was really avoiding her. In between lunchtime, she sent Kingsley a text message, asking if he was still going to accompany her to the party later that evening.
{I’m still down for it.}~~Husband.
That was his short reply and Jasmine pouted her lips slightly, he was still mad at her. She made a mental note to get him something before heading home after work.
The day dragged on slowly before it was finally closing hours, Jasmine hurried out of the office and got into her car. She had less than three hours to get dressed and she needed to crash by a store to get Kingsley a gift.
She drove downtown to a big mall, initially, she thought she could just come in and pick a gift and pay for it.
Unfortunately, she got to the store but got confused about what to get for Kingsley. He was rich and had almost everything already, picking a gift for him was the hardest thing she has encountered since she was reborn.
After much deliberation, Jasmine settled for a tie clip of different colors, she bought red, black, and blue. She also bought a golden wrist watch and it kinda leaked her pocket.
"All to please him so he can happily follow me to the party." She muttered like a mantra, walking gracefully out of the store complex.
She dropped the bag on the seat close by. The car rattled on, the engine coming back to life.
Jasmine drove back into town, heading straight home. The drive took a while before she got home.
Her back started to ache a little but she pulled herself out of her car, carrying the bag along.
On getting to the living room, she saw Kingsley sitting on the couch, no one else was there, just his back was turned to her.
She spotted his suit on the arm of the chair...he probably just clocked off work too.
Jasmine paused close to the door, her eyes lingered everywhere before resting on the man’s head again.
"Welcome back," Kingsley said casually, not turning to look at her. He was sitting there, facing the fire place.
Jasmine chewed on her lower lip before entering the living room fully. "Thank you." She said, coming towards him.
Kingsley raised his head to look at her and Jasmine swallowed hard nervously when he glanced at her with that similar cold look from early that morning. This time around, his eyes were even more colder than before, as if he was staring at his prey...
