Chapter 96: Rule 96: Spacing cannot be abandoned (Second Update)
He Ximei inwardly cursed Su Guisheng and his wife a few times, thinking they had really fallen into the pit of money; for the sake of money they truly dared to do anything.
Having gotten back the paddy field, the family could plant more rice. With these additional two acres of paddy fields, even if another mouth was added to the family, there would still be enough to eat.
"Xiaoqi," while going to sleep, Xiaofeng entered the space and asked, "How can I cure the eldest son of the Wu Family without anyone noticing?"
After spending time with him, Xiaofeng had found that Wu Ershun was not bad; at least he was good to the eldest son of the Wu Family. To treat the eldest son’s illness, Wu Ershun had been really trying to make his presence felt to Sixth Master.
Sixth Master: Could it be this kid comes to my place often just because he likes the way I cook?
"Master, you could give him some appetizing dishes. Of course, these dishes would have been blessed by the Spiritual Mirror Forest. As long as he’s willing to eat them, together with other treatments, healing him wouldn’t be hard," Xiaoqi responded.
"You mean, I just prepare the appetizing dishes and then leave them under the sky of the Spiritual Mirror Forest for a few days, and that’s it?"
"Not for a few days, just a few minutes will do," Xiaoqi said, with hands clasped behind his back, resembling an old man, "There is a saying, ’a day in heaven is like a year on earth.’ Though our Spiritual Mirror cannot compare with heaven, time here can indeed be contrasted with the outside world."
"Okay, got it. Next time Wu Ershun helps me sell chili sauce, I’ll give him a few jars of appetizers to take to his big brother," Xiaofeng decided. She didn’t want to accept help for nothing, so after much consideration, she thought that treating Wu Ershun was the only way to return the favor.
"Master, whatever you do is your business, I’m still a little kid; sleep is very important to me." Xiaoqi yawned, ignored Xiaofeng, and went back to sleep in the mirror.
Xiaofeng came out of the space and heard arguing from the village; it seemed like Xiaotao and her mother were quarreling, complaining about her mother showing favoritism.
Her mother scolded Xiaotao, then came the sound of Xiaotao’s crying.
Listening to this crying, Xiaofeng didn’t feel much of anything.
In other words, what if it were herself in trouble today?
The next morning, Xiaofeng soaked some dried radishes to make sure they weren’t too salty before chopping them up, and soon a plate of stir-fried dried radishes was ready.
Since the family’s paddy field had been reclaimed, He Ximei went to the fields early in the morning to check what had been planted and when they could start planting rice.
After lunch, Ye Cheng stopped his car at the Threshing Ground, and Wu Ershun got out from the car, "Su Xiaofeng, do you still have some of that chili from yesterday? I’ll take some down to sell for you."
Yesterday, Sixth Master had promised to give his big brother a good look, and since he had promised Sixth Master he would help Su Xiaofeng, he had to keep his word.
"It’s really bothersome for you." Su Xiaofeng loaded a box of chili sauce into the trunk of the car and then handed over another bag, "Ershun, this jar of chili sauce is for your family. And these dried radishes, they’re especially appetizing for someone with no appetite."
Wu Ershun laughed as he took the bag, "This is why they say you’re considerate. Knowing my big brother has lost his appetite, you deliberately prepared an appetizer for him. Thanks a lot."
Ye Cheng glanced at the bag in Wu Ershun’s hand, squinting slightly.
"One dollar and fifty cents a bottle, right? I’ll settle with you later," Wu Ershun remembered something important and poked his head out of the window to add.
"No rush," Su Xiaofeng waved to the two men.
"What is that?" Ye Cheng glanced at the bag in Wu Ershun’s hand.
"It’s a jar of chili sauce and some dried radishes," Wu Ershun answered after a look, "This Su Xiaofeng, I guess she felt indebted for my help with selling her chili sauce, so she specifically prepared an appetizing dish for my big brother. Chengge, do you think if my brother weren’t sick, it would be feasible to have Su Xiaofeng as my sister-in-law?"
It was a pity, with his big brother sick and lacking the will to live, let alone considering marriage. Otherwise, Su Xiaofeng would really be suitable as his sister-in-law.
"Would your big brother be willing to raise someone else’s child?" Ye Cheng asked lightly.
"My big brother is rather proud. Unless he was ill, he wouldn’t fancy just any woman, not to mention raising someone else’s child," Wu Ershun said regretfully, then his eyes lit up, "Chengge, it must be tough for Su Xiaofeng as a woman raising a child alone. How about I try to find a match for her?"
Ye Cheng hit the brakes hard, almost sliding into the paddy field by the roadside.
Wu Ershun, caught off guard, banged his head against the doorframe.
"Chengge..." Wu Ershun rubbed the sore spot on his head, "What’s wrong?"
He couldn’t think of anything he’d said wrong.
Looking sideways, Chengge still seemed as cold and noble as ever.
Ye Cheng resumed driving, unsure of where his irritation had come from, "Nothing. Last night when I went back, grandpa prescribed some traditional medicine. When you go back, let your big brother take it."
After dropping Wu Ershun home, Ye Cheng’s gaze lingered on the jar of dried radishes on the passenger seat. Wu Ershun came over just in time, following Ye Cheng’s gaze and laughing, "Chengge, don’t despise this. Take this jar of dried radishes back with you. I remember Grandpa likes Su Xiaofeng’s cooking quite a bit."
It was not certain that his big brother would even eat it; such a delicious thing would be a waste if not enjoyed.
Ye Cheng did not respond, merely instructed Wu Ershun on the method of decocting the medicine and its dosage, then turned back.
Seeing her grandson come in with a box, Grandma Wu smiled, "Shunzi, what have you bought? It looks quite hefty."
Wu Ershun didn’t answer Granny Wu’s words but just shook the package of Chinese medicine at her, "Granny, see this? This is the medicine Sixth Master prepared for my elder brother. My big brother can be saved."
"Buddha bless us," Granny Wu folded her hands in prayer, "If the Sixth Master truly cures Yifan, the Wu Family will definitely thank him generously."
"I’m going to make the medicine for my big brother."
"Oh, I’ll come too."
Watching from behind the door as his big brother drank the medicine, Wu Ershun happily left with the box in his arms.
Nothing mattered more than his big brother’s willingness to cooperate with the treatment.
...
Sixth Master looked at the radish dry added to the dining table, picked up a chopstick-full, and nibbled carefully, "Hmm, it’s quite tasty. Where did it come from?"
"Su Xiaofeng sent it."
"That girl." Sixth Master wanted to pick up more, but Ye Cheng moved the bottle away, "Old man, didn’t you say you didn’t like radish dry?"
"That was in the past; my tastes have changed now."
Ye Cheng snorted coldly and continued to eat, occasionally grabbing a stick of radish dry.
When going to sleep that night, Ye Cheng felt as if an electric current had passed through his brain - it was fast and fleeting. He also fell asleep a few minutes faster than usual.
...
The wedding of Su Xiaotao and Liu An was set without delay. It was said that Liu An paid nine hundred yuan as a bride price, then the bride’s family pitched in with a bicycle and some bedroom essentials to close the deal.
In the standards of Lihua Village, this didn’t count for much.
Even the least attractive girls in the village had a bride price of a thousand yuan; not to mention Su Xiaotao was neither bad-looking nor from a poor family.
In the village, her family was considered wealthy — not the wealthiest, but certainly not the poorest.
Su Xiaotao had been hiding at home for the past few days, probably too ashamed to see anyone. Her wedding with Liu An was scheduled for a month later.
Liu An had just come from Su Xiaotao’s home, all smiles.
After all, he was now Su Xiaotao’s man, and when he visited his mother-in-law’s home, of course, he would be treated to good food and drink. Passing by Su Xiaofeng’s house and seeing her busy at work, his yellow teeth showed as he sneered, "Su Xiaofeng, you really think I couldn’t live without you? I’ll tell you this, even if you married an idiot, they might not accept you."
He wouldn’t have considered marrying Su Xiaofeng if he didn’t expect her to help him earn money.
Su Xiaofeng, who was sitting at the doorstep cleaning glass bottles, stopped her work and said with a slight parting of her red lips, "What I am isn’t for you to comment on. You should be grateful it wasn’t me who had the accident; otherwise..."
Remembering how she had once gotten him locked up, Liu An’s face turned fierce, "Su Xiaofeng, that last affair isn’t over yet, just you wait."
As if he was nobody. When Su Xiaofeng sent him in that day, he had to regain his ground. How else could he continue to manage in this place?
Su Xiaofeng ignored him.
If people didn’t offend her, she didn’t offend them.
But if someone was asking for death by coming to her, that was a different matter entirely.
Liu An snorted coldly and strutted off.
He was now Lihua Village’s son-in-law, and he would have plenty of opportunities to visit Lihua Village in the future. As for how to deal with this Su Xiaofeng, he would have to think carefully.
That evening, while Su Xiaofeng’s family was having dinner, the great-uncle came over.
Because the two mu of paddy had gone, Ma Donghua hadn’t been looking at him properly these past few days. Having dinner, Donghua told him to go and give a few knocks on Guaizi’s door.
"Guaizi," Su Zongming cleared his throat, "is having dinner."
"Great-uncle, have you eaten?"
"I have." Su Zongming glanced at Xiaofeng, "The paddy field has been returned to you, but there’s still something I need to discuss with you."
Old Guaizi poured Su Zongming a bowl of tea, remembering the despicable deeds of Guisheng and his wife, and said with a muted tone, "Go ahead."
"Xiaofeng being pregnant before marriage, had it been ancient times, she would have been drowned in a pig cage. Though it’s not the ancient era now, we can’t disregard our ancestral rules. Wouldn’t you agree? If she does not wish to marry, she must at least give an explanation to our clan."
