Chapter 95: 95 sold out

Listening to Master Liu’s words, Xiaofeng envied his wife, secretly thinking that Grandmother Liu must be a fortunate person to have such a man meticulously care for her culinary needs.

"This chili sauce is pretty good, it really enhances the flavor of chopped chili fish head," Master Liu scooped a little chili into his bowl. "It has a strong aroma of alcohol, yet it isn’t just about the alcohol. The spiciness is just right, and it leaves a lingering taste that makes it a perfect accompaniment for plain rice even without any dishes."

Of course, this is only for those who love spicy food. For those who don’t eat spicy food, this chili sauce is like nectar crafted by gods, versatile for everyone.

"Right, I did add some white wine along with some spices." Indeed, she had added a bit of white wine to increase the shelf life of the chili sauce.

"This chili sauce can be directly sold to restaurants, with this chili sauce, a dish like this would instantly get an extra twenty points. You know, for chopped chili fish head, the flavor of the chopped chili is most crucial; if that tastes right, the fish tastes right."

Reminded by Master Liu, Xiaofeng nodded vigorously, "What Master Liu said is true."

Ye Cheng scooped some into his bowl, tasted it, and then took another spoonful, looking at Wu Ershun, "Doesn’t your family have a relative who runs a big restaurant in the city?"

Wu Ershun was in the midst of battling with the chicken. Hearing Brother Cheng’s words, he quickly responded, "That’s right, but the taste of the food there is just average, nowhere near Master Liu’s culinary skills."

If they were to really compare, it was like heaven and earth.

"I’m not bragging, but my cooking skills are unparalleled," Master Liu placed the chili sauce jar in front of Ershun. "You and Xiaofeng are friends. It shouldn’t be too much to ask you to help her out a little."

Wu Ershun nodded eagerly, "No big deal at all, Xiaofeng, how much more do you have at home? I’ll help you sell as much as you have."

It’s just a jar of chili sauce after all, no big deal.

Xiaofeng’s mouth twitched.

Suddenly, she remembered that Wu Ershun was from the Wu Family, who were big landowners in the county. If he really were to help her sell the chili sauce, it indeed would be a small effort for him.

"I chopped up twenty jars just yesterday, kept one at home, the rest I sent with my aunt to sell in the city." They were selling for one yuan and fifty cents each, but she wasn’t sure if they would sell well.

"From now on, just give them to me, I’ll help you market them," Wu Ershun patted his chest, "It’s an easy task."

Xiaofeng didn’t respond. It was effortless for Wu Ershun to help her, but she couldn’t accept it so casually, maybe she should let Xiaoqi give it a try, to see if he could help his elder brother.

After the meal, Wu Ershun wanted Ye Cheng to check again on his elder brother, who had been quite temperamental these past few days. He couldn’t even deliver food without him throwing a tantrum, it seemed like he wanted to starve himself to death.

Ye Cheng was not sure about the situation. Master Liu, however, was intrigued, "I’ll go have a look; maybe I’ll find a way."

He had a friend who was previously involved in researching in this area, perhaps there might indeed be a way.

"Master Liu, if you can save my elder brother, you’ll be like my own grandfather," Wu Ershun said excitedly, barely able to keep his mouth closed, "Let’s head there now."

His elder brother hadn’t eaten in two days. This way, he wouldn’t last three months; he might not even last a few days.

After lunch, Wu Ershun and Master Liu headed down to the city, while Xiaofeng and Old Su returned to Lihua Village.

On the way, Old Su asked Xiaofeng, "Was there some issue at home this morning?"

Otherwise, how could his uncle’s family have been so kind as to return the paddy field so suddenly? He didn’t feel it was appropriate to ask in front of Master Liu and his family just now.

"I’m not sure what happened exactly. I had a bowl of chicken soup at my uncle’s house in the morning and went to pick vegetables afterward. When I came back, I saw the villagers had cornered Liu An and Taozi near the straw stack, and later both families went back to discuss the marriage, probably happening in a few months," Xiaofeng replied nonchalantly.

Old Su was honest but not naive. Frowning, he said, "Liu An was called by your aunt, wasn’t he?"

The morning invitation for chicken soup was taken kindly but it wasn’t long before Liu An showed up. What Guisheng’s family was plotting was clear as day.

"I guess so, I didn’t see it," Xiaofeng thought of how quickly the paddy field was returned to her family, hesitantly adding, "It must’ve been my aunt who called him, otherwise my uncle’s family wouldn’t have returned the paddy field so quickly."

Old Su sighed deeply, "Truly needless worries."

When they got home, Old Su’s third uncle approached to discuss the paddy field matter; Old Su nodded, acknowledging he understood.

"We’ll make and sell chili sauce." Although it is unclear how well He Ximei was doing selling it at the train station, they definitely need to make some more for now.

"Xiaofeng, take as much as you want, after all, we’re family. Why bother selling?" Auntie laughed when she heard Xiaofeng’s words.

"I’m serious." Xiaofeng didn’t want anything for free: "Whatever the price is in town, I’ll pay you the same. I want it all."

"You’re serious?" Auntie rose from the ground: "Do you really want that much?"

"Yes." Xiaofeng glanced at it, it really wasn’t much, probably only about twenty to thirty pounds.

"Mom." Auntie’s daughter-in-law, Zhang Meihua, chimed in: "Since Xiaofeng wants it, let’s sell it to her, whatever the town’s price is, any amount will do."

Such a small amount of chili peppers, selling them would only fetch a few bucks; they’re hardly worth much.

"Auntie." Xiaofeng smiled: "If you sell it to me at a low price, I really can’t accept it. I plan to go big in business later, and I don’t want to take this little advantage from you."

Listening to Xiaofeng, Auntie and Zhang Meihua both laughed: "This child, listen to how well she speaks. Alright, we’ll give it all to you; our Xiaofeng is going to be a big businesswoman in the future."

Even though they agreed to charge the normal price, Auntie still gave a few more pounds, and Xiaofeng didn’t bother to argue.

Xiaofeng then started working.

"Let me help you chop." Auntie said, seeing Xiaofeng, a young girl, dealing with the peppers, and she took the knife from her hand: "My dear, why would you want to sell this? I’m not trying to discourage you, but I don’t see it working out."

Chili peppers are nothing special; every household has them.

Xiaofeng just lightly smiled.

True, chili peppers are everywhere, but delicious and flavorful ones are hard to come by.

As it grew dark, Xiaofeng had sealed thirty-five bottles of chili sauce just when He Ximei and Su Peng returned.

As soon as He Ximei arrived, she placed the money on the dining table: "Xiaofeng, Xiaofeng, come over here."

Who would have thought that the chili sauce she was skeptical about sold out.

Xiaofeng was boiling water in the kitchen for a bath and could tell from He Ximei’s loud and fluctuating voice that today’s chili sauce sales went well.

"See, all sold out." He Ximei grinned: "At first no one asked, and I wasn’t in the mood to shout about it, but a couple carrying luggage, as if they were about to travel far, passed by me and asked about the price of this chili sauce. I said one dollar fifty per bottle, they initially thought it was expensive, but after a small taste, they immediately bought two bottles."

Speaking of the sales situation at the train station, He Ximei was thrilled: "After selling those two bottles, my confidence soared, and after shouting a few times, they all sold out."

Who would have thought that once the chili sauce reached the train station, it would become so appealing, beyond her expectations.

Uncle Su, listening to He Ximei’s words, also felt reassured; having buyers was all that mattered.

"This is a good start." Xiaofeng smiled: "I made more than thirty bottles again this afternoon; Auntie, are you going again tomorrow?"

"You’re so quick." He Ximei was startled; that was faster than expected: "Yeah, I must go."

Xiaofeng pulled twenty dollars from the table: "Auntie, aside from the cost, we’ll split the profit from selling the chili sauce right down the middle."

He Ximei put away the remaining ten dollars; though it wasn’t much, it was still an income: "Okay, no matter how little, it’s good to have some income."

During dinner that evening, He Ximei heard that the family’s paddy field had also returned, and her jaw dropped, unable to close it for a long time. My goodness, she had worried a lot about this paddy field and had many arguments with Ma Donghua, who just refused to admit it. She had merely taken a trip to the city, and the paddy field was back.

So, she and Pengzi might have missed some big drama.

"Why are they so easy to talk to all of a sudden?" He Ximei still couldn’t believe it; this wasn’t Su Guisheng and his wife’s usual style.

Xiaofeng lightly put down her bowl, feeling a bit full: "Perhaps they are happy about successfully arranging a match between Su Xiaotao and Liu An."

Though she didn’t end up with Liu An, facilitating Su Xiaotao’s match with him was a success nonetheless.
