Chapter 38: A complete exam.

The next minute, Sylus was waiting inside the chamber, where he was supposed to take his exam.

It was dark and spacious, making every step he took as loud as possible.

Then again, he didn’t need to go too far.

Right in front of him was a metal hand, lengthened from the darkness and holding the gesture of a handshake.

’I’m guessing this is the equipment I’ll be using for the test.’

Just to be sure, he positioned his hand on it and summoned his runes.

[You have activated the divine blessing of knowledge.]

Name: Mana Pressure System.

Uses: For transporting mana from one place to another. It is not efficient and is only used for testing students.

’Hm... so it is the equipment.’

Sylus sighed as he withdrew his hand.

"How long do you intend to observe me? Is the machine broken or what?"

His gaze was now fixed on the left side of the room.

The moment he had set foot inside the chamber, he could already tell people were monitoring him.

He wondered why the room was dark and then came to the conclusion that they wanted to hide their faces.

Following his question was a male voice.

"The third prince of the Astrodial family. It is an honor to have you here with us."

The voice resounded from the darkness.

Glowering, Sylus was about to take a step.

"Ah—please don’t try to approach us. I assure you, keeping our identity hidden will bring no harm to you. It is merely a procedure we chose to carry on."

"Am I to believe you did this to the other students as well?" Sylus asked.

The stillness that came after was deafening.

Until yet another person chose to speak from another corner of the room.

"No, we are afraid not."

Sylus took a deep breath.

Allowing the next person to speak.

"As we said before, this will bring you no harm. It is only meant to protect us."

’I see how it is.’

If Sylus was understanding the situation right, the reason they were choosing to conceal their faces was so they wouldn’t get killed if he ended up failing the exam.

For example, a few years ago, a young princess was so enraged by her failure that she vented her frustration on the teachers who had scored her.

She had her guards kill them before they could leave the campus; some even claimed it to be an assassination, but many knew the truth.

However, that incident never happened again, and now Sylus knew why.

"I’d like to begin my exam now."

"Very well," the male voice persisted. "Please place your hand on the machine; once the machine is turned on, you must remain still and endure the test until you have passed. Failure to do so is an immediate F."

Sylus nodded his head, hinting that he understood.

"Let us begin."

Soon after, the metal hand began to pulsate with energy—not the kind that would burn your skin away if you came in contact with it, but enough to tell that mana was running through it.

All Sylus needed to do was make contact with the machine, just as he had earlier.

Should be easy.

Once he did that, the exam would automatically commence.

So, he did.

His face was etched with conviction as he touched the metal hand, allowing the sudden flow of mana to escape into his body.

’What the—’

It was fast and swift, but thankfully, Sylus’s reflexes were just as quick.

He began channeling his own mana, trying to thrust away the excess amount of mana trying to flow inside his body.

This was where many people failed—during the first flow of mana, the machine released.

It was simple, really; all the teachers wanted was for the students to stabilize the unwanted mana entering their bodies with their own mana.

If the mana within their body was uncontrolled and irregular, it would collide with their magic circuit, causing a rebound that would bring them to their knees.

Most students were unable to do this; as such, they ended up failing from the start.

Some were able to tolerate the exam for a while, but that wouldn’t last long, as they would be exhausted later on, giving the mana easy access to their circuits.

But there was one part of the whole process that many people were unable to do—

Which was forcing the mana back into the machine using your very own mana.

Only then could you pass the exams.

While it sounded easy on paper, it was extremely difficult.

’I can see why people failed this exam compared to the rest. It’s like a thousand needles are stabbing every inch of my body.’

Sylus was doing a good job pushing the unwanted mana away from his shapeless magic circuits; still, it was causing a great deal of pain to him.

Not that anyone could tell—his expression was as calm as night.

The only thing the teachers saw was a constant flow of mana around Sylus, like rays of light.

It sparked, brightening up the already darkened room in a beautiful radiance of lights.

’I just need to push it out—but gently. If I rush, I could end up injuring myself from the inside.’

He felt like he was standing under a waterfall with high pressure and was forced to hold up a shield to stop the water from touching him.

More mana came into play, and you could almost see Sylus take a step back.

That very second, he poured out more of his mana to counter the machine—all the while remaining as calm as possible.

It took a long time for him to finally show signs of winning, as his mana was seen clearly overpowering the machine.

As they watched, the teachers were dumbfounded.

Their murmurs could be heard.

Soon, the machine that was once standing went off, its bright light dying in an instant.

While Sylus did force all the mana back into the machine, he didn’t expect it to work so quickly.

’It’s over?’

He questioned as he breathed heavily, his knees buckling, only to catch himself.
