Chapter 713: Chapter 713: The Second Young Master Chose Me
When Abigail Green left Headmaster Theodore’s office, she carried a pile of medical data and a registration form.
It was a registration form for an international medical competition.
Unlike the previous university student medical skills competition, this was a truly professional medical event, comparing medical research project outcomes rather than medical skills.
The awards in such a competition held national significance.
Headmaster Theodore meant that if Abigail could get into the top ten in this competition, she would smoothly become an official researcher, for which he could apply for government protection on her behalf.
Coincidentally, a cardiac surgery project in the medical university’s research lab was still short of one spot, which could be allocated to Abigail.
However, temporarily joining might cause resentment from others, so Cameron Theodore wanted Abigail to be mentally prepared.
Abigail originally intended to refuse, but what Headmaster Theodore said next made her decide otherwise.
The progress of this project had been stagnant for a long time, and the topic was actually an idea she proposed during her lifetime.
She had even written a few papers on it, all of which were included in the SCI index.
Later, she wholeheartedly wanted to help Jeffrey Foster; she went to Sincere Hospital directly to assist Jeffrey in his research, leaving her previous idea aside.
Unexpectedly, a researcher from Medical University pursued this project after the "death" of Dr. Smith.
Even more unexpectedly, she found herself returning to the unfinished business from before.
She had a natural advantage in this project anyway.
Thinking of this, Abigail’s expression relaxed slightly as she walked towards the outside of the political education office.
Hughes quietly followed from the side.
Abigail did not return to the classroom; instead, she called Lena Locke to briefly explain the situation.
After hearing the news, Lena Locke was very reluctant: "So, Abigail, you won’t be attending classes anymore?"
"Hmm, but I will take the final exams." Abigail explained softly.
"Okay, this might be the best. I’ll give you key points to study for the finals." Lena Locke thought of Abigail’s current predicament at school; this was indeed the best choice. Besides, Abigail staying at school was a waste anyway.
Abigail couldn’t help but laugh, "Alright."
After hanging up the phone, Abigail walked downstairs, unexpectedly encountering Bertha Swift.
Compared to Abigail, who seemed lonely, Bertha was nearly sought after, surrounded by three or four boys and girls.
Abigail glanced at her, intending to avoid her, but others had different plans. As soon as Abigail turned to the side, a girl next to Bertha stretched out her leg to block her, "Hey, weren’t you being arrogant in the classroom earlier? Planning to sneak away now that you see Bertha here?"
Abigail hadn’t noticed the girl before. Upon hearing her voice, she recognized her as one of the girls who insulted her in the classroom and then embarrassingly fled. Abigail glanced at the foot blocking her path, waved Hughes back, and said humorously, "Her? The main person?"
Standing by the side, Bertha’s face turned pale, and she shouted at the girl, "Liz!"
But the girl named Liz ignored Bertha, staring at Abigail angrily, "What? I’m wrong? Bertha is the official lady of the Piers Group. What are you? A plastic surgery freak competing with Bertha for the campus beauty and men!"
Liz Duran still begrudged Abigail and Lena for humiliating her earlier; her so-called defense of Bertha was merely to save face.
Abigail’s lips curled into a thin smile as she pointed at Liz to Bertha, "Is she your friend?"
Bertha felt very embarrassed. Although gossip about Brandon staying overnight in her boudoir was everywhere, even her parents called to encourage her to take advantage of the situation, she knew the truth. Brandon didn’t even touch her and hadn’t really stayed overnight in her room.
Those rumors were just a cover-up created by Brandon.
She suspected where Brandon actually went last night. Feeling Abigail’s words tightening around her, she paled but couldn’t deny the connection with Liz, since enjoying their flattery but denying it would tarnish her reputation in the circle.
She avoided Abigail’s question and looked at Liz, "Liz, apologize to Abigail."
"Why should I apologize if I’m not wrong!" Liz, already humiliated once, thought Bertha would back her up but didn’t expect her to ask for an apology instead.
"First, spreading baseless rumors about plastic surgery. Second, the main character? Are you referring to Bertha? Do you not know that being with someone before the breakup is considered being ’the other woman’? How did you become the main character?" Since Bertha tacitly admitted that Liz was her friend, standing up for her, Abigail was unreserved; after all, it was Miss Swift who actively sought out Eva Bell to replace her.
"How dare you call Bertha a homewrecker! Abigail Green, who do you think you are..."
Slap!
Before Liz could finish, Bertha couldn’t tolerate it anymore and slapped Liz, leaving Liz stunned, staring at Bertha, "You..."
"Don’t claim to know me anymore." Bertha originally felt like a joke in front of Abigail; trying to maintain dignity without explanations still kept her relatively composed. But Liz’s antics ticked Abigail off, branding her as a homewrecker, while Liz simply shouted making it obvious.
"Bertha, I was doing this for you..."
"For her good, you should shut up instead of embarrassing her further." Liz still looked aggrieved; Abigail coolly interrupted.
Bertha looked at Abigail and bowed, "I apologize on her behalf."
Abigail gazed deeply at Bertha, slightly surprised at the honesty in her eyes. Despite being rivals, she nodded, intending to let it go. But as she passed by, Bertha, sincere about her apology, wasn’t soft and said suddenly, "I know your feelings for Brandon run deep, but he chose me."
Abigail’s steps halted, ready to retort but refrained. Making it a woman-against-woman thing felt too low; she continued forward.
Just recovering from the slap, Liz heard Bertha’s words and burst into mocking laughter.
"Apologize!" Hughes’s voice, youthful yet penetratingly cold, silenced Liz.
Abigail was slightly surprised but did not stop him.
Liz, frightened by Hughes’s gaze, stammered, "You... who are you?"
"Apologize, or I won’t hesitate to hit a woman." Hughes’s voice brimmed with suppressed anger.
Liz, scared, sought help from Bertha and the others, but they distanced themselves after Bertha’s slap. Wary yet sensing Abigail’s company wasn’t to be messed with, Liz reluctantly trembled and looked at Abigail, "I... I’m sorry."
