Chapter 614: Chapter 614: The Young Master’s Decoy Strategy
Alex didn’t dare delay.
Three minutes later, the doctor arrived in the ward.
Abigail quietly watched the doctor treat the man’s wound, her face scrunching up.
Earlier, she was so embarrassed and annoyed that she had forgotten about his injury.
Brandon Piers sat beside, his face looking as calm as water. In fact, he had been paying close attention to Abigail’s reaction, feeling pleased. It seemed that his ruse had worked.
After the doctor left, Brandon lay on the hospital bed silently.
Alex sensibly withdrew.
Abigail lay under the blanket for a long time but couldn’t help herself, "Does it hurt?"
"No." Brandon continued to pretend to be strong, but his brows tightly furrowed.
"Let me see." Abigail frowned. How could it not hurt? The doctor had spent quite some time treating his wound.
But Brandon didn’t want Abigail to see. It did hurt, but his intention was more for her to feel sorry for him rather than actually seeing the wound. So, he deliberately raised an eyebrow, "Are you prepared to take responsibility after looking?"
Abigail remained unmoved, still staring at him.
Brandon felt uncomfortable under her gaze. He rubbed his nose with his finger, "It’s really nothing. I just called the doctor to make you worry about me."
"Turn around," Abigail ordered hoarsely.
"I..."
"Didn’t you want me to take responsibility? Look and then take responsibility," Abigail interrupted Brandon’s refusal.
Brandon froze. It was too tempting!
Gazing into Abigail’s eyes, Brandon hesitated for a long while but eventually relented, "Alright then, but don’t forget what you just said."
Actually, Brandon wasn’t sure about the state of his back injury. It had hurt when he had fallen, but he didn’t think it was that serious. Compared to the injuries he had suffered since childhood, this was nothing. He had called the doctor earlier just to make her worry about him. Now, having her see it felt a bit awkward. But no matter how awkward, Abigail’s proposal was too enticing.
Brandon turned around and lifted his shirt.
Abigail’s eyes fell on the five different-sized wounds. Although they were wrapped in gauze, she could judge their size and depth based on experience. This was called "nothing"?
One of the wounds even had visible stitches. How deep did it have to be to need stitches? Abigail could almost imagine how terrifying it would look without the gauze. Since she woke up, he had been making a fuss—lying on her, squeezing into the same hospital bed, and she had kicked him off the bed...
Staring at the scattered wounds on the man’s pale skin, Abigail’s eyes reddened.
She was clearly very angry at him, but seeing him injured made her heart ache.
What was with this man? He wasn’t trying to lose weight, yet in just four months, he had become this thin?
Looking at the lines from his shoulders to his waist, Abigail felt a burning sensation in her nose.
This man was always hard on himself, with clear fitness goals. He wanted both muscles and symmetry. But now? He was almost skin and bones, and he had the nerve to call her small-chested.
Brandon noticed Abigail’s prolonged silence and curiously turned back to see her tearful eyes. His heart nearly shattered. He quickly lowered his shirt and awkwardly sat by her bed, "Why are you crying?"
"I’m not crying," Abigail replied sulkily, turning her head away so he couldn’t see her face.
Looking at her small form, Brandon touched her nose with his distinct knuckles, "Feels bad?"
"No." Abigail choked out.
"Still being stubborn. They said you’ve been quick to tears since your amnesia. I guess they were right. Look, I’m fine. I’m not even as hurt as you are." Brandon’s heart melted seeing her red eyes and nose. He climbed back to his own bed, lying next to Abigail, "Be good, don’t cry. Already had a concussion, cry too much and you’ll end up silly."
Abigail wasn’t crying, but her eyes couldn’t help but water. At his words, she glared at him fiercely, "You’re the silly one. Your whole family is silly."
"What should we do then? You’re part of my family," Brandon couldn’t help but laugh, thinking how adorably confused his little Abigail was.
Even if she asked for his life, he’d gladly give it.
"I’m not part of your family. We’ve already broken up," Abigail reminded him, not forgetting their split.
Brandon didn’t argue, "Fine, fine. Not now, but in the future." He’d go to the civil bureau to make it official, ensuring she couldn’t claim otherwise.
Abigail, "..."
"Still hurting?" Brandon asked, leaning close to her ear.
His lips brushed against her ear, intimate like a dream. Abigail suddenly felt a pang of grievance, "Yes, it hurts a lot."
Brandon immediately sat up, "I’ll call the doctor."
He reached for the call button, but a small hand grabbed his arm.
Brandon turned to look at her worriedly, "What’s wrong? I’ll ask the doctor to give you some pain relief. It’s my fault for upsetting you."
It was the first time she had heard him so carefully and tenderly call her "baby." It felt awkward yet indescribably sweet. She sniffled, "I’m fine. I’ll just sleep a bit."
She was in pain, both physically and from the memories of their breakup and his weary, injured state.
Abigail felt frightened. She feared getting back together only to break up again. But the thought of not being together hurt even more. This conflicting emotion tormented her.
Brandon saw her state and understood. He had hurt her deeply last time, causing her to love him but be unsure about their future.
Talking about it now wouldn’t help much. What he needed was to give her enough trust and security in the days to come.
Not insisting on calling the doctor, Brandon lay beside her, watching her still-red eyes.
Abigail, calming down, felt embarrassed by her earlier emotional outburst. She covered her face, not wanting him to see her. But he took the opportunity to hold her hand.
"Be good, get some sleep. The pain will lessen in a few days." Brandon’s own pain was intense; he knew Abigail’s was certainly worse.
"Okay." This time, Abigail didn’t argue. She obediently closed her eyes. She was truly exhausted and in pain—not just physically, but in her heart too.
Watching Abigail’s eyes close, Brandon sighed inwardly. Her face, once chubby and round like Teddy’s, was now slim and beautiful but gave him no joy.
He hadn’t lied. He preferred her healthy and plump over the current thin and beautiful look.
Sighing softly in his heart, Brandon held Abigail’s hand tight. He knew she had recovered some memories, but her body and mind needed a long time to fully heal.
But as long as she stayed by his side, he could wait however long it took.
