The woman in labor finally stopped crying when she heard Abigail’s words. But she was already on the brink of exhaustion.
Abigail glanced at the female doctor who stood by idly. "Perform an episiotomy on her."
The female doctor didn’t move.
Abigail’s face darkened. "Don’t make me say it a second time."
"You dare boss me around in my delivery room? If something goes wrong, can you take responsibility?" The female doctor was already annoyed with Abigail. Although she had initially been wary of the director’s orders, seeing only a group of students present now made her feel invincible, regardless of Abigail’s potential connections.
Abigail took a deep breath. The woman in labor was in so much pain, yet the female doctor insisted on arguing. Who would take responsibility if something went wrong?
"I’ll take responsibility."
"A greenhorn student like you thinks you can handle it?" The female doctor noticed the deteriorating condition of the woman in labor but didn’t want to be bullied by a student who hadn’t even graduated, so she asked coldly.
Abigail ignored her, put on gloves, took out the surgical kit, and started performing the episiotomy.
Everyone was stunned, especially Lena, who shouted, "Abigail, stop, don’t..."
If something happened, how could Abigail bear the responsibility?
Wilson was already petrified, Ralf stood in a daze, and Davis frowned, instructing a nurse to fetch the person who had first brought them in.
Sophie stood straight beside Abigail, clearing any obstacles for her.
The female doctor’s face turned white. "Are you crazy? Even with an episiotomy, she might not be able to deliver. I was going to use forceps..."
But Abigail didn’t even acknowledge her, directly administering anesthesia, then performing the episiotomy. She then looked at the increasingly pale woman on the delivery bed. "Do you trust me?"
Abigail’s voice wasn’t loud, but her determined and resolute gaze reassured the woman.
The woman barely had any strength left, but her instincts were swayed by Abigail’s emotions, and she nodded with difficulty.
"Alright, just like before. When I count to three during the contractions, push," Abigail said to the woman and then moved to her left side instead of the birth canal. She instructed Sophie, "You catch the baby."
As soon as she spoke, the woman started having contractions. Abigail immediately shouted, "One, two, three, push. One, two, three, push..."
Before anyone could grasp what was happening, Abigail suddenly pushed down with her elbow on the woman’s abdomen, and with a sudden thrust, the baby emerged.
Even the usually calm Sophie was stunned, holding the blood-covered baby with trembling hands and amniotic fluid splattered all over her.
Abigail stepped forward and slapped the baby’s butt, and soon the delivery room echoed with a loud cry.
"Wah wah wah..."
Hearing the baby’s cries, Lena and the others were dumbfounded.
It was their first time witnessing a childbirth, and they hadn’t anticipated it being so perilous. Nor had they imagined Abigail being so capable.
Looking at the baby bathed in blood, each of them felt an inner shock.
Even Davis, usually indifferent, felt a reverence for life for the first time, realizing the hardships of motherhood for the first time.
Everyone looked at Abigail with newfound respect.
The woman lying beside them, with tears streaming down her face, lost consciousness.
Sophie, covered in blood and standing beside the woman, urgently asked, "What should we do about the woman in labor?"
"It’s likely temporary fainting caused by low blood sugar and tension. Don’t worry. Press down on her lower abdomen to push the uterus back and avoid excessive bleeding," Abigail said, cleaning the baby and wrapping it in a small blanket before placing it under the blue light. She then began suturing.
The scene before them had already surpassed everyone’s understanding.
The female doctor who awaited Abigail’s failure watched in dumbfounded silence as Abigail performed a series of operations. Her gaze finally landed on the stitches, stunned. How could this look like a student’s work? Even she might not be able to suture so skillfully, and the speed of the girl’s work...
"You all come here," Abigail ignored the female doctor’s reaction and called the dazed group over. She then slowed down her stitching and started explaining how to suture.
The scene was gory, but for the first time, no one vomited or looked away. They listened quietly as Abigail explained while stitching.
When the nurse led the person in charge into the room, the woman had already awakened and urgently asked, "Where’s my baby? Where’s my baby?"
"Don’t worry. She’s right here. It’s a girl, very beautiful, weighing 3500 grams," Abigail approached and gently reassured the woman.
The tear-stained woman clasped Abigail’s hand excitedly. "Thank you, thank you..."
The corners of Abigail’s mouth curved slightly. She suddenly noticed her lower abdomen no longer hurt.
She froze for a moment and then understood. She had finally made peace with herself. Though her cesarean section wound had long since healed, the pain etched in her bones had never subsided.
The despair and pain of this woman resembled Abigail’s own from her time on the delivery bed. Whether in her past life or now, she had been waiting for redemption.
Unfortunately, it had never come. The childbirth scene remained like an indelible scar in her bones. Even though the wound healed, the pain in her heart persisted, ready to be triggered by the slightest reminder of labor pains.
But the successful delivery felt like a re-enactment, unknowingly smoothing out that scar.
Upon hearing the woman’s gratitude, Abigail softly responded with her own "Thank you."
The person in charge entered the room, seeing that everything was well, and questioned the female doctor, "What happened?"
"Director, even if these are interns you brought, they shouldn’t be messing around in the delivery room. If the woman wasn’t strong, her actions could have ended in two deaths," the female doctor said angrily.
The others immediately glared at the female doctor with anger.
The female doctor felt uncomfortable under their glares. "What? Did I say something wrong?"
The person in charge, feeling exasperated, looked at Abigail’s group. Though instructed by higher-ups to let them intern, he had only discovered they were sophomores upon arrival. Hearing the female doctor’s words, he couldn’t help but caution them, "This is a hospital, not a school. A minor mistake here can mean life and death. Please follow the rules."
He then glanced at the displeased female doctor. "You should apologize to Dr. House."
The group stared angrily at the female doctor, apologize to her?
Lena reacted the strongest. "Why should we apologize to her? If it wasn’t for Abigail, both the woman and baby would have been in great danger. I think she should be the one to apologize!"
"Yes!" Ralf chimed in.
Wilson also glared angrily at the female doctor. Davis frowned—how had he ended up with such a fool?
"Director, did you see that? Do they look like interns? They have no manners!" the female doctor sneered, staring at Abigail. "Apologize."
