Chapter 500: Chapter 500: Internship in the Maternity Ward of the Hospital

"Ugh..."

Despite their best efforts to control it, Lena Locke still couldn’t hold back and vomited. Soon, others in the classroom also rushed out to throw up one after another.

Abigail Green sat there with a blank expression, waiting for everyone to finish before resuming her explanation.

Wilson Jasper struggled with his discomfort. "Doesn’t this disgust you?"

"It does." Abigail still had no particular expression.

But after she spoke, no one could tell she was disgusted at all.

Seeing this, Abigail gave them a mysterious smile. "When you get to the hospital, you’ll know what real disgust is."

This sent an inexplicable chill down their spines.

Brandon Piers moved quickly. By Friday, he had arranged for their internship at a hospital.

Abigail would lead them.

When they arrived at the best hospital in Swallow City’s Piers International Hospital, everyone was stunned.

They looked at Abigail in disbelief.

Ralf was so excited that he rushed to grab Abigail’s wrist. "How did you manage this? How did you manage this?"

Abigail just smiled without saying anything.

Unexpectedly, Lena Locke watched Abigail for a moment before suddenly exclaiming, "Abigail, are you the legendary fiancée of Master Brandon? Last time I thought you looked like her. I heard Master Brandon’s fiancée is from Gills City, and you’re also from Gills City. Master Brandon’s fiancée’s last name is Green. Yours is too, but Master Brandon’s fiancée weighs 200 pounds. You..."

It didn’t match!

Lena scratched her head, feeling that something was off.

Then Davis Hudson interrupted, "What can you think with that little brain of yours? Hurry up. The supervisor is waiting for us."

"Yay!" Lena’s attention immediately shifted.

But Ralf, the preacher, looked at Piers International Hospital in Swallow City and then at Abigail. He nodded thoughtfully, just about to strike a preacher’s pose to make a calculation. But Sophie Hope accidentally kicked his foot, causing him to scream in pain.

Wilson Jasper grabbed his sleeve tightly, forbidding him from making any noise.

Ralf gritted his teeth and nodded, silently wondering if this woman’s feet were made of steel.

The group was led inside by a supervisor and assigned to different departments for their internship.

The first stop was the gynecology department.

The three male students were shocked. Why were they going to the gynecology department, and especially to the delivery room?

The supervisor apologetically explained, "At this time, other departments don’t have any surgeries."

"You’ll be doctors someday. Medicine doesn’t distinguish between genders. But if it did, you should see the hardships of childbirth." Abigail spoke calmly to the three of them.

The three male students looked up at Abigail in a daze. Although they felt she made sense, it still seemed odd.

But Abigail had already told the supervisor, "Lead the way."

Immediately, the supervisor politely led Abigail and the group to the delivery room.

After changing into sterile gowns, the five of them headed for the delivery room. They noticed Abigail not following and looked back at her.

Abigail pressed her lips together, gritting her teeth and nodding. "Let’s go."

But as they approached, they heard heartbreaking cries of pain.

Instinctively, their scalps tingled.

Abigail quietly clenched her fists, feeling as if the hideous scar on her lower abdomen had come alive and was aching.

She knew this was not physical pain, but a psychological reaction caused by past trauma.

"Isn’t there such a thing as painless childbirth?" Lena Locke asked weakly, covered in goosebumps.

"The woman has been given anesthesia, but due to a narrow birth canal, the baby’s large size, or a situation like a nuchal cord, the labor is progressing slowly, and her body has developed a tolerance to the anesthesia," Abigail watched the woman in labor as she spoke.

Although the others studying medicine knew a bit about such cases, witnessing it firsthand was entirely different.

The cries of pain continued, causing their nerves to tighten.

The supervising doctor led them in. Three women were in labor, with five more waiting. A curtain separated them, and the women, in the throes of pain, didn’t even glance at the group as they either cried out in agony or struggled with effort.

Some felt a bit scared, but Abigail’s eyes fell on one particular woman. "How long has she been in labor?"

"Ten hours." The obstetrics staff, having been briefed by their superiors, maintained politeness towards Abigail and her group.

Abigail frowned. "Why haven’t you assisted her with delivery yet?"

"The woman consumed too much calcium during pregnancy, making the baby’s head too hard. It hasn’t reached the state suitable for delivery yet," the woman doctor responsible for her answered nonchalantly.

"So, you just let her labor on like this?" Abigail’s voice was already sharp.

"Well..." The woman doctor, though briefed, felt discontent. They were still just students, sophomores, even. It was fortunate enough they got to intern, yet here they were, acting arrogant.

"If this continues, her blood sugar will drop. The baby could be in danger." Abigail, unfazed by the doctor’s hesitation, took a big stride forward. "Don’t worry. Have your contractions started? If so, nod. When I count to three, push with the rhythm. Can you do that?"

The woman’s face was pale, clearly exhausted, but Abigail’s words temporarily cleared her mind, and she nodded weakly.

The woman doctor was a bit annoyed. "She’s been in labor for half the day, but hasn’t pushed. Shouting like this won’t make much difference."

Years in the delivery room had numbed the woman doctor, causing her to forget her original purpose.

Abigail continued to gently encourage the woman, "Believe in yourself. The harder you push, the more time you’ll save for your baby. You’ve endured these ten months for this moment, right?"

The woman nodded, tears streaming down her face.

"Come on, are you ready? Good. Let’s start pushing. One, two, three, push. One, two, three, push..." Abigail cheered the woman on.

The woman doctor, not expecting Abigail to be so persistent, stepped aside to watch, wanting to see how much this sophomore medical student could accomplish.

The others hadn’t anticipated Abigail getting involved, staring at her in a daze.

The other doctors wanted to help, but with their patients also in labor, they couldn’t spare any hands.

"One, two, three, push. Good, rest for a moment."

"Come on, let’s continue..."

Sweat poured from the woman’s forehead like water droplets. Midway, she vomited a few times. Abigail directly instructed Sophie Hope to pass tissues to her.

Twenty minutes passed. Abigail checked the woman’s birth canal and frowned.

The woman doctor smirked. "I told you she wasn’t ready yet. We need to wait a bit longer."

Hearing this, the woman on the bed almost broke down again, crying softly, "I don’t want to do this anymore. Can we have a C-section, please? I feel like I’m dying."

Abigail gave the woman doctor a cold look. Watching the baby, who reached the birth canal with each push but retreated after every pause, she asked, "Calm down. The baby is already in the birth canal. A C-section isn’t an option. Have you ever had a pelvic injury?"

The distressed woman, tears streaming down her face, shook her head. "I don’t know. I don’t know..."

"Don’t worry. The baby will be out soon," Abigail said with certainty, but the pain in her abdomen grew stronger.

The woman doctor frowned, a cold smile in her eyes. She’d been an obstetrician for years and never dared to say such a thing.

Given the situation, it seemed they would need forceps.
