Reborn As Mr. Coldwell's Wife -
Chapter 168: When Things Get Heated
Chapter 168: When Things Get Heated
Ellen could see the way Aubrey’s face twisted, her emotions clear as day—anger, stubbornness, and something else underneath it all.
She was shocked at how much she once supported and really felt for this woman.
Aubrey then took a slow breath, her gaze sharp as she spoke. "You sure have a lot of confidence in Gerald’s parents, don’t you?"
Ellen didn’t flinch, keeping her eyes on Aubrey. She tilted her head slightly, her lips curving into a smirk. "Yeah, I do," she replied without hesitation. She shifted in her seat, her arms still crossed over her chest, clearly standing her ground. "And why shouldn’t I? They’re good people who want what’s best for their son. And that doesn’t include you dragging him into this mess."
Aubrey’s eyes flashed, her fists clenching on her lap. "You have no idea what you’re talking about," she snapped, her voice shaking slightly. She leaned forward, her body tense, her face flushed with anger. "Gerald is helping me because he wants to. Because he cares. And because he knows what’s best for Mason."
Ellen let out a short laugh. "And you think I don’t know what’s best for Mason?" she asked, her voice rising, her anger getting the best of her. She leaned forward too, her face inches away from Aubrey’s, her eyes blazing. "You think you’re the only one who cares about him?"
Aubrey opened her mouth to speak, but Ellen didn’t give her the chance. She stood up abruptly, her movements sharp and jerky, her eyes still locked on Aubrey’s. "You know what?" she said, her voice cold. "If you have nothing else to talk about, then maybe you should leave. I’m tired, and I need to rest."
Aubrey’s eyes widened in disbelief, her face going pale for a moment before flushing with anger. She looked up at Ellen, her mouth opening and closing as if she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. "Is this how you treat a guest?" she finally managed to say, her voice trembling with fury.
Ellen’s eyes narrowed, her lips curling into a smirk. "You’re not my guest, Aubrey," she said, her voice dripping with disdain. She took a step back, making it obvious she wanted Aubrey to go. "So, get out."
For a moment, Aubrey just stared at her, her eyes wide with shock and anger. Then, slowly, she stood up, her body tense and her movements a bit awkward. She looked at Ellen, disbelief written all over her face, her lips pressing into a thin line. "You dare to treat me like this?"
Ellen didn’t back down. She took a step closer, her eyes locked on Aubrey’s. "Why wouldn’t I?" she asked, her tone challenging. "This is my house. And I won’t have you coming here, acting like you own the place."
They stood there, facing each other, their bodies tense, their faces inches apart. Ellen could feel her heart pounding in her chest, her emotions swirling inside her—anger, frustration, and a hint of satisfaction at seeing Aubrey’s reaction. She could see the way Aubrey’s eyes blazed, the way her hands clenched at her sides, the way her chest rose and fell with each heavy breath.
Aubrey’s gaze didn’t waver. She stood her ground, her eyes locked on Ellen’s, her lips curving into a bitter smile. "You think you can just push me away from here?" she asked. "You think you can just make me leave?"
"Yes, Aubrey" she replied simply. "I can."
For a moment, neither of them moved, neither of them spoke. Ellen could feel the heat of Aubrey’s anger, could see it in the way her eyes flashed, in the way her body tensed. And she could feel her anger creeping in, quietly bubbling away, just waiting to spill out.
How could she not be upset when all she wanted was a nice, quiet night at home, but Aubrey decided to start yet another dumb argument?
Ugh, she really needed to remind Mason to add an electric gate.
Aubrey let out a short, bitter laugh, her eyes never leaving Ellen’s. "You’re unbelievable." She shook her head. "You think you’re better than me. You think you’re the only one who deserves to be with Mason."
"I never said that," she said, her voice trembling slightly, her anger getting the best of her. "But I’m not going to just stand by and let you take him away from me."
Aubrey’s eyes widened, her lips parting in surprise. For a moment, she looked almost vulnerable, almost unsure. But then her expression hardened. "I’m not giving up, Ellen," she warned her. "I won’t stop fighting for him."
She wanted to scream at Aubrey, to tell her to leave, to never come back. But instead, she took a deep breath, trying to steady herself, trying to keep her emotions in check.
"You really need to leave," Ellen said finally. "I’m done with this conversation. I’ve had enough of your nonsense."
Aubrey opened her mouth to argue, but Ellen shook her head, her eyes flashing with a warning. "I said, leave. Or I’ll call security, and they’ll toss you out on the street. Just go now and save yourself the embarrassment."
The silence in the room was almost deafening, thick and heavy. Just as Aubrey seemed ready to say something, they both heard the distinct sound of someone clearing his throat. The sudden noise broke the tension, both women turning their heads sharply towards the doorway. There he was, just chilling in the doorway, leaning back against the frame.
"Mason...?" Ellen called. Was this all in her head since she missed him like crazy, or was he actually there? But Aubrey was staring at him too, so he must be real.
His face was hard to read, and he looked from Ellen to Aubrey, his eyebrows slightly raised as if he had just walked into something he wasn’t supposed to see. He could see their red faces and tight postures, and the quiet pretty much said it all.
"What happened here?"
