Reborn As Mr. Coldwell's Wife -
Chapter 167: The Unwelcome Chat
Chapter 167: The Unwelcome Chat
Ellen was lost in thought as she packed her belongings, a warm smile on her face. Mason would be back tomorrow, and she wanted to be there to welcome him. She had made up her mind to go home a day earlier just for that.
Colleen had insisted on driving her home, despite her own classes. After a short drive, they arrived in front of the house. Ellen hugged Colleen goodbye, promising to call her later, and then stepped out.
She had barely made it past the gate when she heard someone call her name.
"Ellen!"
Her body tensed at the familiar voice, and she turned around, her mood instantly souring as she saw Aubrey standing there. The last person she wanted to see today. Ellen instinctively sped up, hoping to avoid her. She just wasn’t in the mood to deal with Aubrey’s schemes today.
"Ellen, wait!" Aubrey called, her voice louder. The gate was still partially open, and Aubrey took that chance to slip inside.
Ellen ignored her, keeping her eyes forward. She could hear Aubrey’s footsteps coming closer, and out of pure impulse, she picked up her pace.
Why am I avoiding her like this? It wasn’t like her to run away, but something about today made her want to avoid any confrontation.
The security guard stationed at the gate stepped forward to block Aubrey, but she dodged him, moving swiftly. Ellen could hear the guard calling after her, but Aubrey was quick.
Before Ellen knew it, she was jogging, trying to get inside before Aubrey could catch her. But Aubrey was persistent, and soon enough, she managed to catch up, moving in front of Ellen and blocking her path. Ellen came to a sudden stop, her heart racing with frustration.
"Where are you running off to?" Aubrey asked, slightly out of breath, her eyes locking onto Ellen’s.
Ellen glared at her, her lips pressing into a thin line. "I’m just trying to get inside my house," she shot back. "What are you doing here?"
Aubrey’s gaze didn’t falter, and she took a step closer. "I need to talk to you."
"Oh, really? I thought you came here to see Mason."
Aubrey’s expression hardened, but she quickly forced a smile. "I know Mason’s not here."
The security guard approached them, looking concerned. "Mrs. Coldwell, is everything alright?" he asked, glancing warily at Aubrey.
Ellen gave a sigh, waving her hand dismissively. "It’s fine, she’s leaving," she said, though she knew it wasn’t true.
The guard looked hesitant but nodded, heading back to his post. Aubrey, however, stood her ground, her eyes focused on Ellen.
"Alright, let’s get this over with," Ellen muttered, turning and walking towards the house. She could hear Aubrey following behind her.
Once inside, Ellen led Aubrey to the living room, her irritation growing as she watched Aubrey make herself comfortable without even waiting for an invitation. Ellen crossed her arms, standing instead of sitting, she shot a glare at her unwanted guest.
"Tch," Ellen sneered, her eyes cold. "What do you want, Aubrey?"
Aubrey looked up for a second, her eyes meeting Ellen’s with a touch of annoyance before went back to inspect her nails. She shrugged slightly. "I already told you," she answered. "I want to talk. You better sit down for this."
Ellen’s jaw tightened, her eyes flashing with anger. She hated how casually Aubrey spoke, as if she had any right to tell her what to do in her own house. She stared at her for a moment, her mind debating whether to just walk away and leave Aubrey sitting there by herself. But after a moment, Ellen moved towards the armchair across from Aubrey, lowering herself into it slowly, her posture was straight, and she seemed a bit tense.
She wanted to make it clear—she wasn’t sitting because Aubrey had told her to. She was sitting because she decided to.
"Alright, I’m sitting now," Ellen said. She raised an eyebrow, her eyes were locked on Aubrey. "So, talk. What do you want? To discuss how you plan to snatch Mason from me? Or is there some other exciting topic you’d like to bring up?"
Aubrey looked up at Ellen, her expression changing. The laid-back attitude was gone, replaced by a seriousness that didn’t catch Ellen off guard. Aubrey’s eyes narrowed slightly, her lips pressing into a thin line as she leaned forward a little, no longer playing with her nails.
"Why did you involve Gerald’s parents in this?" Aubrey asked.
Ellen’s eyes widened slightly at the unexpected question, but she quickly masked her surprise, a smirk tugging at her lips. "Oh," she said, her tone mocking. "So Gerald came running to you, whining about it, did he?" She leaned back in her seat, crossing her legs and tilting her head to the side, her eyes sparkled with a mix of amusement and challenge. "How adorable."
Aubrey’s eyes flashed with anger, her hands clenching into fists on her lap. "This isn’t a joke, Ellen," she said, her voice sharp. "You had no right to drag his parents into our situation. This is between us—between you, me, and Mason. Leave Gerald’s family out of it."
Ellen let out a short laugh, shaking her head. "Oh, please," she said, rolling her eyes. "You can ask for Gerald’s help whenever you need it. He’s always there, doing whatever you want, trying to help you win Mason over. But the moment I decide to ask someone else for help to stop you two, it’s suddenly a problem?" She leaned forward, her eyes locking onto Aubrey’s, her voice filled with disgust. "Don’t be a hypocrite, Aubrey."
Aubrey’s face flushed, her eyes narrowing as she glared at Ellen. "You-"
"They deserve to know what their son is getting involved in—what kind of mess you’re dragging him into." Ellen cut her off.
Aubrey opened her mouth to argue, but no words came out. Instead, she clenched her jaw, her eyes blazing with frustration. For a moment, they were silent, the tension hanging between them. Ellen simply smiled, knowing her point was valid, and Aubrey understood that too.
