Reborn As Mr. Coldwell's Wife -
Chapter 154: In Safe Hands
Chapter 154: In Safe Hands
Mason’s car pulled into the long driveway, the familiar surroundings of his father-in-law’s house coming into view. Ellen found herself staring at the large house as they neared the entrance. She shifted in her seat, her eyes narrowing slightly as she turned her head to look at Mason.
"You really didn’t have to drop me off here, Mason," she said. "I was perfectly fine staying at home."
Mason glanced at her, a small smirk curling at the corner of his lips. He didn’t seem fazed by her complaints, and there was a hint of playfulness in his eyes as he pulled the car to a stop. He put the car in park, then took a better look at her.
"Don’t lie, Ellen," he said. "I know you like it here. Besides, this way I’ll have peace of mind while I’m away."
Ellen opened her mouth to argue, but then closed it, letting out a sigh instead. She looked away from him, her fingers toying with the edge of her shirt. She didn’t dislike staying at her father’s place, but she didn’t want Mason to think he could just decide for her.
"Fine, you win," she muttered, unbuckling her seatbelt.
Mason smiled, the corners of his eyes crinkling in amusement as he unbuckled his seatbelt as well. They walked together towards the front entrance of the house. The door opened before they reached it, revealing Ronald and Colleen standing in the doorway. Ronald’s face lit up with a welcoming smile as he saw them, while Colleen stood beside him.
"Ellen, Mason!" Ronald greeted, stepping forward. He pulled Ellen into a brief hug before turning to Mason. "Good to see you both."
"Mr. Winters," Mason said, giving Ronald a respectful nod, though his formal tone earned a quick response from Ronald.
"Come on, Mason," Ronald said, waving his hand dismissively, "You can call me Ronald now. No need for all the formalities."
Mason smiled, a small chuckle escaping his lips as he nodded. "Alright then, Ronald," he said, his voice more relaxed now. He turned slightly to glance at Ellen, then looked back at Ronald. "Like I mentioned on the phone the other day, I was hoping Ellen could stay here while I’m in Dubai. It would make me feel better knowing she’s here."
Ronald gave a firm nod, his smile widening as he placed a hand on Mason’s shoulder. "Of course, Mason. She’s always welcome here, you know that," he said. "We’re happy to have her."
Ellen felt her heart soften at her father’s words, though she tried to keep her expression neutral. She crossed her arms over her chest, looking between Mason and Ronald with a small sigh. "I still don’t see why this is necessary," she said. "I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself, you know."
Colleen, who had been quietly watching, finally spoke up, her voice teasing as she looked at Ellen. "We know you are, but I like having you here," she said, stepping forward to hug her older sister. "It’s not every day I get to have my big sister around."
Ellen looked at her younger sister, her expression softening despite herself as she returned the hug. "Alright, alright," she said, a small smile tugging at her lips. "We can spend time together like before."
Mason’s smile widened, a look of relief washing over his face. He stepped closer to Ellen, his hand brushing against her arm briefly, his touch warm. "Thank you," he said softly, his voice filled with sincerity. "It’ll make things easier for me while I’m away."
Ellen met his gaze, her annoyance fading as she saw the genuine concern in his eyes. She nodded, her lips curving into a faint smile. "Just make sure you don’t stay away too long," she replied.
Mason’s eyes softened, and he nodded, his hand giving her arm a gentle squeeze before he let go. "I won’t," he promised. He turned to Ronald and Colleen, giving them a polite smile. "I really appreciate this."
Ronald waved his hand again, a wide grin on his face. "It’s no trouble at all, Mason. You just take care of things in Dubai, and we’ll take care of Ellen."
Mason nodded, then looked back at Ellen, his gaze lingering on her for a moment before he finally stepped back. "I should get going," he said. "I have a flight to catch."
Ellen swallowed, her eyes meeting his as she nodded. "Safe travels," she said, her voice a little softer now, her emotions showing through despite her best efforts.
Mason smiled, his eyes filled with warmth as he looked at her. He gave her one last look, then turned and headed back to his car, his footsteps steady.
Ellen watched as he got into the car, her heart feeling strangely heavy as she watched him start the engine. She raised a hand, giving him a small wave, which he returned with a small smile before driving off, the car disappearing down the long driveway.
Unbeknownst to them, a dark sedan was parked a short distance away, just beyond the line of tall bushes that bordered the property. The car’s windows were tinted, obscuring the person sitting inside from view. The driver, a man with sharp features and watchful eyes, watched the entire scene unfold, his gaze fixed intently on Mason and Ellen.
His fingers drummed lightly on the steering wheel, his eyes narrowing as he observed the interaction between them. He had been waiting for the right moment, and now, it seemed, it had finally arrived.
As Mason’s car turned a corner and vanished from sight, the man in the sedan allowed a small, knowing smile to play at the corner of his lips. He watched Ellen for a moment longer as she disappeared into the house with her family. Then, he leaned back in his seat, exhaling slowly, as if he had just made an important decision.
"This is it," he muttered to himself. "It’s time."
Without another glance toward the house, the man put the car in gear. The engine purred softly, and the car moved away from its hidden spot, gliding silently down the road in the opposite direction.
