Chapter 109: Make It Happen

Chapter 109: Make It Happen

Ellen slammed the book shut, the loud thud echoing through the living room. She tossed it onto the table in front of her, leaning back into the couch with a deep sigh, her arms crossing tightly over her chest. The frustration bubbling inside her was almost palpable as her brow furrowed and her lips pressed into a tight line.

She had really hoped that reading would take her mind off things. After all, getting lost in a good novel used to be her escape. But ever since ending up in this new reality, things had been different. She had thought, naively, that picking up a traditional paperback—since there were no online novels here—would bring her the same joy. It was a simple story she had chosen, nothing too complex, just a light romance. Yet, as she stared at the book lying closed on the table, she realized how wrong she had been.

Her hands clenched into fists on her lap as she thought about the ending. The typical male lead and female lead ending up together, while the supporting characters were cast aside, left to wallow in their loneliness. Ellen bit the inside of her cheek, trying to swallow the bitterness rising in her throat. Why did it bother her so much this time? She had read hundreds of stories like this before, each with the same predictable outcome. She was used to these tropes, these clichés.

But today, it stung.

Ellen shifted in her seat, hugging her knees to her chest as she stared at the book, her thoughts swirling. "Why does it bother me so much?" she muttered to herself, her voice low and tight with frustration. "It’s just a story... I should’ve seen it coming."

She ran a hand through her hair, her fingers curling tightly around the strands as she tried to make sense of her emotions. Was it because of her own situation? The male lead, the female lead, and the one left on the sidelines. Her mind immediately went to Mason and Aubrey, the story that seemed to be playing out right before her eyes.

Ellen let out a bitter laugh, shaking her head. "Ha... Aubrey won’t end up with Mason like she’s supposed to in the original story, right?" She said it aloud, but the doubt lingered in her voice.

In the book she had just finished, the female lead had gotten her happy ending. Meanwhile, the side character, who had been silently in love with the male lead, was left with nothing. It felt unfair—just like how things felt now. Ellen could almost hear Gerald’s voice from the other day, the way he had talked about Aubrey, how she had "sacrificed" for Mason. Was she supposed to feel guilty? Was she the one getting in the way of Aubrey’s happiness?

Ellen gritted her teeth. No. She wouldn’t let herself fall into that trap. She wasn’t responsible for Aubrey’s feelings. Mason had made his choice, and Ellen was his wife now. She wasn’t about to let herself be cast aside like some forgotten character in a novel.

"Why am I getting so worked up?" Ellen asked herself, her voice breaking through the quiet room. "It’s not like I’m going to let things end that way."

But still, the parallels between the novel’s ending and her reality gnawed at her. Aubrey wasn’t some tragic, misunderstood heroine, and Ellen wasn’t going to play the role of the obstacle in her way. She wasn’t a passive character in this story, and she refused to let herself be written off.

Her thoughts drifted back to that moment. The kiss. It was brief, almost fleeting, yet it had stirred something deep inside her. It had been just the other night, and she could still feel the warmth of Mason’s lips against hers, the way his touch had lingered a second too long, as if he was just as unsure as she was. It wasn’t just a casual peck; there was something in it, something that made her question everything.

But then she shook her head, pushing the thoughts away. "No," she muttered under her breath, pacing across the living room. "It was nothing. It doesn’t mean anything... yet." She had to remind herself that it wasn’t real—not fully, at least. Mason hadn’t shown any signs that he wanted more, and they were still feeling their way through this strange marriage. If she didn’t step up and take action, then they would remain in this stagnant space, and who knows if that might give Aubrey a chance?

She wasn’t going to wait around for something to happen. She needed to make it happen. Grabbing the book she had just been reading, she held it firmly in her hand as if it gave her strength. Her eyes narrowed toward the hallway that led to Mason’s home office.

"Tck," she muttered with a roll of her eyes, "even on a Sunday, he’s locked up in there." The man never took a break. They hardly spent any time together outside of their brief conversations or awkward dinners. It was driving her mad, this distance between them. But not today. No, today they were going to spend time together, whether he liked it or not.

With the book still in hand, Ellen marched down the hallway. She could feel her heart beating faster with every step, her determination growing with each second. It was now or never. She didn’t want to be stuck in the role of the passive wife who waited in the background, who watched her husband drift further away.

As if fate had finally decided to give her a break, when she reached Mason’s office door, it swung open. Mason stood there, his expression one of mild surprise as he blinked at her, clearly not expecting to see her standing outside his office.

His brows furrowed slightly, and he opened his mouth to speak. "Ellen—" But before he could ask what she was doing, Ellen’s excitement bubbled over, cutting him off mid-sentence.

She blurted out, her voice full of energy, "Let’s go on a date!"
