Chapter 108: Change Of Plan
Ellen’s heart raced at Mason’s question, his boldness totally caught her off guard. Her cheeks flushed a deep shade of pink as she quickly shifted away from him, creating a small gap between their bodies. She pressed herself into the corner of the chair, her mind racing as she tried to process what had just happened.
Her usual composure faltered as she stammered, trying to find the right words. "I-I don’t... I mean... what are you even..." Her voice trailed off, her embarrassment growing as she turned her face away, avoiding his gaze. She could feel the heat rising in her cheeks, her flustered state making it impossible to think clearly. The realization that Mason was teasing her only made her grumpier, her lips pressing into a pout.
Mason, noticing her reaction, let out a soft chuckle. He cleared his throat, changing the topic to something more relaxed. "Gerald just called."
Ellen glanced back at him, her curiosity piqued despite her lingering embarrassment. "Oh? What did he say?"
"He just informed me that he and Aubrey won’t be able to make it to dinner tomorrow," Mason explained, his tone casual.
Ellen nodded slowly, taking in the news. "Really? Why all of a sudden?"
Mason shrugged slightly. "Aubrey has a photoshoot, and Gerald was called away on a sudden business trip."
Ellen only nodded again, not pressing further. In truth, she wasn’t disappointed by the change of plans. If anything, she felt a small wave of relief wash over her. The idea of sitting across from Gerald so soon after their tense exchange today was anything but appealing. And as for Aubrey, Ellen couldn’t help but feel that her absence might make the evening a bit more peaceful. She doubted Aubrey would have come alone if Gerald wasn’t there to accompany her, anyway.
The news that Gerald and Aubrey wouldn’t be coming to dinner tomorrow was convenient—almost too convenient. The more she thought about it, the more it didn’t sit right with her.
Why did it feel like Gerald was lying?
The timing was just too perfect. After everything that had happened between them today, it seemed like more than just a coincidence that Gerald suddenly had to leave town, and Aubrey had a photoshoot scheduled. Ellen couldn’t shake the feeling that Gerald was avoiding her just as much as she wanted to avoid him. Perhaps he was just as uncomfortable with the idea of facing her after the harsh words they’d exchanged.
It didn’t really matter, she told herself. Whether Gerald was lying or telling the truth, the result was the same—they wouldn’t have to sit across from each other at dinner tomorrow, and that was something she was more than happy to accept.
The thought of Gerald again made Ellen inwardly cringe. The audacity he’d shown earlier was still fresh in her mind, and the idea of having to face him again so soon was not something she looked forward to. She was grateful for the unexpected reprieve.
As she sat there, Ellen made a decision. She would keep her meeting with Gerald today a secret from Mason. She wasn’t the kind of wife to run to her husband with every little complaint, especially when it was something she felt she could handle on her own. She didn’t want to burden Mason with unnecessary drama, especially when she was more than capable of taking care of it herself.
Mason watched her closely, his gaze lingering on her as if he could sense that something was on her mind. But he didn’t press her for details, respecting her silence. Instead, he leaned back slightly, relaxing into the bench as the evening breeze ruffled his hair.
Ellen finally turned her gaze back to Mason, her earlier embarrassment slowly fading. She studied him for a moment, seeing how the house’s warm light showed off his features. There was a calmness about him that she found comforting, even in moments like this when her emotions were all over the place.
Mason must have felt her gaze because he turned slightly toward her, a small, curious smile playing on his lips. He reached out, his hand brushing against hers as he picked up the book she had been holding. Ellen watched him as he looked down at the cover, his eyebrows raising just a fraction.
"What are you reading?" he asked, his voice casual as he turned the book over in his hands, examining it.
Ellen glanced at the cover, then back at Mason, a faint blush creeping up her neck. "Just a romance novel," she answered, trying to sound nonchalant.
Mason’s lips twitched into a knowing smirk as he turned the book back around to look at the cover again. "Why am I not surprised that you’d be into these kinds of things?" he remarked, his tone teasing.
Ellen narrowed her eyes playfully, trying to figure out what he really meant. "What do you mean by that?" she asked, leaning in just slightly, her curiosity piqued.
Mason’s gaze flicked up to meet hers, a glint of something unreadable in his eyes. He seemed to hesitate for just a moment, the smile lingering on his lips as if he was debating whether to continue. His thumb traced the edge of the book, the small motion drawing Ellen’s attention back to his hands, then up to his face.
Ellen found herself studying him closely, her eyes tracing the curve of his jaw, the way his brows furrowed slightly in concentration, and the soft, tiny rise and fall of his chest as he took in air.
Without even realizing it, she leaned in just a little closer, her gaze locking onto his. There was something so intense about the way Mason was looking at her, as if he were searching for something, trying to find the right words. Suddenly, the words slipped out of her mouth, her voice soft, almost innocent in its delivery. "Mason... your face is kind of red."
Mason froze, the playful smile on his lips faltering for just a second. His eyes widened slightly, and for a brief moment, he looked almost caught off guard.
Mason suddenly lifted the book he had been holding and placed it right in front of her face, the action abrupt and almost clumsy. The cover of the book was all she could see now.
"Your face... it’s too close," Mason mumbled, sounding unusually nervous.
It took a few seconds for her to process what had just happened. Slowly, she reached up and touched the book, gently lowering it from her face as she blinked. Without waiting for a response, he got up and left.
"What was that all about?"
