Chapter 303 - Chapter 303 Chapter 304 Sheltering Lin Shuangqiao

Chapter 303: Chapter 304: Sheltering Lin Shuangqiao Chapter 303: Chapter 304: Sheltering Lin Shuangqiao The next morning, as Shao He was about to enter the imperial palace for The Emperor’s follow-up medical examination, Pei Huaian’s carriage was already waiting outside the door.

“Won’t this be too ostentatious?”

“It won’t be. I have matters to attend to in the palace anyway, so I might as well take you with me.” Pei Huaian’s reasoning was sound, leaving Shao He without a rebuttal.

Shao He could only helplessly nod and board the carriage.

After examining The Emperor’s pulse, Shao He confirmed that His body was no longer in any serious trouble, and he need not continue taking medication.

Upon leaving, she was once again summoned by the Empress to the Imperial Garden.

“I have seen the Empress.” Shao He did not wish to stay with her any longer than necessary, preferring to stay as far away as possible from such a ruthless and scheming person.

“How is The Emperor?”

“Reporting to the Empress, The Emperor’s condition is no longer serious, and he no longer needs medication or acupuncture treatment. The treatment can now be concluded.” Shao He answered with her head bowed from a distance.

“Your medical skills are indeed superb, but they would be useless if you followed the wrong person,” the Empress said, looking at him with a smile yet not smiling, her gaze carrying a hint of warning.

“This humble official is aware of his lowly skills and dares not follow anyone,” Shao He answered calmly.

“You are quite clever indeed,” the Empress snorted coldly, and then waved her hand, signaling him to leave.

Shao He bowed and turned to walk out of Fengyi Hall.

Although the conversation was brief, she could discern the Empress’s warning; it seemed she would have to be even more cautious in the future.

After leaving the imperial palace, she went to Anji Hall, which she had limited time to visit due to her recent medical appointments with The Emperor.

Zhao Yuebei hurried over to greet her, speaking anxiously, “The woman who had brought her child for a consultation a few days ago came looking for you, but unfortunately, you weren’t here.”

“Could something have happened to the child?”

Shao He felt that shouldn’t be the case; the child had a genetic illness but was otherwise healthy, and although he might cry at night, it shouldn’t last too long.

“The child indeed had an accident. It was said that his grandmother accidentally killed him, but the exact circumstances are unclear.”

“Doctor Shao.”

As the two spoke, a faint voice suddenly came from behind them.

The two stopped and turned around, looking back to see a familiar yet shockingly changed person staring at her.

The person who had been glamorous just a few days ago was now extremely haggard, and her appearance had drastically changed, making her seem as if she had aged a decade in an instant.

Lin Shuangqiao knelt before Shao He with a thud, “Doctor Shao, please save me.”

Her action immediately drew side glances from those around, everyone curious about the circumstances.

Shao He quickly reached out to pull her up, “Let’s talk about it in the backyard.”

Thus, Lin Shuangqiao followed Shao He to the backyard, with Zhao Yuebei thoughtfully pouring a cup of tea for her.

“What exactly happened? Why have you become like this?” The moment Shao He saw her, she could hardly believe it.

The girl’s face was sallow, her lips were dry, her hair was brittle, and her body was emaciated, nothing like how she had first appeared. Were it not for those familiar eyes, she would have thought she was mistaken!

Lin Shuangqiao hung her head low, “The child was killed by his grandmother, who then falsely accused me of the murder. I’ve been constantly abused every day, and eventually my mother-in-law drove me out.”

Shao He furrowed her brows slightly, “Have you reported this to the authorities?”

Lin Shuangqiao looked up at Shao He with a face full of sorrow, “The officials ruled the child’s death as an accidental fall.”

“Is that why she drove you out?” Shao He continued her inquiry.

Lin Shuangqiao nodded solemnly, her expression somber, “I tried to find work, but my mother-in-law thwarted me every time, even going so far as to accuse me of killing the child, which scared off any potential employers. So…”

Although she didn’t finish her sentence, Shao He understood; this was why she had no choice but to come here.

Lin Shuangqiao knelt again, pleading, “Doctor Shao, I know you are kind-hearted. Please take me in. I know some pharmacology, and I’m hardworking. I can help with tasks and don’t need a salary — just a single meal would suffice.”

Shao He thought about how it would indeed be beneficial to have another woman to assist during surgeries, especially since Zhao Yuebei wasn’t suitable for helping with surgical procedures and it could be hectic managing alone.

“I can’t decide on my own, but I can discuss it with the owner here.”

After all, Shao He was merely the physician here and not the owner of the clinic; she needed to consult Yun Qian before making a decision.

“Thank you, Doctor Shao, thank you so much.”

Just then, Yun Qian came in from outside, pausing briefly when he saw them, then approached and asked, “What’s going on?”

“There’s something I wanted to discuss with you,” Shao He said, glancing towards Lin Shuangqiao who was sitting head bowed, clutching her tea cup.

Yun Qian nodded, “What is it?”

“This woman has been driven out by her mother-in-law and wants to stay here in return for meals. She could assist me during surgeries. What do you think?”

“That’s fine, no problem. She should still be paid what she deserves. There’s a room available. Have it cleaned up for her to stay in,” Yun Qian agreed, nodding his approval.

Sitting nervously on the chair, Lin Shuangqiao stood up excitedly to thank Yun Qian, “Thank you, thank you.”
