Chapter 279: Chapter 280: Hereditary Disease Chapter 279: Chapter 280: Hereditary Disease Several masked black-clad figures glanced indifferently at him before quickly turning and leaving the alley.
Pei Jingyi, limping, made his way out of the alley, and the guard hurriedly caught up.
“Fourth Prince, are you alright?”
“Get lost!”
Enraged, Pei Jingyi violently kicked him in the chest, “Hurry up and find out who these people are for me!”
“Yes, I’m on it immediately.”
The next day, a woman holding a three-year-old child, accompanied by a lavishly dressed lady, arrived at Anji Hall.
Zhao Yuebei approached them with a smile and asked, “May I ask what discomforts you both are experiencing?”
The lady looked at him coldly and asked disdainfully, “Where is Doctor Shao? We are here to see Doctor Shao.”
“Doctor Shao hasn’t arrived yet. Please take a seat here and wait for a moment,” Zhao Yuebei courteously led them to a table and instructed the servant boy behind him to brew them a pot of tea.
About the time it takes to burn an incense stick later, the child suddenly began to cry incessantly, prompting the lady to immediately scold, “Can’t you even look after the child properly? Why is he crying again?”
“Granny, the child is feeling unwell,” the woman patiently responded.
Observing them, Zhao Yuebei deduced their relationship. It turned out the woman’s name was Lin Shuangqiao, and the opulently dressed lady was her mother-in-law, Madam Yue.
Hearing her retort, Madam Yue, even more displeased, said, “I’m just reproaching you a bit. What do you have to be dissatisfied with?”
Lin Shuangqiao looked at her domineering mother-in-law and ultimately chose to hold her tongue.
Zhao Yuebei, seeing someone enter, hurriedly went to greet them, “Doctor Shao, inside are patients yet to be seen. The mother-in-law is somewhat troublesome, be careful.”
Shao He raised an eyebrow. She had encountered many arrogant and nitpicking relatives of patients and was accustomed to it.
She walked straight towards the two women, looked at the spirited Madam Yue, and then at the weary Lin Shuangqiao, finally resting her gaze on the three-year-old child.
Without asking further, she immediately began examining the child, eventually finding that the child had hemophilia, a genetic disorder linked to the Y chromosome, typically inherited by males.
“This child has a congenital disease, likely inherited. Even with treatment, he cannot be fully restored and may only live to about twenty years old.”
Shao He withdrew her hands and said composedly that though such diseases are rare, this was her first encounter with one here.
After she spoke, Lin Shuangqiao and Madam Yue’s expressions turned very strange.
Lin Shuangqiao, frowning, said, “My husband had the same disease, but he was infertile. This child was adopted from outside, and my husband has been deceased for many years.”
Lin Shuangqiao didn’t spell it out directly, but the implication was clear. If the disease was indeed genetic, why would it bear such resemblance to her deceased husband?
The fact that the child was adopted also made her very uneasy.
At this moment, as the hour continued, the queue of people waiting for medical attention grew longer, and many eyes fell upon the three of them.
Madam Yue had a strong mentality. Despite the situation, she still explained, “This child is adopted from within the family.”
She said this to dispel Lin Shuangqiao’s doubts and worries.
Shao He realized there was something concealed in her words but didn’t mind. It wasn’t appropriate to pry too much into a patient’s affairs; merely treating them was enough.
“This is a genetic disease, inherited by males only, and likely all the males in your family have this condition.”
As soon as Shao He had finished speaking, Lin Shuangqiao’s expression turned even more distressed.
Madam Yue impulsively said, “The child has been fussy lately. I don’t know if you, Doctor Shao, have any treatment remedies. We are not short of money and can pay any amount, as long as you can cure him.”
“The genetic disease cannot be cured completely, as I have already stated. And even with treatment, the child won’t live past twenty,” Shao He, facing the wealthy but imposing Madam Yue, patiently emphasized again.
“Moreover, the child’s condition may continue until he grows up before it potentially eases. You should also be aware of that….”
“I think you are merely incompetent in medicine, making excuses here. What Divine Doctor? I see you’re more of a charlatan.”
Madam Yue, hearing that there was no cure and incessant talk of the child not living past twenty, couldn’t contain her anger and started berating Shao He loudly.
The patients at Anji Hall, seeing her curse like a madwoman, couldn’t help but speak up, “Doctor Shao was kindly advising you, yet here you are insulting her.”
“She’s nothing more than a vulgar shrew.”
“Exactly. Doctor Shao’s medical skills are evident to all of us. What makes you think she’s a charlatan?”
“Even if Hua Tuo were reincarnated, there are people he couldn’t save. She advises you with good intentions, yet here you act shamelessly.”
The people spoke out one after another, criticizing her as Madam Yue’s expression grew increasingly ugly, and she pulled Lin Shuangqiao to leave.
“No need to see you out,” Shao He said with a smile, unfazed by the cursing.
This instantly earned her the people’s admiration and further disdain for Madam Yue.
Thus, Lin Shuangqiao was dragged to the door, while Madam Yue continued to malign Shao He, “I think this doctor is spouting nonsense. Let’s go to another medical hall and check there.”
A flash of hesitation crossed Lin Shuangqiao’s eyes as she recalled Shao He’s words and tightened her grip on the child.
