Chapter 140 - 139: Don’t Panic

Chapter 140: Chapter 139: Don’t Panic

Lin Xia sneered, "Your relatives’ place? Who are you trying to fool? We noticed you were following us a long time ago! Spit it out, what’s the deal?"

Mangzi glared up at Lin Xia with a skewed look in his eyes, "What’s the deal? Is this road owned by your family? So, if you can walk here, others can’t?" He didn’t believe they could do anything to him!

Lin Xia could see the contempt and defiance in the young man’s eyes and, in her anger, she kicked him hard.

"Spit it out now!"

Mangzi screamed out in anger; he could never have imagined that Lin Xia would dare to kick him!

He strained his neck, fighting back, "What gives you the right to kick me! Somebody help!"

Lin Dong was also taken aback by his sister’s action, but he quickly pinned down the young man who wanted to fight back.

Seeing that he wouldn’t cry without seeing the coffin, Lin Xia pulled out a sharp little knife she carried and pressed it against his face, "Dare to shout again and see if my knife is faster than your mouth?

"Better talk fast! Otherwise, I’ll really let your blood out! I remember the last time you tried to rob me!"

Mangzi saw the ferocity in Lin Xia’s eyes, and felt the coldness of the knife against his face; he had to admit he was shivering with fear.

Last time when they tried to rob her, she had a knife and was making gestures toward Dahai, and he didn’t feel much when fighting that other guy.

But now, being threatened at knife-point by her, he truly understood what fear was.

"I’ll talk! I’ll talk! It was Lin Qiang who told me to look for you whenever possible! I just happened to run into you guys today, and I was actually heading to the city to buy some stuff..."

"What’s he up to? What’s the situation with their family? You tell me!"

They still didn’t know the current state of the Lin Family, so Lin Xia directly inquired about these matters.

Mangzi hurriedly replied, "He’s at work in his department. His stepfather... your dad... said to hand over his entire salary before heading back to the mountains! That’s all I know! I didn’t do anything to you guys... You can let me go now, right?"

Lin Xia got the information she wanted; she knew there was no point in holding on to this young man.

Besides, she and Lin Dong had come with tasks to complete; once they were done, they’d head back to the city, and it was unlikely that they’d come here again.

"I can let you go! But I’m warning you, if we see you again, don’t blame me for being impolite!"

"Don’t worry! I won’t ever again!" Mangzi declared definitively.

Lin Xia knew he might just be talking big.

She gestured to Lin Dong to release him but kept a vigilant eye out in case the young man turned on them once set free.

Mangzi got up, picked up his hat from the ground, rubbed the side of his waist where he had been kicked, and looking at the knife in Lin Xia’s hand and the chilling ruthlessness in her eyes, he didn’t dare to do anything and turned to sprint away quickly.

Lin Xia and Lin Dong stood watching his retreating figure.

Lin Dong asked in a worried whisper, "Sis, what do we do now?"

They had just managed to spot the person following them; had they not noticed, he could have caused trouble for Aunt Zhao’s family.

Lin Xia whispered back, "Don’t panic! Let’s take the back roads to Aunt Zhao’s place, deliver the stuff, and then hurry back!"

Their top priority now was to leave as quickly as possible; the two of them could handle one young man, but against more, they would not stand a chance.

Afterward, she discerned the direction and led Lin Dong toward Aunt Zhao’s house, constantly keeping an eye out for anyone following them. They safely made their way to Aunt Zhao’s house through a roundabout path.

Aunt Zhao was delighted to see them arrive at her house; she sized up Lin Dong and smiled, "Lin Dong has grown quite a bit, hasn’t he? The boy is really turning out to be promising!"

Lin Dong chuckled. He had always had a special fondness for Old Widow Zhao, and now that he knew she had a daughter in college, his respect for her grew even more. Thus, from the moment he entered the door, his smile was unstoppable.

"Yes, indeed. I never expected this kid to grow up so fast!"

Lin Xia chatted idly with Old Widow Zhao for a few moments before hurriedly taking out the sweater to give to her.

"Old Widow, I don’t know if you’ll like the color or not. Xiaoqiu and I thought it looked pretty nice!"

Old Widow Zhao liked the sweater as soon as she saw it, "It’s lovely! How could I not like it? At my age, I just love colorful things!"

"I’m glad you like it!" Lin Xia was very happy. She could tell that Old Widow Zhao wasn’t just being polite—she genuinely liked it.

Old Widow Zhao caressed the knitted flowers on the sweater, praising, "You guys are really skilled with your hands, look how pretty these twisted flowers are! Xiaolin, thank you so much! The old lady won’t stand on ceremony with you!"

Her eldest daughter-in-law was also very skillful with her hands, but maybe because she was fond of Lin Xia, she felt a special affection for anything they gave her.

"Oh, why stand on ceremony? If anyone should be saying thanks, it’s us siblings who should really be thanking you!"

In Lin Xia’s heart, they owed Old Widow Zhao a lot. This small gift was just a token payback for a fraction of their gratitude. There were many more days to come, and they would continue to repay her kindness.

After a few warm words between them, Old Widow Zhao checked the time and insisted on having the siblings stay for a meal.

Lin Xia didn’t hide anything and shared with her the incident they had run into on the way over.

"...So, you see, Old Widow! Maybe some other time, but today it’s just not possible!"

Old Widow Zhao understood the urgency, "Alright then! I won’t keep you. Be careful on your way back! How about I get your brother to escort you? He’s just over at the neighbor’s house."

She feared Xiaolin and the others might be targeted by their stepmother, and as luck would have it, that was precisely what she was afraid of.

Lin Xia quickly waved her off, "No need, Old Widow! We’ll just cut through the back paths to the bus stop and head back from there. If anyone saw your son with us, it might cause trouble for you all!"

She didn’t want to bring any more trouble to Old Widow Zhao’s household. Besides, her son and those guys had previous beef, and if they saw him, they might plot revenge or something. She couldn’t let that happen.

"Why worry about trouble?" Old Widow Zhao pretended to head next door to call Jiang Mingyuan, but Lin Xia stopped her.

"Old Widow, please listen to me just this once, okay?" Lin Xia grabbed her arm.

Old Widow Zhao felt helpless, seeing Lin Xia’s insistence, "Alright then! But be careful, you hear me? Don’t come back here easily!

If there’s anything, I’ll send your brother to find you! When my girl gets back, I’ll ask her to help your brother. If she agrees, I’ll have your brother take her straight there..."

"That would be great! But Old Widow, you can’t force her, okay?" Lin Xia added, worried that if Old Widow Zhao’s daughter didn’t agree, it would end badly.

Old Widow Zhao laughed, "Don’t worry!"

Lin Xia thought for a moment and then asked, "Did you manage to buy the postage stamps?"

"Bought them! After I finished talking to your brother, he went straight out and bought five sets!"

Five sets!

Lin Xia smiled happily.

The siblings didn’t let Old Widow Zhao see them out. They quickly left the house, and after checking the gate to make sure no one was around, they hurried away.

This time, Lin Xia took Lin Dong along a different path to the bus stop.

They didn’t wait directly at the stop, fearing they’d be too conspicuous, but instead hid at the doorway of a house next to the stop.
