Chapter 47: Flying Fairy’s Tavern
Chapter 47: 47: Flying Fairy’s Tavern
Much to his surprise, the Fifth Gate which he just passed was directly connected with the urban housing for common folks.
Ash went to a nearby tavern as soon as his eyes landed onto one. As expected, the tavern was so lively. Although the customers were all drunk and speaking nonsense in loud noises, Ash didn’t feel any malice, just a euphoric atmosphere due to the alcohol and "herbs" infused edibles to make the customers eat more and drink more.
As he stepped downstairs, the cute barmaid who wore a tight, butt short qipao outfit, greeted him politely. Upon a closer look, the barmaid had a pair of long and pointy ears below her ashen long hair.
’Is she an elf?! Hold on! There’s elves in this world, even?!’ Ash was quite shocked inside. Nevertheless, he kept his conduct poised and cordial.
"Welcome to Fairy’s Hall, Young Master! My name is Laufei, at your service!" The barmaid was quick-witted, she immediately knew how to treat the customers according to their demeanour. "A single seat, I presume?"
"Yes, please."
"Understood, Young Master. This way please."
Before long, he was escorted to the second floor which only had a few people and was not too rowdy. He really appreciated the gesture and her insightful manners.
"What would you like to order?"
"Something light but also filling at the same time." He then searched for the wine to accompany his meal. He read the name and the description thoroughly. "As for the wine... I would like to try this White Bamboo Wine. It’s light, smooth, yet also has a strong aftertaste. Mhh, that combination would be perfect medicine for my fatigued body."
"Understood." The cute barmaid noted everything in a piece of paper with a pencil. "Please kindly wait for your order."
After the barmaid had trudged downstairs, the other customers on the second floor stole a glance at him. They collectively thought; ’Who is this young brat? Which family does he belong to?’
Ash felt their gazes on his person as if they were throwing daggers at him. However, he opted to ignore them all. Waiting in leisure while resting his back.
Not long after, his order was served on the table. A whole steamed halibut fish served with garlic and ginger sauce, cooked to perfection. No fishy smell at all. He could even smell the fresh ocean from the dish. On the other side, various cold dishes that have been pickled into the right amount of acidity accompanied the main dish.
Instead of rice, the chef was kind enough to serve him with jasmine rice porridge. Less gluten and less starchy. Perfect for a body that needs something easy to digest.
After a polite bow, the cute barmaid excused herself downstairs. "Thank you, Laufei."
The cute barmaid halted her step. She didn’t expect that somebody would remember her name at the first meeting.
"En!" She turned back at him. "Please call me whenever you need my help."
Ash’s smile bloomed upon seeing the dish before him. He was indeed asking for something light and filling, but he didn’t expect it would be a quite exquisite one.
It’s been a while since the last time he ate something that is cooked properly and well-seasoned as well.
He began with sipping the wine. The sweet and fragrant wine soon emanated in his mouth, climbing up to his nose, down onto his tongue with a slightly bitter after taste. He almost cried in happiness for being able to taste alcohol for a while.
"Ahh..." He sighed. "This is really good wine."
Afterward, he picked a bowl and used the chopsticks to pick the main dish and the cold dishes one after another. He ate politely and didn’t make any noises. But everyone could tell that he’s really enjoying his food to the fullest.
While eating in peace, Ash listened to their conversation with his sharp hearing. From them, he could summarize the general information about the City of Long River.
In this South District which was 40 square kilometres, the hierarchy could be divided into two main branches.
From the very top, The Council Leader. A person who led every borough. They were responsible for safety and order under the direct order of the mayor. As of now, there were four Council Leaders for each borough. The North, South, West, and East.
The North borough was fashioned for the administrative district with all the luxury buildings adorned the landscape.
Meanwhile, the south borough was designed for housing and small business like this tavern.
The Eastern Borough was designated to be a port town where all the fishery industries were situated. Hundreds if not thousands of Gold Coins enter the City of Long River every month.
As for the West Borough, the Council Leader of this borough was responsible for processing the beasts or herbs that were harvested from the wilderness. And would be distributed into various marketplaces throughout the Western Region. Without exaggeration, Western Borough was the richest amongst all and the Mayor’s Office was situated here along with the city’s elites.
Before he could even finish his meals, a loud commotion was happening downstairs. He could hear Laufei’s sharp, high-pitched cry all the way up.
"You stupid long-eared rat!" Said a young man arrogantly. "Look what have you done to my robe! It’s all messy and dirty now!"
"Aahh! Please, let me go! It’s hurt!"
The guests who dined on the second floor headed toward the railing to see the whole ordeal.
"What’s happening?"
"Bastard! Which fool dared hurt my precious Laufei!" The other guests who came here to see her cuteness snapped.
However, all of that bravado was silenced when they saw the person who had Laufei’s ears in his hand.
"Tsk! Why is that brat here of all places?!"
Curious, Ash strode silently toward the railing. His eyes were cold yet filled with unexplainable hatred and killing intent.
"Who’s that young man in yellow robe?" Ash asked the person beside him.
"It’s Ma Jun. The youngest son of Ma Yuan, the Southern Borough’s Council Leader." Answered the person on his left.
The other person on his right side soon added, "He’s renowned for his disdain for non-human workers in this city."
Ash raised an eyebrow. "Non-human workers?!"
"You must be new in this city, huh?"
"I just arrived in this city, literally."
The person on his left chimed again. "If that’s the case, you’ll understand once the morning comes. For now, let the owner take care of this problem."
"Aiish! Laufei is a cute, hardworking little girl. It would be a waste if she ought to be executed first thing in the morning." The person on his right shook his head.
"Wait what?!" Ash was infuriated. "Just for dirtying a robe, and she needs to die?! What a nonsense!"
"It is nonsense. True. But, it is what it is. We, common folks, couldn’t possibly fight the corruption in this city. By letting us live and thrive inside the protection of the city is a blessing already."
Ash gritted his teeth tightly. He was so upset that he couldn’t do anything to help her since using his Qi would expose himself as an Immortal Beast in front of these people.
Unless... he would do it in secrecy.
