Chapter 74: It’s no loss to me
Knocking on the door, she braced herself for whatever was going to come.
"Come in miss Gu.."
The door opened and Tzang Yichen looked up to see a woman that looked like the female version of himself.
He was momentarily at loss of words, but he coughed lightly to regain his composure.
"To what do I hold this please miss Gu? Your name seems rather.....out of place.."
Qingran studied Yichen for a moment, there was no doubt, seeing him in person, the resemblance was too much to say they weren’t blood related.
"Do you remember her? Our mother, Gu Shuijing?"
Yichen’s eyes darkened, how did she know that name.
"How did you know that name?"
Qingran chuckled lowly "She’s my mother, how can I not know her name? That was the only thing she left me.."
Yichen frowned what’s she trying to tell him that she was his younger sister, the resemblance she bore to his mother was alarming high.
Tzang Yichen’s fingers curled slightly against the desk, his expression unreadable. "I don’t know what you’re trying to imply, Miss Gu, but I’d appreciate it if you got to the point."
Qingran scoffed, crossing her arms. "Of course you don’t. Must be nice, living your life without a care in the world." Her gaze darkened as she took a step closer. "Tell me, was it easy for him?"
Yichen’s brows furrowed. "What?"
"To throw me away." Her voice was steady, but there was something cold beneath it. "Did he ever mention me? Or was I just a mistake he erased without a second thought?"
A flicker of irritation crossed Yichen’s face. "Miss Gu, I have no idea what the hell you’re talking about."
Qingran let out a sharp laugh, though there was no humor in it. "Of course you don’t. Why would you? You were the one he kept."
His eyes narrowed. "Kept?"
"Lingquan add him to the save list. You don’t play fair at all, I don’t know what your aim in all this is ..."
[Ding! Tzang Yichen has been added to save list. Save list completion progress, 5/10. 50% completed]
Qingran sighed and stood up, she didn’t want to waste any more time here.
"Meet me at Family clinic at 3pm for a dna test 2 days for now. Without the Tzang family, I’ve lived a good life, you can Guggle my name, I’m not after your so called wealth. So whether you show up or not...I don’t really care.."
Yichen watched her with a calculating gaze, his fingers tapping lightly against the desk. He didn’t know what annoyed him more—the ridiculous claim she was making or the sheer audacity in her tone.
"You expect me to believe that we’re related just because you say so?" His voice was cold, dismissive. "That’s not how the world works, Miss Gu."
Qingran smirked. "That’s why I suggested the DNA test, genius."
His jaw clenched. He didn’t appreciate her attitude, nor the way she carried herself as if she was the one in control of this conversation.
But what unsettled him most was the nagging feeling in his gut—that she wasn’t lying.
He had spent years burying everything that had to do with his so-called family. His mother’s name was nothing more than a fading memory, one he had long stopped trying to hold onto.
And yet, this woman spoke of her so casually, so easily, as if she had the right.
His fingers curled slightly. "And if I don’t show up?"
Qingran shrugged, her expression indifferent. "Then don’t. It’s no loss to me. I don’t need a brother, and I definitely don’t need the Tzang family’s acknowledgment."
Yichen let out a sharp laugh, though there was no amusement in it. "Then why are you here?"
Qingran tilted her head. "Curiosity." She stepped back toward the door, her hand resting on the knob. "Wanted to see if I was missing out on anything."
She opened the door but paused before stepping out, glancing at him one last time. "Turns out, I wasn’t."
The door clicked shut behind her.
Yichen remained still for a long moment, staring at the empty space she had just occupied. His chest felt oddly tight, his mind clouded with thoughts he didn’t want to entertain.
He reached for his phone. Without thinking, he typed her name into the search bar.
Gu Qingran.
The results loaded instantly.
Instead of gossip articles or business scandals like he had expected, the screen was flooded with research papers, pharmaceutical studies, and industry awards.
Several reputable medical journals had her name attached to breakthroughs in antiviral medication.
There were interviews where she spoke about cutting-edge developments in the pharmaceutical world. Even the government had collaborated with her on multiple projects.
Yichen scrolled through the results, his frown deepening.
This wasn’t the profile of someone seeking wealth or recognition from the Tzang family.
And yet, she had come today. Why?
His fingers hovered over his phone for a moment before he locked the screen, tossing it onto the desk. His temples throbbed as he leaned back in his chair.
"Gu Qingran, huh..."
For the first time in years, something from his past refused to be ignored.
By the time Qingran got back home, it was 6:30 PM. She placed the grocery bags on the counter, stretching her shoulders as she glanced around. The house was quiet except for the faint sound of the television playing in the living room.
She walked over and found Tang Haoyu curled up on the couch, fast asleep. His head rested against the armrest, his body half-covered by a blanket he must’ve pulled over himself before dozing off.
Qingran’s gaze flickered to the screen, and she chuckled softly.
The same old cartoon.
For all his tough talk and insistence on being independent, he was still a kid at heart. That was... reassuring in a way.
She lowered the volume with the remote, then reached out to fix the blanket properly over him. He stirred slightly but didn’t wake.
"Good," she murmured. "Stay asleep for now."
With that, she straightened and headed for her room. A shower sounded nice right now. She still felt the weight of her earlier meeting clinging to her, and washing it away—at least physically—would help.
Stepping into the bathroom, she turned on the water and let the steam fill the space before stepping under the spray. The warm water ran down her back, loosening the tension in her shoulders, but her mind remained restless.
Tzang Yichen.
She had walked away first, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t still thinking about it.
Would he show up tomorrow?
Would it even matter if he did?
She exhaled sharply, pushing those thoughts away. No use dwelling on it now.
