Chapter 196: Glucose solution

Slowly," the doctor cautioned as she drank. "You’ll feel a bit of energy returning soon, but don’t mistake it as a sign to overexert. Let your body guide you."

Bai Shiyue gave a faint nod, her hand still resting protectively over her belly. "I won’t. I’m not planning on being a hero."

The doctor gave a short chuckle. "You’re already one. That baby? That’s the bravest journey in this whole apocalypse."

Bai Shiyue’s eyes shimmered again, but she smiled. "I’ll protect him. Or her. No matter what."

"Good," Yiran said, brushing a strand of hair from Bai Shiyue’s forehead. "Now go back and rest. Get some breakfast as well."

"Okay, thank you. Have a good day ahead" she said softly as she stood.

"Thank you. And you’ll rest." Yiran’s voice was firm but kind. "Doctor’s orders."

Bai Shiyue didn’t argue. She simply nodded, gave them both a quiet thank-you, and left the room, taking the elevator down once more.

The next to arrive was Fang Mokin, still covered in dust and bits of dried mud. He’d washed his face and arms, but his clothes were stained from hours of work at the site.

He stepped into the room with a tired but respectful nod. "Morning."

"Come in, Mr Fang " the doctor said, already preparing a new dose of glucose solution. "Let’s see how your body held up."

Fang Mokin moved stiffly to the cot. "I’ve felt worse," he muttered.

"I’d rather not hear that from my patients," the doctor replied, checking his pulse. "You lost a lot of fluids overnight. You’re functioning off adrenaline and stubbornness."

"Stubbornness has always worked fine for me," Fang Mokin said, offering a tired grin.

Yiran rolled her eyes as she handed him the glucose solution. "That, and your back nearly broke carrying those cement bags. Sit still and let us help you."

Fang Mokin obeyed, swallowing the drink in slow gulps. "Is Qingran still out there?"

"She is.." Yiran said. "Keeping an eye on everyone... and on Zhang Yi."

At the name, Fang Mokin frowned. "She’s not letting him out of her sight..huh"

"No, I mean he’s quite shady" Yiran confirmed.

"Good."

The doctor finished his check and nodded. "You’re in surprisingly decent shape. But don’t push yourself today. You’ve already done more than enough. Rotate to lighter work for the night shift."

Fang Mokin stood and nodded. "Got it." He stretched his back with a soft grunt. "I’ll send Yu Song next"

Yiran was already by the door, waving the next in line.

Yu Song entered quietly, his long frame carrying less visible fatigue, but his eyes were lined with sleeplessness.

"Morning," he greeted curtly, stepping inside.

The doctor gestured for him to sit. "Come on. You seem to forget you’re human, not a machine."

Yu Song didn’t argue. He sat and removed his outer jacket, exposing a few bruises on his arms and a faint scrape on his shoulder.

"Where did you get this?" Yiran asked with a frown, reaching out.

"The roof probably. Climbed too fast trying to secure the tarp. Slipped on a loose tile."

The doctor clicked his tongue. "That could’ve ended worse. You’re lucky."

"I’m always lucky," Yu Song murmured, his expression unreadable.

The examination passed quickly. The doctor applied disinfectant to the scrape and handed over a pack of energy tablets with the glucose drink.

Yu Song took them both, nodding in thanks. "I’ll send Meng Nian up."

Meng Nian’s footsteps echoed down the hallway a minute later.

Compared to the others, he looked strangely put together. His shirt was clean, his pants properly tucked. But his eyes betrayed the long hours. There was a shadow beneath them, and his smile was faint as he entered.

"Doctor, miss Yiran."

"Little Meng.. The all to ask am an" the doctor said with a slight shake of his head. "You’re always the last to sit down."

"Someone has to make sure the others get up first."

He settled on the cot, and Yiran handed him a fresh cup of glucose solution. "You need this more than any of them. You didn’t sleep at all, did you?"

"Not yet..." Meng Nian admitted. "I stayed with the logistics team to account for what’s left in storage. We’re running low on oil and rice. I’ll speak to Qingran later."

"Sleep first.." the doctor said firmly. "Then talk later."

Meng Nian chuckled. "She’s going to say the same thing, isn’t she?"

"Yes.." Yiran replied. "Which means you really have no choice."

The doctor checked his blood pressure, then looked at the faint tremor in his fingers.

"You’ve pushed yourself too far again. Take your vitamins later, sleep for four hours, then eat something heavy."

Meng Nian finished the drink in silence. Then he stood and inclined his head.

"I’ll send up the next group."

"Meng Nian, let your mind rest okay?" Yiran called softly as he left. "Even if it’s just for a bit."

The next five men came up as a group, three from the rooftop team, two from ground support. Each bore the same signs of hard labor: strained shoulders, fatigue in every movement.

The doctor and Yiran worked efficiently, rotating them through checks, administering glucose, noting bruises, minor sprains, and reminding each of them to rest.

The final pair was led in by Xu Tianming, the youngest out of the men but he has proven to be among the strongest.

"These are the last two for now," he said. "But sister Qingran asked for glucose to be shared around noon."

"Are you checked yet?" Yiran asked.

Xu Tianming hesitated. "I’m fine.."

"You’re not exempt..." the doctor said without looking up.

Xu sighed and finally sat down as one of the final workers left. "I’m 16, Doc..this ain’t my first, or second time staying up late."

The doctor nodded, a smile appearing on his face "Sure you were either reading some naughty, gooning or playing games."

"..."

"I did not goon. I watched anime and played video games, I read comics from time to time."

Yiran brought over another cup of glucose.

"Thank you.." he said sincerely, then downed it in one go.

The doctor examined him with the practiced touch of someone who didn’t need small talk to understand a man’s exhaustion.

"Same advice I gave the others," the doctor said. "Hydrate, eat well, and rotate to a lighter task when your shift is on. You’ve done more than enough."

Xu Tianming stood and saluted half-jokingly, but respectfully. "Message received, sir."
