Chapter 192: She was just

Bai Shiyue gave a small, breathy laugh. "The kind of woman who walks through hell and comes back holding other people’s hands."

Yiran nodded. Her eyes were focused down the hallway, distant for a moment. "She doesn’t just survive. She drags others back from the edge with her."

They walked in silence for a moment, their footsteps soft on the worn carpet. Around them, the hushed chaos of survival continued, hurried footsteps, the occasional clatter of salvaged supplies.

"She scared me a little.." Bai Shiyue admitted suddenly. "Back when we first woke up in this place. Not because she was reckless, but because... she didn’t hesitate. Like she’d already seen it all. She was so calm that I didn’t feel an panic."

"She has.." Yiran said quietly. "I don’t know everything, but she carries herself like someone who’s already lived the worst day of their life and decided it wasn’t going to break her."

Bai Shiyue’s grip tightened briefly on the tray she still held. "I think that’s what makes her different from the rest of us. We’re still afraid of losing things. She’s already lost them."

Yiran sighed "That made me kinda sad. Between Shiyue, let’s do a checkup on the baby tomorrow..just in case."

Bai Shiyue blinked, caught off guard by the sudden shift in topic. Her fingers flexed on the edge of the tray, and a flush rose faintly to her cheeks. "You remembered?"

Yiran glanced at her, a faint smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. "Of course I did. It’s not something you just forget, you’re under our care after all. And with all the chaos lately... I want to make sure you’re both alright."

The flush deepened, but Bai Shiyue nodded. "Alright. Tomorrow morning, then."

Yiran reached out and pressed the call button for the elevator, her thumb lingering for a second longer than necessary.

The soft ding echoed down the quiet hallway, and Bai Shiyue stepped in beside her, shifting the tray in her arms as the doors slid open.

The inside of the elevator was dim, lit by a single emergency bulb that cast everything in a slightly yellowed hue.

Scratches lined the mirrored walls.

They stepped in, and the doors closed with a reluctant sigh.

For a moment, silence.

Bai Shiyue let out a breath. "Do you ever get the feeling this thing’s going to stop in the middle and trap us?"

"Every time," Yiran said dryly, hitting the button for the 40th floor. "But considering what we’ve already survived, a stuck elevator feels like a vacation."

Shiyue gave a quiet laugh and leaned against the side wall, shifting her weight. "I never thought I’d get used to this. The flickering lights, the strange quiet, the way everyone holds their breath every time we move between floors."

"You do what you have to," Yiran replied, voice low. Her eyes flicked to the dim ceiling light. "We adapt. That’s what Qingran taught us."

"I keep wondering..." Bai Shiyue murmured after a moment, "what kind of world this child will grow up in. What kind of place we’re building now."

Yiran’s leanded against the wall, think deeply.

Her expression grew serious, and she glanced over at the younger woman with a softness rarely seen in her eyes. "Maybe not the world we wanted... but it’ll be one worth surviving. That’s what Qingran is fighting for. What all of us are fighting for."

Bai Shiyue nodded slowly. "It just feels like... everything’s balancing on a blade’s edge."

"It is..." Yiran said. "But so are we. And we’re still here."

They watched the number climb in a comfortable silence.

"She’s not just fighting for survival..." Yiran said softly. "She’s fighting to make sure we don’t become what the world tried to turn us into."

Bai Shiyue stood quietly beside her, her eyes reflecting the low light. "Then we fight with her, for as long as we can."

The elevator gave a ding when it reached the 40th floor.

"I’ll come by first thing in the morning with the scanner. It’s not much, but it’ll tell us what we need to know about the baby’s condition."

Shiyue nodded, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Thank you, Yiran. Really."

Yiran offered a half-smile. "Get some rest. That’s the best thing you can do now."

"Alright. Thank you, do well to get some rest yourself as well."

Yiran nodded as she turned and headed back to the elevator. She still has to write her report and then report to the doctor, before she could think of sleeping.

"Another long day. I should check on that other patient."

She stretched as she waited to get to the 34th floor, this was still better than the hospital, if they were this short staffed in the hospital, she would have collapsed by now.

"Miss Yiran, can we work on the reports..we have to get to it, so we can get some sleep before morning." freeωebnovēl.c૦m

Yiran nodded as she files, the hotel was pretty big and intact, so it wasnt hard to find pen and paper.

"Alright then let’s start with miss Qingran, she has severe exhaustion, so what did you do for her."

Yiran stood straighter, her tone professional. "I administered two IV bags, one for hydration and one glucose. Her vitals were stable, heart rate slightly elevated but within range. No fever. I advised a full day of rest and minimal external stimulus, though..."

She hesitated, then added with a small grimace, "We both know she won’t take the full twenty-four hours."

The doctor gave a quiet, noncommittal hum. "Was she awake when you left her?"

"She drifted off. Light sleep, maybe, but she was resting. I made sure someone would be nearby in case she wakes up disoriented or tries to get up too soon."

"Good.." the doctor said, scribbling something on the clipboard. "Any signs of dehydration or suppressed immune function?"

"Dehydration, definitely. Her skin was dry, lips cracked. But no signs of infection or suppressed immune response so far. She’s just burnt out."

"Keep an eye on her pupils and temperature in the morning. And check her throat, she sounded hoarse earlier."

"I will," Yiran nodded. "She hasn’t coughed since the IV started, so hopefully that’s a good sign."
