Rebirth: The Comeback of the Girl
Chapter 40 Buying Stationery

Chapter 40: Chapter 40 Buying Stationery

After dinner, Mrs. Zhen gathered her children around her, and the three of them discussed something carefully, each giving their opinion in turn.

Zhen Yan learned from Mrs. Zhen about the mistress’s pregnancy and expressed indifference to his soon-to-be step siblings.

Zhen Yu suggested to her mom that they should quickly find someone to draft an agreement regarding child support, making sure to outline the monthly amount, time, and method of payment, and the duration all in writing.

To prevent Mr. Zhen from changing his mind later.

Mrs. Zhen nodded repeatedly, realizing as days passed that her daughter knew more and more.

Although she did not know where her daughter learned all this from, in the simple heart of Mrs. Zhen, it didn’t matter where she learned it from—as long as she’s learned it, it’s her own skill!

Once they found no more loopholes to address, the three dropped the topic.

Zhen Yan rolled his eyes, then hugged his mother’s arm and sticky-sweetly called out, "Mom~~"

Zhen Yu shivered slightly, knowing he was after money.

Mrs. Zhen swatted her son away, saying annoyed: "Ugh~ stay away from me~ just speak if you need something! That calling is creepy!"

Zhen Yu, cold on the outside but internally laughing wickedly, rolled around.

Zhen Yan, with his lips pouted, sadly said, "Mom~ school’s starting soon, give me some money to buy stationery."

"No big deal! How much?" Mrs. Zhen asked dominantly, then turned to ask, "Xiao Yu! Don’t you need to buy some too?"

Zhen Yan immediately said the amount, Zhen Yu nodded, adding today’s cost of buying books to her mother’s account.

Mrs. Zhen didn’t mind much, as she’s always careless with money, and she is always generous when it comes to her children’s genuine needs.

Zhen Yan, having received the money, smugly raised his eyebrows at his sister.

Zhen Yu, just teasing her brother, showed no reaction and put her share of money away, then strolled back to her room to study.

But Zhen Yan, with no one to show off to, was bitterly stifled.

Zhen Yu joined for breakfast after her morning workout, along with her brother at the table.

"Little sister~ let’s go buy stationery together?" Zhen Yan mumbled through a mouthful of bread.

"Okay." Zhen Yu, swallowing a spoon of porridge, agreed.

Zhen Yan then smiled happily, chomping down more chunks of bread and stuffed some pickled vegetable strips into his mouth.

"Zhen Yan! Zhen Yan!" Fu Yu entered the kitchen shouting, spotting the Zhen siblings having breakfast, and plopped down on the edge of the kang.

He couldn’t stop urging, "Hurry up and eat! After eating, let’s go out and play!"

"I’m going to Four Merchants Store to buy stationery after a while! Are you coming?"

Fu Yu’s eyes darted, and like his butt was on fire, he ran off.

A distant voice followed, "I’m going home to get money..."

Zhen Yan and Zhen Yu continued eating, and within a minute, another call came.

"Zhen Yu! Zhen Yu!" Bai Xue walked in alone, her little tag-along brother nowhere in sight.

Zhen Yan immediately asked: "Where’s your brother?"

"Just left with Fu Yu to his place!" Bai Xue replied, sitting where Fu Yu sat earlier, happily asking, "Going to the store later? Good thing I brought money today!"

"Yeah, later." Zhen Yu replied, continuing her porridge.

Two more minutes passed, and the third call came.

"Zhen Yan, Zhen Yan! We’re coming!" Han Jiayang burst in like a wild bull, followed closely by his brother Han Ming Yue a few steps behind.

Zhen Yan, bombarded by a wave of visitors, sped up his eating, his mouth full of food, he mumbled: "Swollen a moment~ I’ll finish soon~"

Zhen Yu slowly swallowed the food in her mouth and called out, "Everyone, take a seat~ Brother! Don’t rush."

Zhen Yan obviously didn’t listen and continued to wolf down his food.

A group of people marched mightily toward the Four Merchants Store.

The Four Merchants Store was less than a five-minute walk from the families’ area near the transshipment station, in the opposite direction of the train station, crossing a dirt path between two large pits.

Speaking of which, this families’ area is situated amidst a checkerboard of pits. Zhen Yu didn’t know how these pits came to be; they had been there as long as she could remember.

The pits in the direction of the store were dry, large, and shallow, about the height of a person.

The last time they were riding bicycles, Zhen Yan took her, and she ended up falling into one of these pits.

And the pits towards the train station side were smaller yet deeper, "small" being relative to the dry pits, but still the size of a farmhouse courtyard.

How deep, you ask? In winter when the shallow waters froze, kids would go down to the bottom of the pit to skate. Standing on the ice and looking up, people on the edges looked like they were standing atop a far-off tall building, and if you stepped back a few steps, those at the bottom disappeared from sight.

When passing by the dry pit, Zhen Yan was once again ruthlessly mocked by some boys.

Soon, they all entered the courtyard of the Four Merchants Store.

Curious, isn’t it? The Four Merchants Store sits in a very large and spacious courtyard, with doorways on three sides and a lonely two-story building in the middle.

Returning to this place after many years, Zhen Yu felt momentarily disoriented but quickly regained her composure.

The store was quiet with few people around, and a bunch of older children crowded into the stationery section.

They whispered and pointed, sharing thoughts closely with each other.

Bai Xue also tugged at Zhen Yu and asked, "What are you going to buy?"

Zhen Yu spat out two words, "Notebook, pen."

Bai Xue, unconcerned by her aloofness, excitedly pointed at a pink pencil case in the display and said, "I’m going to buy this! Look~ how pretty!"

"Okay!" Zhen Yu casually agreed and then took a look, seeing that it quite suited the aesthetic preferences of a young girl at the time.

Zhen Yu checked where the notebooks she needed were located and picked a few pens, promptly paid, and was the first to finish shopping and stood waiting by the side.

"Is that all you’re buying?" Han Mingyue came over carrying some things, among which Zhen Yu spotted a set square and a compass.

She raised her hand and pointed, "You need to buy these too?"

Han Mingyue nodded, "Middle school math is split into algebra and geometry, didn’t you buy them?"

"I’m buying them now!" said Zhen Yu as she dropped the remark and headed to the counter.

Han Mingyue stood still, watching her quickly point out items at the counter and return with them in less than three sentences.

"..." Han Mingyue had never seen a girl shop like her! Look at Bai Xue there...

Suppressing her thoughts, Han Mingyue asked quietly, "Did you get everything? Do you have the paper for covering books?"

Zhen Yu was startled; she hadn’t covered books in many years and had no idea!

"What paper? Where can I buy it?"

Han Mingyue had already noticed this summer that Zhen Yu’s practical knowledge seemed to have regressed; she had been puzzled and asking about commonplace things numerous times.

"Kraft paper, or you can use the back of old calendars to wrap them. Do you have any at home?"

"... I don’t know."

Han Mingyue sighed, "I’ll bring you some tomorrow."

Zhen Yu accepted without hesitation, "Good."

The trio on the other side finally finished picking and bought their items, and the group headed straight towards the Zhen Family home.

"Love you love love you endlessly, I can day by day, month by month, year after year forever..."

As Zhen Yan’s off-key singing began, Zhen Yu exchanged a look with Bai Xue, who couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
