Chapter 116: There is nothing to talk about
Inside the room, Margaret Whitmore was kneeling down in front of a woman. Her hands were trembling and she kept on begging.
"Julian, please forgive my Lucian if he did something to offend you or John. He is just a kid. He doesn’t understand. I’ll do my best to stop him once he comes back from Hong Kong. I’ll give him a good beating. He’ll never do something like this again."
"Six years ago I let you, mother and son pair, leave out of the pity of my heart. Now, I regret my decision." Julian Smith glanced at the woman at her feet with a disgruntled expression. Margaret was the same age as Julian but still looked younger—and more beautiful despite the years. Even with all her salons and spas, Julian could not fight against natural grace.
"Should we beat her, Madam Julian?" one of the men said. There were three bulky men holding rods.
"It is not necessary. I’m not that vulgar of a woman. If she understands by my words, there’s no need for violence." Julian waved her hand with elegance. "Besides, I cannot witness violence. You may teach her the lesson once I leave."
"Madam Julian, your worry is baseless. There is no way my Lucian would think about laying any claim on the inheritance of Victor Smith. We are both content with our lives. We don’t want anything else. We just want to be left alone." Margaret kept her head low, her voice soft with reverence. This woman had already once made their life a living hell. She didn’t want history to repeat.
"Silence. Do not pretend that you know nothing. It must have been you behind the planning. Your son is still a child—he can’t think of such complex things. He contacted your family in Hong Kong and wanted their help to attend Victor Smith’s hearing." Julian laughed. "But your family is just a bunch of cowards. Not only did they decline to help him, but they also warned us to keep you both away."
Margaret was startled. Lucian had told her he’d gone to Hong Kong to accompany his President. "That stupid kid," she muttered under her breath. Once he returned home, she would surely give him a real lesson to straighten out his rebellious mind. I’ve told him countless times about the nature of our family. And yet he still contacted them—and didn’t even tell me?
"But let me tell you this: if either you or your useless bastard of a son appears on the day of the inheritance hearing, I’ll not let you two walk out alive. I’ve been merciful enough with you these past years."
Suddenly something flickered in Margaret’s eyes. "Say whatever you want about me. But Madam—please don’t call my son a bastard. He is not."
Margaret was a mother. And a mother would take any humiliation, suffer any pain for the sake of her child. If not for Lucian, she would never have bowed to Julian Smith. That was her strength—the unwavering, quiet strength of a mother.
"Why must I not?" Julian hissed. "He is a bastard. He has no future. Even if he dares to create one, I’ll see it destroyed. You two are like pathetic insects beneath our feet. We can crush you at any moment. John Smith abandoned you for me. Your own family disowned you. You. Have. Nothing."
"I was married to John when you crawled into his bed and got yourself pregnant!" Margaret cried.
Julian’s eyes narrowed, her nostrils flared. Because she could not deny it. Instead, she laughed. "Beat that vixen until she can’t stand anymore!"
The three men began to close in around Margaret. But there was no fear in her eyes. Outside, Jazmine Harrison had been waiting for some time.
"Come on," she murmured to herself. "You could break those three like twigs. You were the one who taught me martial arts in my last life. There’s no way these thickheads are a threat. Are you really going to suffer this just for your son?"
But Margaret didn’t move. She was resolute in her stillness.
Jazmine sighed and stepped into the apartment.
"Stop right now." Her voice wasn’t loud—but it rang with unshakable power.
"Who are you to barge in like this? Some nosy neighbor?" one man barked. "Back off, or we’ll add you to the list. You really think we won’t?"
Jazmine ignored him. She walked calmly to Margaret’s side, knelt, and helped her to her feet with a steady hand.
The thug looked at his madam, waiting for her cue—but stopped when he saw Julian’s expression frozen in shock.
"Those green eyes..." Julian whispered. "You’re... Jazmine Harrison?"
"An alone woman cornered by scoundrels. How unlike the kind and charitable Madam Julian Smith of Beijing." Jazmine’s voice dripped with disgust. "I used to admire you, you know—because of your so-called philanthropy."
Of course, she hadn’t.
"This isn’t what it looks like," Julian stammered. Dammit! Why now, of all times? Even John doesn’t know I still threaten that woman! If this gets out... I’m finished. "How about we sit and talk this out?"
"There’s nothing to talk about," Jazmine cut in coldly. "I’ve heard everything I needed to."
