Chapter 106: That fateful night

Sebastian Crowne still remembered what had happened that night.

A day before that night, he had taken her to the lake where his grandfather used to take him when he was a child. The place occupied a special place in his heart. And he wanted to associate it with the most treasured memories of his life. He had decided to propose to her that night.

Under the beautiful fireworks and serene enchantment of starless sky, he had gone down on his knees and presented her with the ring. Jazmine Harrison was flushed, surprised and everything. It was too sudden. They were both young and hadn’t known each other for more than a month. But they both also knew that they were meant for each other. With trembling hands, she had grasped his hands and accepted the proposal.

Things were about to change. Sebastian Crowne thought eternal bliss awaited him next. But what happened next day shattered their beautiful dream into pieces.

The next day, only for a few hours, Sebastian Crowne had left her alone at the penthouse. And in those few hours, everything terrible happened.

Sebastian Crowne still recalled his brother had rushed to him telling something terrible had happened to Jazmine Harrison. He recalled the phone slipping from his hands and smashing into the floor. He recalled himself not caring at all. What had happened next had been a little blank for Sebastian Crowne. All he could recall was that he hadn’t felt that vulnerable in his life. He had rushed to the penthouse not caring for anything or anyone in the world.

When he had seen his Jazmine Harrison covered in blood, his heart shattered. It felt like his whole world was crumbling. It was only the rapid rise and fall of Jazmine Harrison’s chest and her weak pulse that had kept him from going berserk.

"Sarah Blackwood. Where is Sarah Blackwood? She was there. Sebastian Crowne, where is she?" That was the first thing she had said after gaining a little bit of her consciousness back while they were on their way to the hospital. Thinking back about that time, Sebastian Crowne realized how naive she was.

She had a pure heart. To those she was true, she would do anything to protect. That was one of her qualities that made Sebastian Crowne’s heart warm up to her back six years ago. That and her indescribable strength.

Surrounded by all the negativity that she had suffered when she grew up, she had still retained the goodness of her heart. She was still so pure and untainted. Her naivety was adorable. Yet it was what had resulted in their separation.

"Jazmine Harrison... You scared me. Don’t ever do that again." Once Jazmine Harrison had woken up, Sebastian Crowne hugged her like there was no tomorrow. They were already on their way to the hospital. There was nothing else in his eyes than her. "Stay with me." That was the first time in his life that Sebastian Crowne had felt so scared. If anything had happened to her, he didn’t know what he would do. Even the thought of losing her suffocated him.

"Sarah Blackwood. She had also been there. Where is she?"

"Sarah Blackwood..." Sebastian Crowne was reluctant to say. "We didn’t find anyone else there. Recall correctly, Jazmine Harrison. Was she with you?"

"Yes, she was!" Jazmine Harrison’s eyes widened in fear. "You have left her there. Sebastian Crowne, turn the car! She was there. She was hurt. W-We must get her."

"I’ll send someone to get her. Please calm down." Sebastian Crowne hugged her, attempting to soothe her. In no way would he turn back when Jazmine Harrison’s wounds were so serious. She had already lost a critical amount of blood. Sebastian Crowne didn’t care about any Sarah Blackwood at that moment. His Jazmine Harrison was in a dire situation. If he didn’t get her to the hospital soon... Sebastian Crowne didn’t want to think of the consequences.

"No, turn the car. Sebastian Crowne, turn the car." Jazmine Harrison was using the last of her energy to fight him. To see her struggling like that, it ached his heart.

"Jazmine Harrison." He whispered, holding her face in his hands, trying to shush her. "You are injured. I must take you to the hospital. Forgive me... I can’t do what you are asking for. I’ll send someone to get her as soon as possible."

"Sebastian Crowne. Promise me you won’t let anything happen to her. If you don’t, I’ll never talk to you again." Jazmine Harrison had vehemently asked, firmly holding his hands. "Promise me."

"I promise."

It was just these words that had kept her holding on. After hearing his promise, she fell unconscious gradually. No matter how much he had called her, she wouldn’t respond. "I promise, Jazmine Harrison. Please wake up now."

But she didn’t. He hadn’t let go of her hand until doctors told him she was safe.

But he couldn’t keep his promise. After getting Jazmine Harrison to the hospital, when his men had arrived back for Sarah Blackwood, it had been too late. Though Sarah Blackwood’s injuries were not severe, for a pianist who required acute precision such injury was lethal.

Later Sebastian Crowne had investigated the cause of the explosion and it had everything to do with Dorian Blackwood. Sebastian Crowne had been furious. He was ready to destroy everything and everyone in sight. But he was stopped by her. By her last words before she had fallen unconscious again. Because the doctors had told him that while her life was out of danger, she might never wake up again.

They had told him that even if she woke up, the possibility of her forgetting everything was high. Sebastian Crowne had spent his days and nights by her side. He refused to leave. He didn’t eat. He didn’t sleep. He didn’t step out of the hospital room. If he had left... he would have killed Dorian Blackwood for sure.

Until one day, her eyes opened. Her consciousness gradually returned. The day she had woken up, she was just like a lifeless doll. Doctors told them that her consciousness might take days to recover.

When he had walked in front of her, what he had seen in her eyes pierced his heart. She had failed to recognize him. The way she had looked at him was akin to the way she was looking at all the other people in the room. There was not a hint of recognition in her eyes. It was as if all those memories, all those cherished memories, they had created together vanished into thin air.

It was as if all of it was a lie. All their past time, all those feelings, all those promises that they had made to each other—all never happened in the first place. He was just another stranger in her eyes. Only Sebastian Crowne knew how he had endured it.

As time passed, she began to recover her consciousness. But she had never called for him. Sebastian Crowne had been too scared to come in front of her. He used to observe her from a distance, fearing to appear in front of her eyes.

"At least, you are still alive." Sebastian Crowne had said standing outside the hospital room, looking at her lying down on the white sheets. Thick bandages covered her forehead. He had held onto these thoughts. Maybe one day she would recognize him and they would be together once again. That hope alone kept him from breaking apart. "Maybe I would be able to have you fall for me once again."

But fate was cruel. What she had said the next moment brutally ripped him of even that small hope.
