Chapter 1427: Chapter 1399: Death of an Old Friend (Part 5)

Zoel Cohen could hardly believe his eyes, the sink was a “battlefield” of greenery, looking as shocking as a crime scene.

“Washing this way is cleaner,” Kiara explained, feeling guilty.

“Cleaner?! You’ve thrown away all the edible parts into the trash can, and for what are you trying so hard with these inedible leaves? Oh my God, there are actually women like this.”

Zoel had his eyes opened and cast a sympathetic glance at the Youngest Brother of Yuno Family.

“It’s truly hard for you to have survived until now!”

To think that Emma Clark hadn’t been poisoned to death!

Mario Yuno remained silent on this topic, not wanting to offend anyone–hadn’t they seen that he was the one who cooked at home?

Dinner was a pleasant affair with hosts and guests enjoying themselves, men discussing current political events, women talking about child-rearing issues, and not parting ways until almost 10 p.m.

After seeing the guests out, Emma checked the time and sensed it was about right. She was ready to check if Yuzo Joel had ended his social engagements and returned home.

Since learning of his illness, Emma had not only made a dietary plan for him but had also strictly regulated his daily routine, insisting that he would come home by 10 p.m. regardless of the size of the event, and rest no later than 11 p.m.

She dialed his number, which connected quickly, but the background noise suggested he was not indoors.

“Kiara–”

“Old Man, why haven’t you come home yet?!” Emma flared up, knowing from the noise that the Old Man was disregarding her words.

“Kiara, I have something to tell you.”

Yuzo Joel’s voice sounded very serious.

Emma, sensing something was wrong in his tone, was about to ask what happened when he spoke.

“Rico Clark is dead.”

“…What did you say?!”

“Just got the news, Rico Clark is dead, a sudden cerebral infarction. I have just heard the news. Do you want to go see him? I’m outside your home.”

Edward Wheeler entered, having just received the call as well. Seeing Kiara standing motionless with the phone, he understood.

“Did your father call you?”

“Ah… Yes.” Kiara came to her senses and nodded, her expression somewhat vacant.

“Then get dressed, let’s go and see him for the last time.”

Edward nodded to Second Brother who had returned, “Second Brother, I’m sorry to trouble you and your wife to make do for the night at my place. Wendy is entrusted to you; we two may not return home anytime soon.”

It’s better not to bring children to such affairs; fortunately, Second Brother and Isaac were there to help look after the child.

Ever since receiving the call, Kiara’s mind had gone numb. She didn’t feel much grief, and certainly no happiness, just a numbing sensation.

She changed her clothes while Edward called Kiara’s mother. It was best to inform the mother-in-law about such matters. Even though Rico had been at odds with her, death is significant and as a couple once, he was still owed the last rites.

The incident came so suddenly that Kiara’s mother was utterly unprepared. Edward authorized Arlong to take leave, and they drove to pick up Kiara’s mother, while Kiara took Yuzo Joel’s car to leave first.

Throughout the journey, Kiara remained silent until they were almost at the Hospital when she asked Yuzo Joel a question.

“How did he die?”

“When I received the notification, it said he suddenly fainted in the Psychiatric Hospital, and less than ten minutes after being taken there, he was gone. His passing was relatively painless,” Yuzo Joel reassured her, as he noticed Kiara’s complexion wasn’t looking good.

“If you don’t want to see him, you don’t have to go inside. You can have your Mother and Brother take care of the arrangements later.”

Rico Clark had almost killed Kiara before, but he avoided criminal punishment due to mental health issues and was instead subjected to compulsory treatment. Only a few months had passed, and now he was suddenly no more, quite unexpectedly.

“He had cancer to begin with, but I never imagined he would be taken by a heart attack. Life and death are truly unfathomable,” Kiara murmured, her gaze fixed ahead, but her mind was not on Rico.

She didn’t go inside immediately but waited with Yuzo Joel outside. After a while, Mario Yuno arrived by car with Kiara’s mother and Arlong.

The group went inside. The man had just passed, and his hospital gown had not been changed. Arlong personally dressed him in funeral clothes, weeping as he did so.

After all, it was his own father; no matter how many bad things he had done, at this moment, no one was keeping score. When someone dies, all that remains are the memories from their life.

Arlong was heartbroken, and Kiara’s mother was wiping away tears.

Despite a lifetime of resentment and anger at the man who tried to harm her daughter, seeing him just gone like that filled her heart with a sense of desolation. It wasn’t just for the deceased, but thoughts of herself as well.

Unconsciously, life had aged her, and the countdown to the end had begun. It was Rico this time, but no one knows whose turn it will be the next second.

Death always brings an unknown fear to the living.

Mario Yuno glanced at Kiara and thought that having Yuzo Joel with her might be more dependable than being with him. Mario knew Kiara well; at this moment, it was fear rather than sorrow that Kiara felt, fearing that the father standing next to her might be gone soon too. Having Yuzo Joel accompany her was the best solution.

While Arlong and Kiara’s mother were busy dressing Rico and tidying up, Mario took it upon himself to handle the paperwork at the Hospital and deal with the subsequent burial procedure; documents needed to be issued.

When all was done, the Hospital staff inquired whether to contact the Funeral Home. With the weather getting warmer, if the family had no objections, the usual procedure was direct cremation. Mario nodded.

“Call the Funeral Home’s transport over,” he said.

With everyone having seen the body, the next step in the arrangements would be up to Arlong, as he was Rico’s only son.

The Doctor nodded and was about to make the contact when Mario stopped him again.

“There are unresolved cases associated with him, I need to collect some of his blood and hair samples, do I need any paperwork for that?” Mario spoke these words entirely out of instinct at the moment.

“No need for that. If you want, we can extract those right now.” It wasn’t complicated to obtain some blood from a deceased person.

Mario nodded, then after a thought, he added,

“Do it without my wife and others noticing, don’t let anyone else see.”

With Rico gone and his cremation imminent, it would become difficult to extract DNA once the cremation took place. Although Mario hadn’t initially considered it, now at the Hospital, he instinctively added that detail.

Kiara’s identity and Soul Particles were interconnected, and following this theory, Rico should be Kiara’s biological father. Therefore, running DNA tests seemed pointless, which is why, after capturing Rico, Mario hadn’t thought much about it.

However, with the cremation scheduled to happen today, Mario’s professional habits prompted him to take extra precautions. And that precaution would bring significant benefits later on, but that’s a story for another time.
