Chun Xiangnuan felt that this woman was quite bold; decades later, people would no longer be so trusting. It wasn’t that human hearts had become corrupt, but rather that there were just too many swindlers. Yet, she still believed that there were more good people in the world than bad. People in this era were sincere, honest, and upright. She liked this kind of era, even though technology would advance rapidly in the future, it lacked the ease and simplicity of the present.

She supported the woman as they walked toward her own stall. Just then, Qin Xiangyang heard footsteps and hurried out from the inside, only to see his sister supporting a strange woman.

"Brother, come help."

Qin Xiangnuan urgently called for Qin Xiangyang. She was having a hard time holding the woman up; it seemed the woman hadn’t eaten for a long while and had no strength left in her body. The woman was nothing but skin and bones and almost squashed her into a pancake.

"Oh, coming, coming," Qin Xiangyang, without asking why, quickly followed his sister in assisting the woman inside.

Qin Xiangnuan took a bowl and washed it again, scooped a large bowl of preserved egg and lean pork congee, and brought it over, along with a wrapped egg pancake, placing it in front of the woman.

"Auntie, please eat."

"How can I accept this?" the woman said, genuinely embarrassed. Even though she was so hungry her stomach hurt, how could she just accept someone else’s offerings for no reason?

"It’s okay, Auntie. Go ahead and eat. If you don’t eat, the little brother in your belly will be hungry too."

The woman touched her protruding belly, and indeed, if she didn’t eat, the little one inside would also starve.

"Then I won’t hold back, thank you, young girl," she said, reaching out to ruffle Qin Xiangnuan’s hair. How old was this child? So sensible, and much younger than the boys at her home.

She took the spoon and couldn’t help but drink a mouthful of the porridge; it was salty congee, delicious upon hitting her taste buds. She also took a bite of the egg pancake, alternating between bites and the porridge, eating quickly and deliciously until the bowl of porridge was finished, still seemingly wanting more.

"Auntie, would you like some more?" asked Qin Xiangnuan. After watching the woman finish her meal, she wondered how long it had been since the woman last ate to be so famished.

The woman was embarrassed, but she was truly very hungry.

"I’m sorry, could you please give me another bowl? The food on the train isn’t good; if I eat more now, I won’t suffer on the train later."

"Sure," Qin Xiangnuan took the bowl and scooped another large serving of porridge for the woman.

"Thank you," the woman said, taking the bowl. Although she ate quickly, she was very well-mannered. She had the air of an aristocratic lady from ancient times. Some qualities just naturally emerge, and Qin Xiangnuan could see that, despite the simplicity of the pregnant woman’s clothes, the material was of high quality. In their place, only the wealthy people in town could afford such material.

"By the way, Auntie, does your family have any distinguishing features? I’ll have my brother wait there for them, to spare them the worry of not being able to find you," Qin Xiangnuan recalled that she had brought this auntie here, but the family must be extremely anxious if they couldn’t find her.

"Look at me, I forgot all about this," the woman said as she was about to stand up, but she suddenly felt uncomfortable and quickly sat back down, breaking out in a cold sweat; now she didn’t dare to move again.

"Don’t worry, Auntie, I’ll have my brother go wait for them," Qin Xiangnuan said as she poured a glass of water for the woman. After the woman took the glass, she finally let out a sigh of relief, feeling somewhat better, but she still didn’t dare to move, deciding to sit for a while longer before doing so.
