Chapter 312: Chapter 312: Comrades-in-Arms

"I’m not afraid there won’t be enough," Qin Xiangnuan was slicing fish fillets, preparing to make a dish of sauerkraut fish. Altogether, there were about a dozen dishes. She wasn’t worried if it were other people; she could handle five or six guests like Li Li and Mao Xiaomei with ease since they were all girls who wouldn’t eat much. There might even be leftovers. But military school students were different, they were all young men like her big brother, with substantial appetites.

"Enough, enough," Qin Xiangyang hurriedly arranged the dishes, lending a hand to sweep the floor and take out the trash, among other things.

"Just our dormitory, six people."

Six people, Qin Xiangnuan counted. Six wasn’t a small number; the dishes on the table should just barely suffice. Fortunately, she had steamed plenty of rice—enough for each person to have two bowls.

Before long, most of the dishes were ready.

Qin Xiangyang came out and brought out a table. The stone table outside would have been fine, but it was a bit too chilly and wouldn’t have made for an enjoyable dining experience. Inside the living room, the stove was lit, making it warm, and there was a TV to watch too. Eating while watching, no one would feel cold.

Qin Xiangyang then brought out a few bottles of beer. Outside, everyone could be more casual. Drinking some was fine, just don’t get drunk.

He carried two plates to the table, with Qin Xiangnuan following behind him.

"Hey, Xiang Yang, is this our little sister?" The man who was petting the dog immediately stood up and threw an arm over Qin Xiangyang’s shoulder. The term ’our little sister’ sounded particularly affectionate, and the way he said it was very heartwarming.

"This is my sister," Qin Xiangyang moved the man’s hand away.

"Li Dongsheng, take your hand away. You just touched Conghua’s paws."

"Right," he pulled Qin Xiangnuan to stand in front of him. "My sister, Qin Xiangnuan, what do you think? We look alike, right?"

The others looked at them both, comparing the brother and sister who actually didn’t resemble each other at all. The brother had the presence of an elder, strong and stout, but the sister looked tender and delicate, as if she were underage and could nearly be squeezed for moisture. Of course, Qin Xiangnuan was indeed underage. Both brother and sister had thick brows and large eyes; the brother looked ruggedly handsome, while the sister appeared as tender as a budding haitang flower, fresh and innocent, with the scholarly vibe of spring sunshine. There’s an adage that golden houses and beautiful people are found in books, and this young lady looked truly elegant and charming. A light touch of makeup suited her well; too much would have been excessive, too little insufficient, but currently, she was just right.

Qin Xiangyang rather disliked the person who had just petted the dog, but he still introduced him to his sister first.

"This is your Brother Li Dongsheng," Li Dongzhang greeted Qin Xiang with a wave and a hearty smile, "Our sister, hello."

"This is Song Xinguo sleeping in the bunk above your brother, and this is Liu Wei, Sun Zhonghong, Wang Hongbing."

Qin Xiangyang introduced the names of his comrades to Qin Jinuan, showcasing the good relationship among them. They lived and ate together in the same dorm, and bringing them home indicated a close bond.

Qin Xiangnuan’s first impression of them was positive—they were not petty people. And their feelings toward Qin Xiangnuan were mutual. Qin Xiangnuan, with a fair and neat appearance and pleasant features, along with her cooking skills, made them regard her as their little sister. Not that they had other intentions, but as Qin Xiangyang’s brothers, they saw his sister as their own, especially since Qin Xiangnuan looked rather young with her round, sparkling eyes and childish smile. Thankfully, it was winter; come summer, nobody would likely say Qin Xiangnuan was still a child.

Qin Xiangnuan served up several dishes: sauerkraut fish, braised pork ribs, mapo tofu, and Jian Zhiqing’s favorite, Sichuan-style pork with garlic sauce. Once the bones were picked clean, they were Conghua’s share.

Conghua seemed to sniff out the aroma and scurried out, only to be scolded by Qin Jinuan and had to retreat back into his kennel with his tail between his legs.

The others could only laugh and cry at the sight—a military dog turned into a complete watchdog, specifically a dachshund watchdog.

The table full of food left everyone with bulging bellies and great satisfaction. Drinking alcohol with the meal made it even more enjoyable, far surpassing the satisfaction of a restaurant meal that cost tens of yuan. Moreover, the dishes prepared by Qin Xiangnuan were at least as good as, if not better than, those from restaurants outside.

It was only in the evening that everyone left. Had it not been for classes, they would have wanted to stay at the Qin Family’s home for a few more days to enjoy delicious meals and play with Conghua. Conghua had excellent genes and was very alert when given bones to gnaw; he remembered everyone’s face and would either roll over or wag his tail at sight, clearly displaying traits of an Alaskan Malamute.

"What, everyone’s gone?" Jian Zhiqing, who had purposely taken the two younger ones back to avoid disturbance and hadn’t come over himself, asked. He hadn’t had a good meal all day.

"Yeah, they just left," said Qin Xiangnuan, who had just begun to relax and was about to read a martial arts novel when Jian Zhiqing returned.

Jian Zhiqing sat on the sofa and added some coal to the stove. The room, warmed by the stove, was quite cozy, and one could comfortably stay without an overcoat.

Qin Jinuan tossed her book onto the table and joined him.

"Brother Jian, are you hungry? There are still some dishes left," she said.

"Oh? You’re giving Brother Jian your leftovers?" said Jian Zhiqing with raised eyebrows. "Sure, I don’t mind."

"Wait a moment," Qin Xiangnuan hurried into the kitchen. Knowing that Jian Zhiqing liked Sichuan-style pork with garlic sauce, she had specifically set some aside. For each of the other dishes, she had also portioned out a part ahead of time. Though she said it was leftovers, how could it be? It was specially saved for Jian Zhiqing. Besides, with six grown men, everything had been devoured to the last bit; they were just short of licking the plates clean.

While the amount was not great, it was enough for Jian Zhiqing to have a meal.

Jian Zhiqing’s work could certainly be frighteningly busy; sometimes he couldn’t get lunch, relying on a large dinner. Although it’s not ideal to eat heavily at night, Jian Zhiqing was quite health-conscious. After dining, he took Conghua out for long walks, which kept him from gaining weight despite the big evening meals, and he maintained his tall and lean figure.
