Rebirth in 1980: The Farm Wife Makes a Comeback -
Chapter 280: Indecisive
Chapter 280: Chapter 280: Indecisive
Time has passed, and the year is coming to an end. In the past, everyone was eager for the New Year’s celebrations, but nowadays life has improved. The village now has running water and electricity rarely goes out, so year after year, life seems to get better. At the very least, every household can afford to eat refined flour without having to mix it with coarse rice every day.
Qin Guohua’s family hasn’t come to look for them. In fact, Qin Xiangnuan had thought about what to do if they showed up. But even after the New Year’s celebrations had passed, there was no reaction from them. Perhaps it was because the two families had grown further apart; they barely nodded greetings when they met. Moreover, she and her elder brother were both in the Capital City, not staying in Shenjia Village, so no one knew their current situation and thought they hadn’t returned.
Moreover, ever since Hu Li tried to sell Qin Xiangnuan to Wang Dali, she had been in complete discord with Granny Lu. If Hu Li dared to come over, Granny Lu would surely chase them out with a broomstick. During the festive season, Hu Li wouldn’t want to disgrace herself by clashing with a broomstick. It’s fine to lose face at her own home, but if it happened in Shenjia Village, the Village Chief of Dadao Village would not let them off the hook.
On the fifth day of the New Year, Aunt Hua came over. Judging by the time, it seemed like something was happening at the bus station, so Qin Xiangnuan had a vague idea of why Aunt Hua had come.
"Nuannuan, what should we do? They are going to demolish the bus station."
Aunt Hua took the opportunity to come over and poured out all her grievances to Qin Xiangnuan. Her family had been in business for over a decade, relying on the pie shop to establish themselves. But now, with the bus station undergoing construction, she worried about how they would manage in the future. Even though the family had some savings, it wasn’t reasonable for such a large family to just go back to farming.
"Don’t worry, Auntie," Qin Xiangnuan comforted Aunt Hua An, "the bus station will be rebuilt eventually. You could buy another shop and continue selling there. Even if the bus station is under construction, it doesn’t matter. My brother and I used to carry pies and sell them right there."
As long as there are people, there will be no fear of unsold goods.
Aunt Hua thought about it and finally sighed in relief. Why hadn’t she thought of this before? Right, she would go and discuss with her family about buying another tricycle. Like the street vendors outside, they could sell goods from a tricycle.
The Wen family had been doing just that, pushing a tricycle around and selling for years. Although they didn’t make as much money as Aunt Hua’s family, it was still not an insignificant amount. At least it was easier than scratching a living from the soil.
"Auntie, aren’t you considering buying a house in the city?" Qin Xiangnuan reminded Aunt Hua. The future begins with owning a house.
"Why bother with that?" Aunt Hua waived the notion, "Our home has three courtyards, how could that not be enough space for everyone?"
"Then, after the bus station shops are rebuilt, buy one. Owning your own shop is always more reassuring," Qin Xiangnuan added. But Aunt Hua’s reaction showed she wasn’t taking the advice to heart.
As expected, Aunt Hua’s expression changed, "I have to discuss this with your Uncle first. The shop will definitely be expensive, tens of thousands of money, right?" Aunt Hua winced at the thought of spending money.
Qin Xiangnuan sighed quietly and said no more.
Aunt Hua was all well and good, but she had one flaw: indecision. When it came to business, she lacked the resolve and courage, which meant her business could only grow so much. Qin Xiangnuan’s suggestions, if followed, could support generations, at the very least letting her descendants live as the wealthy for generations, but it was a pity Aunt Hua wouldn’t listen.
Qin Xiangnuan didn’t know the outcome of Aunt Hua’s discussion with Uncle Hua. Their decision was a fact, and no one, especially an outsider like Qin Xiangnuan, could change it.
After the New Year, Chun Xiangnuan received a phone call. It was from the bus station; indeed, they were making changes and her shop was to be demolished. Qin Xiangnuan never said it was hers, only that she rented it for a rental fee of thirty money a month. This was to avoid Qin Guohua’s family getting any ideas about the shop, and also to spare Aunt Hua’s family from feeling burdened.
Now they’re tearing it down, and the people there asked her what kind of compensation she wanted.
What to ask for?
She curved her lips and asked for a shop in the newly built station: a shop for a shop. Even if it was half the size of her current one, she knew future shops would not be as large, so she could manage to get half a shop. As for the other half, she would buy it herself, creating another fixed asset.
Qin Xiangnuan didn’t yet have an ID card, and it would be another year before she could get one. So, for now, she used Qin Xiangyang’s ID card to sign the contract with the bus station. Once the contract was set, the station began construction.
Sure enough, Aunt Hua’s family started their business with two tricycles, as Qin Xiangnuan had said. As long as there are people, you won’t have to worry about business or money. As for how high Aunt Hua’s family could climb in the future, Qin Xiangnuan wasn’t sure. She only knew she had to start school soon—not that it was particularly early, but her high school started sooner. Thus, she had to head over earlier. She and her brother decided not to ask Granny Lu to send them off, and they went to the bus station together.
Granny Lu’s eyes reddened as the children who had barely stayed home a few days were leaving again.
Granny Hua comforted Granny Lu, "When children grow up, they must have their own world. You should be happy that the two kids are promising. Look around here; whose children have achieved as much? One’s going to a military academy while the other is in high school in the Capital City."
Granny Lu felt a mixture of pride and heartache upon hearing this.
"It’s really because of the two kids... our house lacks an adult presence..." Aunt Hua moved her lips, but ultimately, she never voiced the rest of her thought.
"Ah..." Granny Lu sighed, "I know what you’re trying to say, but people like us are only suited for life in the countryside. Maybe we’d never get used to the city. With such a large yard and so much space at home, living in the cramped places city dwellers have, we really couldn’t bear it."
"Isn’t that so?" Granny Hua imagined it and felt uncomfortable, "Let’s not talk about that, even finding someone to talk to would be impossible."
Houses in the countryside are generally lived in for a lifetime. If one were to change locations, it’s indeed tough to adapt.
Granny Lu sighed again and stopped thinking about it. After all, it wasn’t too far away, just a day’s train ride, and they had a telephone at home. If they missed the kids, they could just give them a call. Both children had been independent since they were young and were surely able to take care of themselves.
