Chapter 199: An Unpleasant Chat
Chapter 199: Chapter 199: An Unpleasant Chat
Mr. Yan spoke in a soft and gentle tone, "This semester, I’ve been invited back to school to teach a course, and this afternoon happens to be the first class, so I came early. There was nowhere to go, and I ended up sitting here to read for a while. Unexpectedly, I ran into Wan."
As soon as Chuchu heard this, her eyes began to sparkle. She had just regretted not being able to hear his pleasant voice often, and if he were teaching at the school, she could go to his class openly and aboveboard.
"I wonder which course Mr. Yan will be teaching?"
Mr. Yan smiled lightly, "At school you shouldn’t call me Mr. Yan; you can call me senior or teacher."
Chuchu readily complied, "Hello, Mr. Yan."
Yan Hui nodded and said, "I’ll be teaching ’World Economy’ to the School of Economics and Management."
World Economy, huh? It’s not related to her major, but it wouldn’t hurt to listen to a lecture occasionally. Yan Hui had just mentioned he had a class this afternoon, and it so happened she didn’t have any classes then.
She didn’t know if she’d be available for the next class. Better today than choosing another day, she thought. She might as well listen in today.
She asked with a smile, "Mr. Yan, which period is your class this afternoon and in which classroom? Is it possible for me to audit?"
Yan Hui responded cheerfully, "No problem." He then told her the time and location of the class.
His voice was really nice to listen to, and his attitude was so pleasant. This is a major group’s big boss, yet he had no airs about him and wasn’t pretentious.
His every move carried an easy and light grace, and a subtle radiance seemed to flow naturally from inside out, always leaving people feeling as though they were basking in a spring breeze.
She hadn’t fully grasped the meaning of the word ’gentleman’ before, but now, having met Yan Hui, she felt that if there were truly gentlemen in the world, Yan Hui would certainly be one of them.
Even his name sounded nice, reminiscent of Confucius’ favored student Yan Hui.
Chuchu was extremely impressed with this Yan Hui, thinking to herself how lucky she was, that a casual stroll after a meal could lead to a meeting with this big boss.
Xiao Bai had gone to great lengths to meet him, and would probably be green with envy if he knew.
Such a good opportunity, Chuchu was naturally not going to waste it.
She flashed Yan Hui a sweet smile before casually walking into the pavilion and comfortably taking a seat across from him, saying:
"Since Mr. Yan has nowhere to go and there’s nearly two hours before class, it must be boring to sit here alone. I might as well keep Mr. Yan company for a chat."
Her statement was confident and unabashed; Yan Hui raised his eyebrows slightly, smiling, "Then I’ll be bothering you, Miss Wan."
Chuchu had called him teacher, so naturally, he couldn’t keep calling her ’junior student’ Wan, as that would be inappropriate.
"No need to be polite with me, Mr. Yan. So many people wish for a chance to meet you and can’t; having a chat with you is a very pleasant thing."
Chuchu didn’t skimp on flattery.
Yan Hui’s eyes narrowed slightly as he waited for her to continue speaking.
Seeing Yan Hui silent, Chuchu felt slightly regretful inside, wondering why he wouldn’t speak a bit more for her to listen. It seemed she needed to lead the conversation herself.
"Mr. Yan, how did you suddenly decide to return to teaching? Your work must be very busy."
Yan Hui spoke slowly, "This is my alma mater, and being able to do something for the school is my honor. In the past few years, the company was at the startup stage, so I didn’t have the time. Now everything is on the right track; I have some free time, so I accepted the school’s invitation."
His words flowed gently, like the sound of the forest and the spring, which almost intoxicated Chuchu. She was so focused on his voice that she hardly took in the specifics of what he said.
How could someone have such a nice voice! Chuchu marveled at the wonders of people once again.
Seeing Wan Chu’er with a smile at the corner of her mouth and a wandering gaze, Yan Hui shook his head with a smile.
"Yesterday, when I saw Wan and Mr. Bai, they seemed to be very close. You must have had a good relationship since childhood, right?"
Wan Chu’er laughed and said, "Not really, I didn’t meet Brother Bai until I was sixteen. Besides occasionally acting silly, he is actually a pretty decent person.
My Second Brother holds Mr. Yan in very high regard, really takes him as a role model in life."
She took the opportunity to speak a few good words for Xiao Bai, to improve his impression in Yan Hui’s eyes, so that Xiao Bai could gain some advantage when doing business with his subordinates.
Upon hearing her words, Yan Hui naturally asked, "Aren’t you two cousins? How come you only met at the age of sixteen?"
"It’s a bit complicated when it comes to that and involves the older generation, so I won’t tell Mr. Yan," Wan Chu’er lightly glossed over it.
Yan Hui’s gaze flickered for a moment and did not pursue the matter further, but rather said wistfully, "Seeing how good you and Mr. Bai are, I really envy you."
For the first time, Wan Chu’er saw a look of sorrow on Yan Hui’s face. Surprised, she felt a stir of emotion and couldn’t help asking, "Doesn’t Mr. Yan have any brothers or sisters?"
After a moment of silence, Yan Hui slowly said, "I am an orphan, I struggled to survive in the orphanage until I was thirteen, when an old man took me out. All of my current achievements are due to that old man."
Wan Chu’er was taken aback by Yan Hui’s words, momentarily at a loss.
She thought the two of them were just making idle conversation, just like the boundless chat between Xiao Bai and Yan Hui yesterday, easy and pleasant.
Who would have known that they would touch upon Yan Hui’s sad past?
How should she react? We aren’t that close after all!
But seeing such a graceful and jade-like person so dispirited, it really was distressing.
Wan Chu’er thought for a moment and then said, "With your current success, that old gentleman must be very proud of you."
Yan Hui gave a bitter smile, his eyes glistening, and said nonchalantly, "Sorry to have made you laugh. Let’s talk about you instead, let’s discuss something pleasant. Tell me about your family, your brothers, and sisters."
That was quite a swift change of topic!
Wan Chu’er blinked and said, "I’m afraid we won’t be able to talk about anything pleasant again. My parents have passed away, I don’t have any siblings, and I’m all alone too."
After saying this, Wan Chu’er felt a bit of a sigh. Why did she always come across people with no relatives recently?
She herself, Old Sir Zhong, and Yan Hui in front of her.
Yan Hui’s gaze slightly shifted, showing a hint of embarrassment as he said, "Sorry."
Wan Chu’er said, "It’s okay."
"At least you have Mr. Bai, your cousin. The Bai Family should be your uncle’s family, right? There’s a saying that an uncle can be even closer than one’s parents; you must have a good relationship with your uncle’s family, right?"
Wan Chu’er felt that today was not a good day for chatting, why only talk about topics that are not very pleasant?
Seeing Yan Hui’s candid expression, she could only say, "Actually, the Bai Family can’t really be considered my uncle’s family. There is some history there that isn’t easy to explain to you. I just get along well with Xiao Bai."
Yan Hui smiled apologetically again and said, "Sorry for touching on your privacy again. I think it’s about time we headed to the classroom."
Wan Chu’er replied with a sense of relief, "Sure." Then she stood up first and left the pavilion.
Watching Wan Chu’er’s straight figure walking ahead, Yan Hui’s eyes were slightly pensive, as if deep in thought.
