Chapter 110: Chapter 107: The Cost of Growth
Li Si cast a deep glance at Tian Yaruo’s back, mist rising in her eyes, forcibly pressed down by her. Li Si, you can’t cry. Big Brother is still beside you; don’t make the people who care about you feel worried or sad!
Leng Mochen’s face looked grim as he helped her onto the bed, letting her lie down properly. He stroked her hair and said, "Don’t think about anything. Just rest well!"
Li Si obediently blinked her eyes: "Brother, I’m fine! I’m just a little hungry, that’s why I’m feeling so weak. You absolutely have to get me something delicious later!"
Leng Mochen affectionately touched her face: "Glutton!"
The gloom in Li Si’s heart was considerably dispelled by this one word, "glutton." She raised her eyebrows and said, "What’s wrong with being a glutton? You’re the brother of a glutton yourself! Doctor Liu just said not to eat overly rich food; it’ll make you fat! Just buy me some ribs—that’ll do. You are what you eat, right?"
"If that’s the case, I should get you some pig brain and pig heart!" Leng Mochen said, shocking her with his bluntness.
Li Si immediately reacted, her eyes widening in anger as she glared at him: "Are you saying I need to eat to improve my brains and my heart?"
Leng Mochen smiled: "You’re smart for realizing that!"
"Annoying! Is this how a big brother should act? I’m already like this, and you still bully me!" Li Si didn’t know why, but after spending so much time with Leng Mochen, she felt like she could act spoiled whenever she wanted. That was something she had never experienced in her two lifetimes!
"Really upset? I was joking! How could you take it seriously? Alright, I’ll have someone go buy it! Sleep well for now! Wait for me!" Leng Mochen carefully pulled the blanket up to her neck. He scraped her nose gently as he spoke.
"Ok! Have them buy something delicious for you too!" Li Si yawned: "Brother, my eyelids are heavy. Maybe I’ll feel better after I take a nap."
"Alright! Sleep now!" Leng Mochen took one last worried look at her closed eyes and carefully shut the door to the ward as he left.
Li Si heard the door close, opened her eyes, and stared at the white wall, letting out a quiet sigh.
Actually, she had secretly visited Yan Kesong yesterday, a 17-year-old young man, so thin and frail due to his illness. Perhaps because of the medication, he had lost all his hair. It’s said he had undergone bone marrow puncture surgery five times already—that procedure was incredibly painful!
If it were her past self, she might have taken water from the river without hesitation and helped him adjust his constitution. But now, after everything that had happened, if there was anyone left in this world she could trust, it was only Leng Mochen.
Human hearts are unpredictable, and vigilance is necessary! That was the source of her sigh. Since when had she started to raise such deep defenses against people?
Perhaps this is the price of growing up. You can’t remain stationary in life; if you want to move forward, you inevitably have to face storms and muddy paths. And after the storm, your state of mind transforms!
As for Tian Yaruo, her feelings were indescribably conflicted. If it weren’t for the nagging concern of having a guilty conscience in the future, she wouldn’t have agreed to the donation so easily.
After thinking for a while, Li Si fell asleep, exhausted, even lightly snoring as she rested.
When Leng Mochen came back into the room, the first thing he heard was her faint snoring. The corners of his mouth curled up involuntarily. He quietly pulled up a chair and sat by her bedside.
Gently, he picked up her exposed hand, feeling its chill, pressed it against his cheek, and gazed affectionately at her sleeping face.
"Silly girl!" he murmured softly, "What am I supposed to do with you?"
Li Si, lost in sleep, was completely unaware of this. Her slightly furrowed brows revealed her worries!
Li Si slept until dusk, waking up when the city lights were shining brightly. She opened her eyes in confusion and noticed the dim light in the room and the dense darkness outside the window.
Scanning the room but not spotting Leng Mochen, she started to panic: "Brother! Where are you?" Her voice trembled with unease.
Hearing her voice, Leng Mochen hurried through the door and came to her bedside: "Silly girl, awake? Hungry?" His words carried a faint whiff of tobacco.
"Brother, you smoked?" Li Si spoke with astonishment, as if discovering something new. After knowing him for so long, she had never once seen him smoke!
Leng Mochen’s eyes flickered: "I had one. Does it smell very strong?"
"Not really! I was just surprised since it’s the first time I’ve seen it." Li Si turned her head away, avoiding the breath that wafted over when he spoke, her face slightly flushed.
Suddenly, a melody popped into her head—Xin Xiaoqi’s *The Scent*. Li Si dazedly wondered, was she losing her grip on reality?
"Feeling better?" Leng Mochen didn’t miss her change in expression and leaned deliberately close to her ear to ask. Watching her ears turn pink with embarrassment, his eyes gleamed with amusement.
Li Si blushed harder, the low and magnetic voice at her ear seeming to strike a chord within her: "Much better! I’m hungry! Brother, I want to eat!"
Seeing her discomfort, Leng Mochen laughed and shook his head, pulling out his phone to call Jiang Feng.
Not long after, Jiang Feng arrived carrying a large delivery box.
He nodded respectfully to Li Si, then like a magician, he unpacked a sumptuous spread of three dishes and one soup on the dining table before leaving the room.
She glanced at the food—it was all her favorites: braised ribs, sautéed liver slices, steamed sea-cucumber egg custard, and bone broth. She couldn’t help but chuckle to herself—was this some sort of "you are what you eat" nourishment logic?
"Still warm!" Li Si ran her fingers lightly over the dish rims, pleasantly surprised to find them still heated.
"Hurry and eat! Didn’t you say you’re hungry?" Leng Mochen helped her sit up.
Li Si quickly piped up, "Brother, let me wash my hands first!" She hurried to freshen up and relieve herself, feeling a bit uncomfortable.
After she came back from the bathroom, Li Si sat down at the table: "Brother, did you eat yet? Join me!"
"I’ve already eaten. You go ahead!" Leng Mochen sat across from her, watching her eat.
Looking uneasy, she said, "Brother, could you not stare at me like that? It’s making me self-conscious about eating!" She didn’t know what was happening to her—she dared not meet his gaze, which seemed to hold some inexplicable pull.
"Excuses!" Leng Mochen lightly flicked her forehead, then stood up and sat over on the sofa.
Li Si exhaled in relief and, realizing how hungry she was, quickly polished off half the dishes and drank some soup. She soon felt like she’d been revitalized!
She pulled out a napkin to wipe her mouth: "Brother, I wonder how that kid’s transplant went?"
Leng Mochen coldly glanced at her, "You’re worrying about others again? Focus on yourself first!"
Li Si knew he was upset by her overly selfless tendencies. She walked over to the sofa and sat beside him: "Brother, I know you’re just looking out for me! Seeing I’m fine now, aren’t you relieved?"
She remembered his panicked expression when she’d said her lips were numb—it was etched in her memory and heart. This was someone who truly cared about her!
Leng Mochen reached out and lightly pushed her head away as she leaned closer: "You! One word describes you—silly!" (To be continued.
