Rebirth as The Vampire Lord's Wife
Chapter 38: Love Her Eternally

Chapter 38: Love Her Eternally

"Iris, may I ask you something?" Xavier asks, his gaze briefly flicking toward her.

"Hmm, sure..." Iris replied, surprised by his proactive attitude to start a conversation. "What’s that?" she asked, her curiosity showing in her gaze.

"Why do you want to buy a gun?" Xavier asks, then refocuses his attention on the road ahead. Before that, however, he managed to catch her shocked expression.

’How could he know?’ Iris thought to herself, feeling utterly bewildered by his question. No one knows her intention of buying a gun except perhaps the bartender and the bandit who had attacked her.

She narrowed her eyes, looking at the calm Xavier beside her. Then memories of last night’s accident flooded her mind once more, and the enigma surrounding Xavier’s involvement deepened.

The lingering mystery of his sudden appearance to help her and his knowledge of her activities was now consuming her thoughts.

Unable to suppress her curiosity, she voiced her question, "Xavier, how did you know?"

Iris realized she couldn’t keep it from him any longer. This man seemed to possess significant insight into her actions from the previous night.

Xavier chuckled upon hearing her irritated tone. Without shifting his gaze, he replied, "Did you forget that I deleted the CCTV footage? Well, I found out after reviewing the footage." It was a lie, of course. The truth he had learned about it through the thoughts of the red-haired man.

He still couldn’t understand how this girl had come to possess knowledge of X Bar’s dark secrets. She had even dared to confront them, a move that had ultimately pushed the X Bar to consider eliminating her to safeguard their underground business. Her bravery was undeniable, but her recklessness was equally concerning — this made him even more curious about her.

Iris felt her face flush with embarrassment. She turned her gaze away slowly, ashamed of her impulsive actions. It was a significant oversight on her part, a flaw in her strategy as an assassin.

’Damn it, Iris Gray! Please don’t tarnish your reputation. It’s bad enough that your body is weak, but your mind shouldn’t be,’ she scolded herself inwardly.

She couldn’t shake the feeling that her thoughts and actions had become somewhat dulled since rebirth in young Iris’ body. This was a dangerous path, one that could potentially expose her true identity.

Luckily, only Xavier knows; what if her opponents find out?

Iris turned to look at Xavier again, a thought striking her memory.

"Xavier, I believe I need to eliminate all of those guys I confronted last night. They witnessed our act; there’s a chance they might report it to their superiors, don’t you think?" she inquired.

"Don’t worry, I’ve taken care of them," Xavier replied calmly. "But now, back to my question—why do you need a gun?"

Iris felt a sense of relief hearing that, yet Xavier’s persistent inquiry continued to weigh heavily on her mind. Knowing she couldn’t avoid it forever, she braced herself to respond satisfactorily.

"I need a gun for self-defense," she stated casually.

"Self-defense..." Xavier echoed her words. "From whom?"

Iris hesitated, feeling the weight of his scrutiny. ’Why does this man sound so insistent on knowing every detail?’ she scolded silently, taking another deep breath to steady herself.

She didn’t rush to answer him, instead shifting her gaze to the familiar expanse of the empty street ahead, a street she now recognized as they approached her home.

Iris was relieved there was no need to discuss this matter any further. She only needed to explain a bit, "You remember the accident I had, right?"

"Yeah, so?"

"That time, I was attacked by a beast, and I found myself unable to defend against it," she let out an audible sigh, intending for him to understand the depth of her fear from that incident. "...I don’t want to be in such a vulnerable position again. I aimed to buy a small gun, a measure of self-defense against the wild animals in the forest."

Xavier, "..."

"We’ve arrived. Let’s go!" She announced, promptly exiting the car. She left behind Xavier, who shook his head slowly in response to what he considered a rather implausible reason.

He was well aware that there were no wild beasts in this area. They have killed them or transferred them to his property, where the animals’ blood was harvested for their consumption.

Xavier exited the car and trailed behind Iris into the still-closed Gray Cafe. Inside, a male staff member was tidying up the area. Xavier paid no heed to the curious glance he received from the staff as he followed Iris to the rear section of the building—this was the first time he had entered her house through the entrance.

His stride halted when Iris stopped before him.

"Xavier," Iris whispered, "I apologize if my grandmother’s reaction seemed excessive. Just treat her as you usually did to me. Everything will be fine."

"Hmm, I understand," Xavier continued following Iris into the not-too-big yet welcoming living room connected with the beautiful modern kitchen. He saw Grandma Gray busy in the kitchen. He halted his step, awaiting Iris to call her grandma.

"Oh, you guys arrived," Cassandra washed her hands and approached Xavier and Iris, her smile radiant looking at her granddaughter seemingly finding happiness with the man at her side.

"Good morning, Ms. Gray," Xavier greeted her politely.

"Good morning to you, young man. You can call me Granny Gray from now on," Cassandra said, giving Xavier’s shoulder a gentle pat. Then she continues her words in a serious tone, "Xavier, I’m entrusting my granddaughter to you. Please take care of her, and never make her sad again."

Iris was momentarily speechless by her grandma’s words. She was about to interject with a lighthearted remark. However, she halted when she felt Xavier’s hand gently taking hers, drawing her closer to him. Her heart quickened as her gaze met his composed and handsome face.

"Grandma Gray," Xavier’s tone was steady as he addressed Cassandra, "I promise to care and love your granddaughter eternally."
