Chapter 29: Sudden Appearance!

Chapter 29: Sudden Appearance!

Confused, Iris looked around, trying to see what was going on.

When her eyes saw the large broken tree in front of them and the red-haired man’s lifeless body on the ground, it shocked her.

However, she still couldn’t say anything and continued following Xavier. After leaving the small, dark path, they walked on the main road. She felt relieved but also alert, afraid that the men would return to avenge their friend’s death and chase her and Xavier with reinforcement. She wouldn’t be this alerted if Gavriel was the one who had shown up, not Xavier.

With curiosity, Iris glanced at Xavier, who was walking a few steps ahead of her. She asked him, "X-Xavier, what happened there?" Her voice sounded shaky and barely audible, but Xavier could hear her clearly. He slowed his pace so he could walk alongside her.

"Can you explain to me? I’m so confused now," she continued to ask after not hearing any words from him.

He glanced at her, and when their eyes met, he quickly shifted his gaze forward again. "I don’t know," he finally uttered words without looking at her.

Iris frowned. "I mean, why did you suddenly appear in that place?" She was so confused by his sudden presence. She clearly remembered she didn’t see anyone besides the gangster following her.

"And, I remember that guy shot me... But why didn’t the bullet hit me?" she continued, puzzled by the second.

"Maybe he wasn’t good at shooting. That’s why he missed!" He said with a nonchalant expression, yet his voice was as cold as ice.

Iris fell silent at his answer, still puzzled. How could the red-haired man miss when they were only 4 or 3 meters away!? She sighed deeply, knowing Xavier must be lying; he just didn’t want to share the truth with her. Desperate and helpless, she gathered the courage to ask him again, "How did you find me there?"

Xavier looked at her, his expression unreadable. "I was walking and accidentally saw you. Why do you ask?" he responded.

"Y-You..." Her mouth opened, but the words stopped on the tip of her tongue after witnessing his cold gaze. She turned her gaze away, tired of trying to get answers from him.

Now, Iris felt sorry for young Iris, who had chased Xavier so persistently, which led her to die in the forest.

Heaven! If only this man’s aura didn’t have such an oddly depressing vibe, she would probably use violence to make him talk.

"Iris, you should stop asking me," Xavier suddenly said while looking at Iris’s arm. "How are you going to explain that to your grandma?"

Iris was confused by his words. She looked at him and asked, "Explain what?"

Xavier didn’t say a word but stopped in his tracks, turning his body towards Iris. "Your wound!" he said sternly.

"WHAT? A wound? What wound?" Iris frantically said while looking at her arm.

When she saw her arm, suddenly her body froze. Her smooth, white arm was now exposed with a deep knife slash, and fresh blood flowed from it, making her coat feel wet.

"H-How did I get hurt? When and who?" Iris muttered, feeling weird because she couldn’t feel any pain and didn’t remember anyone injuring her.

Xavier was amused to see Iris’s panicked expression. "Get in! We will go to heal your wound!" he said while opening the car door behind him.

Iris didn’t say anything. She got into the car. Swiftly, she took off her long coat and tore off her clothes. Skillfully, she tightly bandaged the wound to stop the still-flowing blood.

Xavier, sitting behind the wheel, was surprised to see her. She didn’t panic like before but calmly handled her wound. He felt impressed!

"I’ll take you to the hospital..." he said.

"No. Please, I can’t go there," Iris said, looking into Xavier’s eyes. She still felt the usual pressure from him. "Xavier, please just take me to the nearest pharmacy. I can take care of the wound by myself."

"Iris, did you forget?" Xavier turned his gaze forward and started the car engine. He pressed the gas pedal deeper, and the car left the place at top speed.

"Forget about what?"

"It’s already 10 PM, and no shops are open in this town, including pharmacies."

"Ah, you’re right." She hit her forehead.

How could she forget that? Only a few businesses are still open, such as hospitals, hotels, and bars. But, other than that, they’ve been closed since nine. She could be breaking and entering the pharmacy by force, but not with Xavier knowing about it.

Iris gritted her teeth silently before saying, "Then please take me home. I can take care of the wound with the standard first aid kit." She had no other choice; she could only go home now.

She prayed that her grandmother would be asleep by the time she returned. However, before long, she realized something, she didn’t bring her house key.

Iris never brings a spare key because she never once comes home late. With a palm on her face, she couldn’t believe she had to break and enter her own house.

’But what about Grandma? What if I wake her up?’ Iris cursed inwardly for making this terrible decision to visit Whispering Alley today.

She glances at Xavier. A few times, she opened her mouth but hesitated to speak.

"Do you want to say something?" Suddenly, Xavier’s voice broke the silence.

"I..."

"OK, I understand!" Xavier said without turning to her.

’Understand, what?’ What is he referring to?’ She hasn’t even said anything yet.

Just before she wanted to ask him, something hit her mind. Instantly, she feels goosebumps. ’Heaven! Can this man read my mind?’ Her mind is now filled with thoughts of Gavriel, the man who claimed to be a God Helper, and Old White, who sent her back alive to take over this body.

Too afraid to speak at this moment, she slowly averts her gaze outside the window and closes her eyes. She tries to calm her mind while attempting to find the proper excuse to give to her grandma.

...

Not long after, Iris felt the car stop. When she opened her eyes, she was surprised to see a three-story building in front of her. This wasn’t her house, but it was the house she had always wanted to go to. However, she had never made it inside before because Justin could only bring her to the front yard — Xavier never let her into their house.

Iris felt a mix of confusion and excitement at the same time. She looked at him, "Wait! Why did you bring me here?" she asked, puzzled.
