Chapter 274: Her Decision (2)

Chapter 274: Her Decision (2)

Iris suddenly appeared between Xavier and Xyronos, leaving them completely shocked. Despite their surprise, they continued attacking each other mentally and through their auras.

She glared at Xavier before slowly shifting her gaze to Xyronos. Even as she noticed his gasp of surprise, she couldn’t ignore the intense, killing intent emanating from him.

"Listen, if you two are going to kill each other, don’t make me witness it!" Iris said icily, restraining the pressure of their conflicting energies.

The icy aura from Xavier on her right and the burning aura from Xyronos on her left made her keenly aware of the vast strength gap between herself and these two men.

"Come on, guys! You both know I’m no match for either of you," she said, eyeing Xavier. "If you keep this up, you might end up killing me in just a few more minutes—"

Her words trailed off as she saw them instantly stop their clash of auras.

The icy coldness covering half of her body and hellfire burning the other half made her worry that she was injured internally. She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath while attempting to heal herself.

"I-Iris, are you okay?" Xavier’s voice sounded beside him. Opening her eyes, she met his concerned gaze.

"Hmm," she replied calmly, though inwardly, her heart raced, feeling flutter meeting his eyes this close. After steadying herself, she asked, "Did you finish talking to him?"

"I did." His eyes flickered with intense emotion.

"Could you wait for me with Lucian? I need to speak with him," Iris requested. When he saw his reluctance, she smiled before continuing her words, "I promise I’ll return with you. But I must talk to him first."

’Iris, I...’ Xavier attempted to communicate through their mental connection, yet he found himself distracted by Xyrono’s presence, unable to utter his thoughts.

’You still trust me, right?’

’Definitely!’

’Alright. Wait for me with Lucian.’

Xavier nodded, redirecting his attention to Xyronos. ’You can’t break your promise!!’ he warned him before he vanished.

...

After a few moments, Iris and Xyronos simply stared at each other, an unspoken tension lingering in the air.

Xyronos remained motionless, leaning against the wall, his gaze fixed on her.

Just like Xyronos, Iris only stood where she was, a few steps away from him.

As Iris met his eyes, she struggled to find the right words to begin. She felt that Xyronos already knew her decision, and he purposely didn’t ask her, waiting until she said it directly.

This is what makes it difficult for her to speak. Because she knew expressing the sincere feelings in her heart would probably destroy his feelings, hurting him once more.

Hurting his heart two times, something she didn’t want to do. However, she also couldn’t avoid that right now; she wasn’t the Iris who lived in the past, in the middle realm, but she is now Iris Gray, a woman born in this lower realm.

After a few moments, Iris was the first to break the silence.

"Xy, let’s sit and talk." She walks to the seating area and settles on the single sofa.

Xyronos didn’t respond verbally, but he sat across from her.

"You already know what I’m thinking, right?" Iris asked, worry rising in her heart when she saw Xyronos’ eyes looking at her differently.

Usually, those eyes held gentleness and calmness, but now? She could see them slowly turning severe and sharp.

Iris knew he was angry. She clenched her hands in her lap, waiting for him to say something.

After a prolonged silence, Xyronos finally spoke. "Did you ever love me, Iris?"

"I did," she answered without hesitation. "But it was in the past, Xy—back when I was in the middle realm, the person you knew before. I’m Iris Gray now, a woman born on this earth; I’m entirely different from her, sharing only the same memories."

Xyronos’ hands clenched into fists at his words. If this woman were not the woman he truly loved, he would have killed her for toying with him like this. He held back his emotions even when his heart was shattered.

"I’m sorry if I’ve given you hope these past few days, Xy..." Iris continued. "But I’m trying to open my heart to you. Am I really falling in love with you AGAIN in this current life?"

Xyronos felt confused hearing her words but remained silent, allowing her to finish her words.

"However, after a few days of trying... the answer remains unchanged. My heart doesn’t feel the same as when we lived in the middle realm." She paused, taking a deep sigh.

"I’m a different person now, Xy. I’m genuinely sorry if my words and decision hurt you." Iris finished her words while lowering her gaze. She can’t bear to meet his gaze.

Expressing what had troubled her recently brought Iris a sense of relief. It felt as if a heavy weight pressing on her chest had lifted.

There were no more burdens because she had been honest with this man and with herself. She pushed herself to speak the truth because she didn’t want to raise false hope in him. She didn’t want to cause him any more pain.

Xyronos found himself speechless as if all the sentences he’d formed in his mind had suddenly deserted him.

Even though there was pain and heartbreak in his heart, Xyronos did not harbor any anger towards her. He admitted that what she said was the truth.

The woman before him wasn’t the same as Iris from the middle realm, his other half. She was an entirely different person, albeit sharing the same memories as his beloved. He couldn’t compel her to love him.

Xyronos gazed at her for a moment, interrupting her when he saw she was about to speak.

"Lady Iris Gray, I understand," Xyronos said, mustering a faint smile that didn’t reach his eyes. "You can go now; don’t keep my brother waiting for long." He rose from his seat.

Without waiting for Iris to respond, he vanished from the room.
