Chapter 231: God’s Punishment

Chapter 231: God’s Punishment

Before long, another curiosity struck Iris. She gently touched his face to make him look into her eyes. "And what about you? What brings you here, Xavier?"

Silence hung in the air as Xavier heard her question. His hand subtly clenched as memories traced back to find the answer.

"Why am I here?" It was a question he had asked God countless times. However, the answer given by God seemed unreasonable. He had resisted a few times, but how could he defy Him?

Xavier felt compelled to follow God’s orders, initially thinking it would only be for a few years. Yet, despite millennia passing, he remained here.

Several times, he had asked God, "How long?" His response was frustratingly ambiguous, "Your heart will tell!"

What kind of answer was that? After so many years, Xavier had never discovered the true answer to the question he had asked—until today.

...

Xavier tried to smile at her even though the smile didn’t reach his eyes. "Why am I here?" he repeated Iris’ sentence.

Iris nods in a hurry.

"Yes... Yes... please tell me..." She feels frustrated whenever she asks Gavriel or the others; they never tell her anything, as if everything about Xavier is taboo. Their secretive attitude is enough to make her even more curious to know.

He silently sighed deeply before saying, "Iris, do you believe if I told you that God punished me?" When he saw her eyes widen in shock, he said, "Well, yeah, that’s why I’m here. To carry my punishment..."

Iris was taken aback by Xavier’s sudden sadness. This marked the first instance she witnessed such a melancholic expression on his face.

"Xavier, why does God punish you?" she asked, her curiosity ignited at the thought of someone as kind and decent as Xavier being exiled to this lower realm. Justin had previously mentioned that Xavier had been in this realm for more than a millennium, so his punishment took so long.

"Because I destroy a race in the middle realm," he faintly smiled, reminiscing about that time.

Iris was shocked. She gazed at him, her emotions a blend of curiosity and concern.

Countless questions flooded her mind. How could he erase an entire race? What had provoked him? Why did he exterminate them all? Why innocent lives?

Try as she might, Iris struggled to understand his reasoning, feeling an inexplicable tightening in her heart.

.

"Why did you do that? I mean... were you provoked by that race, leading to their eradication?" Unable to suppress her curiosity, she asked.

However, Xavier didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he gazed at the ceiling above, which worried her.

Iris refrained from further inquiry, sensing that his reason might be a secret he wasn’t ready to share with her. A faint half-smile graced his lips.

Moving closer, Iris placed her hand on his chest, closing her eyes. "Alright, it’s getting late. I need to sleep now... Good night, Xavier," She yawned, attempting to sleep.

Xavier glanced at her with a smile, turning toward her and enveloping her in his arms to ensure her comfort.

After some time, he responded, "—This has puzzled me about my past and why God sent me here."

She slowly opened her eyelashes and heard his voice above her. She nestled into his arms, listening intently without interrupting.

"God tasked me to punish them all, yet He sent me here after I succeeded," he sighed deeply, frustrated.

"Why did He do that? You were only following an order..." Iris was left speechless—and a growing worry about her own situation surfaced.

As God’s Helper, she carried out divine orders, including executing sinners. But what if, one day, God turned against her? Would she also face punishment, just like Xavier? Perhaps God exiled her to another lower realm in this vast universe?

The mere thought made her shiver, consumed by fear of an uncertain future.

...

"If only I knew His reason, I’d tell you..." Xavier chuckled while drawing her close to his chest, seeking comfort in her warmth and the rhythm of her heartbeat. Only hearing the soothing sound of her heartbeat could slowly ease his anger.

Suddenly, the room fell into a hush as they both drifted into their thoughts. It grew so quiet that the distant calls of night beasts became audible.

However, another question soon danced in her mind. She looked up, meeting his still-bright eyes. "Xavier, what race did you exterminate?" she asked.

"The Demon race," Xavier faintly answered. "I wiped them out in the middle realm." He answers her calmly, but Iris feels shocked.

Instantly, Iris’ face paled upon hearing about the race he had destroyed. "You... killed them all?"

The revelation surprised her; she had not expected Xavier’s involvement in the extermination of the Demon race. While researching the Demon King to obtain his blood, she discovered that the Demon creatures were an evil and powerful race.

"As far as I recall, yes. I eradicated the race to the last being—nothing left," he paused, annoyed as he remembered that the individual he believed had already slain now appeared in this lower realm.

"But I was mistaken. The race didn’t entirely disappear; a few have managed to flee to this lower realm..." He continued. There was a hint of annoyance in his tone.

...

Recalling the Demons she encountered in recent months flooded Iris’s mind. When the Demon who killed her and tortured Eric appeared in her mind, her face turned ashen as she realized something.

"X-Xavier..." She pulled away slightly, needing to see his face. "Do I... have ties to the middle realm?" Her voice trembled with anticipation, awaiting his response.

The idea had crossed Iris’s mind before, but she always dismissed it—there seemed no way she could have come from the middle realm, right?

Surely, Xavier and the others would recognize her if she had. Yet, Xavier had no memories of her before she transmigrated into this young Iris body.

She also remembered that Xavier had told her he liked her because of her unique personality, not because of her similarities to other women — that’s why she was sure she wasn’t from there.

However...

Amidst the peculiar events around her, the possibility began to feel real.
