Chapter 188: Met Eric Hester

Chapter 188: Met Eric Hester

Xavier was hesitant to bring her here so soon, foreseeing that this girl might be frightened or shocked upon seeing Eric’s condition. Yet, he couldn’t refuse her.

He paused before the massive wooden door. He glances at her and takes her hand before opening the door. When their hands entangled, he was surprised to feel how cold her hand was. This was the first time he felt her body temperature akin to his own.

"Iris, are you ready?"

"Hmm, I’m ready," she answered, although her nervousness was evident when she saw Xavier’s concerned look, but she tried to hold it back.

As the bedroom door opened, Iris’s heart raced faster. She clung tightly to Xavier’s hand, too anxious to see Eric. Her gaze fixed on the figure lying on the bed covered by the blanket.

Slowly, she entered the room with Xavier beside her. She briefly gazes at the slender older woman with short white hair, making way for her to approach the bed. She knew that woman was the witch who helped Eric to heal.

However, Iris didn’t pay attention to the woman. At that time, her mind focused on the figure lying on the bed; his face was all she could see.

Instantly, her body froze.

When her gaze fell upon his face, she suddenly felt like all her muscles had betrayed her. She couldn’t move. She couldn’t even stand straight. If Xavier hadn’t held her hand, she might have collapsed onto the hard marble floor due to the shock of what she saw.

Her mind went blank like an invisible black hole had devoured her thoughts. She was at a loss for words and didn’t know what to say.

’How could Xavier claim that the man on the bed was Eric?’ Iris was talking to herself. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing. She saw one side of the man’s face was covered in flesh while the other was visible as a skull.

"Xavier, please, please, tell me..." Iris turned her gaze away from the person on the bed towards Xavier. "Please tell me this isn’t Eric," her voice trembled as tears streamed down her face, and she began to sob.

"I’m sorry, Iris... but this man is Eric," Xavier couldn’t bear to see her cry. He pulled her into his embrace and held her tightly, feeling her body shake as she cried.

Iris couldn’t bring herself to look at Eric’s face, which resembled a living corpse.

It was incredibly difficult for her to accept that the man on the bed was Eric Hester, the man she regarded as her father, her only family. No features remained to make her believe it was Eric, and she couldn’t see his eyes since the man on the bed was asleep. But because Xavier had said it, she forced herself to believe it.

After her emotions calmed somewhat, she asked, "Xavier, how can he still be alive in this condition?" her voice trembling amidst her sobs.

"His heart is still beating. His blood flows through his veins, and all his internal organs function. He looks like a living corpse because he lost fifty percent of his flesh. That’s why I told you... you can’t see him as you did before. He’s different."

Hearing his explanation drained the color from her face. She couldn’t fathom how a person could survive while losing fifty percent of their flesh with all their internal organs still functioning.

Countless questions raced through her mind, tormenting her and demanding answers. How could a human still be alive in such a condition? Were they keeping him alive intentionally, or were they merely torturing him? What sin had Eric committed to deserve this treatment? And many more.

Iris felt that God was cruel to Eric. If God intended to punish Eric as a sinner, why didn’t He send her to end Eric’s life? As an assassin of God, she would have willingly taken that mission to end his suffering.

She believes that if Eric were to wake up, he would probably prefer death to living with this condition.

"Xavier, how could they torture him like this? Why? Why did they torture him!?" Iris asked again, but Xavier had no answer for her.

Xavier was also unaware of why the demon was torturing Eric. He attempted to read Eric’s memories but couldn’t find the answer. Even within Eric’s mind, he was clueless about why those demons were tormenting him.

However, it puzzled Xavier further when he discovered from Eric’s mind that those demons were inquiring about Lady Iris.

’Lady Iris!? Why are those demons referring to her by that name?’ This question had been bothering him.

Xavier sighed silently before responding to her query, "I apologize, Iris, I can’t provide you with the answer you seek," he said gently, kissing the top of her head.

Iris’s shoulders slumped slightly. The fact that even Xavier couldn’t answer her question left her somewhat disappointed.

Sensing Iris’s sadness, Xavier hurriedly continued, "But I will try to find out, even if I have to plead to God. Iris, please grant me more time to do so."

His serious tone warmed Iris’s heart, touched by his promise. She released her embrace and looked up to meet his gaze.

"Xavier, I know you can’t meet God, but if you could... Please ask Him to grant me the chance to take revenge on the person who did this to Eric," Iris’s voice trembled, filled with anger, remembering Eric’s current state.

She continued, "Eric was the one who stood by me when everyone else abandoned me," her vision blurred as tears welled in her eyes. Unable to contain her grief, she cried once more.

Witnessing her distress tore Xavier’s heart. Slowly, he raised his hand and wiped the tears from her cheeks.

"I promise," he assured her. Although he didn’t personally know Eric, he understood how deeply Eric had cared for Iris from her childhood to adulthood. Eric was like a father figure to Iris.

Because of this, he vowed not to let the one responsible for Eric’s condition escape justice.

"Iris—" Suddenly, Xavier’s words faded as he heard the witch doctor’s inner thoughts.
