Rebirth as The Billionaire's Seventh Wife -
Chapter 38: Exposed!
Chapter 38: Exposed!
Speeding toward Pine Hill, Aurora held her breath in silence as their car finally passed the spot where her accident had claimed her life.
She had managed to keep her composure when they drove by, heading to the graveyard.
But now, after seeing her own grave and hearing the outpouring of sadness and guilt from Alex, she felt an unexpected tightness in her chest.
Fortunately, the car was moving quickly; they were already on the main road before she knew it.
At the same time, Aurora’s cell phone vibrated in her bag, the noise breaking the silence. She swiftly pulled it out and noticed "Aunty Tina" on the screen.
Hesitant to answer, she worried about disturbing Alex.
However, his sharp and clear voice echoed in the car, surprising her.
"How long are you going to let that noise continue?"
"I’m sorry," Aurora said, turning to look at him. "Alex, may I pick up this call?"
"Why are you asking for my permission? That’s your phone, not mine!" he shot back without taking his gaze off the road. She was left speechless.
Aurora didn’t want to make Alex angrier, so she quickly answered the call. But she couldn’t get a word in as Tina’s loud voice erupted from the other end—loud enough for Alex to hear.
"Young Miss, thank God you picked up my call. Where are you? Why aren’t you here? I’m so happy here. Even though I arrived only a few hours ago, everyone has been unbelievably kind to me. Hurry home, Young Miss..."
She gripped her cell phone tightly and hurriedly reminded Tina to lower her voice.
"Aunty, I’m on my way there. I’m sorry, Aunty, but would you mind lowering your voice, please?" she whispered, pulling her head away from Alex, hoping he couldn’t hear her.
Instead of lowering her voice, Tina raised it even higher.
"Oh my goodness, Miss, we must talk about your husband! Where are you now?!" Tina spoke as if she were screaming.
Helpless, Aurora sighed deeply before responding, "I’m on my way, Aunty. We will talk later..."
She wanted to stop Tina from speaking further, aware that Alex could hear her voice. Still, Tina kept talking, making Aurora feel even more embarrassed.
"Young Miss, I have good news for you. I’ve gathered information from other staff members in this house. Your husband is not an old man. He isn’t bald or has bad breath like you imagined..."
Before Aurora could speak, Tina’s happy laughter echoed.
"Oh dear Miss Aurora, congratulations, I’m so happy for you because your husband is so freaking handsome..."
Suddenly, the car’s temperature dropped below freezing.
Aurora quickly glanced at Alex. She wished he hadn’t heard that. But her hope shattered when she saw him staring intently at her.
Hastily, Aurora interrupted Tina, "Aunty, we will talk later when I’m..."
But Aurorra was too shocked to remember to end the phone call when she saw him ignoring the street ahead, only looking at her.
’What the hell, Alex! Does he want us to get into a car accident?’
Aurora swiftly signaled for him to focus on the road.
As if he knew what she wanted to say, Alex quickly turned his attention to the street, even though his annoyance still lingered in his expression.
"Please, please be careful, Alex," Aurora said softly. The terrifying thought of a car accident nearly overwhelmed her. "I don’t want to die..." She whispers.
After the car moved steadily again, she tried to calm her heart. However, she couldn’t even steady the hurricane within her; Tina’s voice from the speakerphone startled her.
"Hello, young Miss Aurora, are you there? Why isn’t she speaking? Miss...?"
"I’m here..." Aurora replied weakly. She thought Tina would drop the subject, but she was wrong.
Tina’s words made her wish to disappear from the car instantly. She felt too embarrassed to sit next to Alex, fully aware that he could hear Tina’s voice clearly.
"Young Miss, you can relax now. Your husband must be a young and handsome man. Alright, I know you’re curious now... that’s why you can’t speak, right, young Miss...!?"
Aurora was at a loss for words.
How could she say anything? Tina didn’t even have a chance to respond.
’Gosh! Aunty Tina, can you please stop yapping!?’
"Aunty, I’m not..." Once again, her words faded as Tina interrupted her.
"Miss, I know, I know... You want to see him now, right?" Tina’s giggle echoed from the other end. "Just wait a moment. I’ll try to find his photo and send it to you..."
Aurora couldn’t take it anymore. She hurriedly interrupted Tina.
"Aunty, we will talk later. There is no need to find his picture. I already met him!"
"Oh my... what..." were the last words Aurora heard before she ended the call.
Aurora decided to turn off her cell phone. She didn’t want Tina to call her again.
The atmosphere in the car grew increasingly tense.
The embarrassment of addressing Alex’s flaws while he was present made her cheeks flush again.
She could only pray quietly, hoping Alex wouldn’t overhear all of Tina’s words.
However, God didn’t favor her this time.
"Is that really what you think of me? Old? Fat? Bald...?" Alex’s tone was enough to make Aurora swallow silently.
"It wasn’t me who said that; it was Tina and Aurora Spencer." Aurora wanted to say that, but all the words were stuck in her throat.
Alex continued teasingly when she didn’t respond: "Are you satisfied to know I’m not an old, bald man like your aunt said earlier?"
She gritted her teeth and stared at him, "Alex, it doesn’t matter how you look because this marriage just doesn’t matter to me. It’s fake!"
Suddenly, the car came to a stop.
"Alex, why did you stop here?"
Glancing at the building, she spotted a fast-food restaurant and a mini-mart.
"Did you need to buy something from that store?"
When Aurora didn’t hear his reply, she turned back to him. She was taken aback to see his dark expression and the unsettling glint in his eyes—he was angry.
"You should be careful about what you say, Aurora Spencer! Our marriage is official—legally recognized. Never claim that this marriage is fake."
